wellll... finally things are getting back to "normal"
saw a good one at the drive up at the bank... pickup truck jacked up and super wide tire set ( girl driving it) whipped into the bay ( drive up area) to do a transaction at the "outside" setup...
the bays have those 8"tall cement islands that the "teller machines" sit on and the entry point is wider than the actual lane width... needless to say, she wedged the tires tight against those 8" curbs and locked the front wheels ( rims) between the cement... she tried to go into reverse, but all she did was smoke the rear tires... she tried going forward and that didnt work either... as she jumped ( literally) out of the truck she was yelling about how her boyfriend is gonna kill her... Sooo... I get out of my car and survey the carnage... yup the rims were toast... I asked her if there was a lug wrench in the back of the truck... yup there was, told her she needs to loosen but not remove the lugnuts on both front tires and reverse out of the "sticky" situation... she did as instructed and backed out of the jam with minimal ( additional) damage to the rims... altho I did have to tell her to re tighten the lugnuts since she was ready to drive away with them still loose....

You’re a Good Samaritan! Since reading this, I’ve looked up rims and lug nuts trying to picture why this was the solution. Is it because loosening the lugs was enough to release the rims which allowed the front tires to spin?

As you can see, I’d have been as hopeless as this young lady was in knowing how to get out of such a jam. :)

actually, when you loosen the lug nuts it allows the wheels to "cant" ( tilt) ... imagine a spinning plate on a stick... with the "topside" lugnuts loose it allows the "upside" of the rim to move outwards and the lower part of the rim to move inwards a tad... thus giving just enuf relief to unbind the rims from the pinch points... :)

kinda like this... ( ] [ = curb, | = tire ) ]|--------|[< from that... to this> ]\--------/[

ahhh... the magic of physics ;)
