I went
through that with my mom when she was in the hospital. I was very frustrated. I lost a whole lot of respect for doctors after that episode. She was in for cancer and other maladies and it took the pulmonary doctor to set me straight on her condition. He brought me to another room and had a heart to heart with me (never had a chance to tell him how much I appreciated that). And he was not the primary doctor. All the other doctors were a joke...especially her cancer doc. Could never find them. Anyone who takes the word of a doctor is setting themselves up for disappointment.
Agreed! When my third daughter was in the hospital for aspiration pneumonia, I stayed there with her the whole 2 weeks. She was 3 yrs old. She went through 2 surgeries to drain & clear her lungs. Side note: the first trip to the ER with her, they sent us home with antibiotics, but failed to notice the pneumonia.
With the surgeries, they kept increasing her dosage of antibiotics and stepping up to stronger & stronger ones. She’d get better for a day, then go downhill again. We brought in an infectious disease doctor - had to insist he be allowed to review her case. Still none of them talked to the others. I finally had to insist they confer. That took place in the hallway, where they proceeded to argue!
Reason finally prevailed, the problem was discovered and she recovered. That would not have happened if I had just let them go on with separate and non-communicating approaches. That’s also where nurses are a blessing.
