What are these heater thingies thou allst speaketh of? I DO remember back in the olden days of heating a bed with a lightbulb in a cage  and also a friend of mine got a real bad burn from the old stone bottles they used to prewarm the bed with. Many of the houses in my village are from the 1700's so most were warm where there was a fireplace or a paraffin stove. But upstairs? Nuthin'. I recall well scraping the ice off the inside of the window to see what the day was looking like when I woke up. Brrrrrr

No, that was the house I grew up in. Only a woodstove in the living room and a kerosene heater in the bathroom if you didn't want ice in the tub with you. I guess I am quite spoiled now...really don't miss those days. Thank you for reminding me how blessed I am! :)

$4.40/gallon!!! Are you serious? I freaked when it went to $3 some 6 years ago. I was spending $600+ a month to heat my home. That's when my neighbor and I got our neighbors together and got the gas company to lay some lines in our neighborhood.
DH just paid over $375 for 100 gal in WV. He uses an electric oil radiator, the electric fireplace and a small space heater to keep warm. Thermostat is set at 62 but I don't think it kicks on very often. The radiator is the only one he leaves running while away.

I'm glad to be total electric at home. With the kids away during the week my bill has gone down a lot. $150 last month, about 2000 sq ft.

I was doing the same thing when I was on propane. Had three of those electric oil radiators.

You wouldn't want to be total electric with Duke Energy. My neighbor speaks of $600 / month electric bills using a Heat Pump in the winter.
He has something else wrong. No way it should cost that much even if the heat strip kicks on a lot in January. Duke Energy is still relatively cheap electricity compared with most electric companies.

I’ll join you all in having some computer issues. Nothing anyone here can help me with. We are switching to online self scheduling at work that I should be able to do from home. It goes live Monday, so they have all managers early access so we can play with it before hand and be a resource. It is a nightmare trying to get into the system from home due to privacy settings by the schedule program and our works VPN. Last night I finally got into it, and now all the windows open, but no information pops up when I click the current schedule tab, the little blue circle just spins away till it eventually times out, then logs me out.

So glad I’m not working Monday bc I am not a resource to anyone.

When computers/internet work, they're great. Getting there is another issue. Most people are interested in what time it is, not how to build the clock. For some reason, many computer geeks think we should know how all that stuff works. Not everyone has the time or inclination to do so...anymore than the geeks have the time or inclination to learn how an automobile works.

If I were the guy rolling this out, exactly THAT would be a resource for me - one thing I need to check on if not already done by Monday :)

And forget about on the iPhone. I can’t figure out how to add java to safari, I honestly don’t think it’s possible. I’m really hoping they delay the launch till next pay period.

I don't think there's a Java VM for the iPhone

:D

Been to our high school reunion yesterday - 20 years. Fun thing that after a couple of drinks to wash away the initial awkwardness we all behaved exactly as we were 20 years ago :)

I’m going to guess that whoever is rolling this out has no clue that an entire hospital is going to freak the heck out when they can’t get in to schedule themselves. It’s an extremely competitive time, there is only 1 computer on each floor that hat it loaded, it opens at 5am... fortunately I have vacation time over the holidays so it’s not imperative that I log in that first day.

And I’m not surprised iPhone and java don’t play together. I didn’t have java on my laptop for a good reason. It’s awful!

Glad you had fun at the reunion!

You are absolutely right. I have a book on user design with a title that gets to the heart of what users of tech need developers to do: “Don’t Make Me Think”. If your users have to struggle, then you haven’t done your job properly.

My first thought too! The developer needs to know it wasn’t working properly.

LOL @ your reunion! Glad you had a good time.

In PA my house had electric baseboard. It wasn’t the best quality construction and therefore not well insulated. Even keeping the setting relatively low, in deep winter my bill could get to $450/mo.

Here in winter, it hovers around $50. I like that better. Nothing could make me want to move to Florida. Too humid.

David, have you changed your dns setting in your router yet? I'm thinking that's the route I would go. Just wondering though if that is sufficient for the iPhone when communicating on the carrier's tower.

Not yet. I did log in to my banks site and it thought I was on a different PC. Just had to verify it was me.
Truth is I haven't figured out if I can yet. it seems Roku goes with Google automatically and from reading I'd have to block Google DNS to stop it.

I've been in my Netgear router and found where I can change it. Not sure how that interfaces with the Roku. I would think the router rules over any device.

I can see where to set my local network for it. Just not sure about setting the connection to the internet. The log shows it using the new DNS about haft the time...
