My response to those kinds of things is usually either to ignore them and possibly roll my eyes, or, if they happen to be someone open to learning more, I'll direct them to places for more information after giving them a brief lesson on what is known and what is speculation, misinformation, or just plain scare tactics.

I'm also not someone who claims there's absolutely no way vaping could cause problems. I make a point of telling people (when it comes up) that vaping hasn't existed long enough for there to be long term studies, but a lot of us view it as harm reduction because of the known negative effects of smoking and the improved health a lot of vapers experience after they switch.

Hi Adam! I understand your frustration, I've experienced it, too! Although I want to stop every smoker I see to talk with them about the benefits of vaping, the amazing health changes I've had, I purposely DON'T. I never want to be one of those militant ex-smokers who has to impose my beliefs on smokers, which is why I don't like or understand why the smokers who approach me are SO confrontational. I take a deep breath, listen and then explain why I vape, and share the info I've learned (and continue to learn) about harm reduction as it relates to smoking. I'm afraid these people read only the headlines of anti-vaping articles/propaganda and have no interest in investigating further. I can only tell them my experiences. I've also been approached by people who are interested in vaping as a means to stop the stinkies, and they FAR outnumber the nay-sayers!! My anger isn't toward the people who confront me...very often their opinions aren't based on the information available. My anger is toward the "ruling" bodies that will be making decisions DESPITE the information available, and based on greed. I'm sure there is a certain amount of risk involved in vaping....delivery systems, juices, wicking and coiling material.....we don't know all the variables yet, BUT I am certain that, for me, it"s far safer than analogs.

It wouldn't hurt to direct a bunch of your anger towards the mainstream media as well.
They are the ones that are propagating all of the lies and misinformation.

Absolutely DC2!!! We see it everyday, with virtually every topic! Sensationalism based on little to no substantive proof and no regard as to the effects it has on the public.

Response depends on
a) their attitude, and whether I think they actually might be interested in real information. For instance, if they're a smoker that might want to quit but has been scared off vaping...
b) my mood and patience at the moment.

Basically, I tell them that I know A LOT about the technology, the science, and the products, and would be glad to tell them all about what's safe, what's not, and why the "news" they've seen is mostly fabricated BS planted by people with billions of dollars to lose (tobacco, pharma, and government).

"For example," I'll tell them, "I know EXACTLY what's in my liquid - I MAKE it. There's 1 harmless chemical, 1 beneficial chemical, a few molecules of food flavoring, and a tiny bit of nicotine. Period. And Nicotine, by the way, is roughly comparable to caffeine - as long as you're not BURNING a bunch of crap along with it like a cigarette does. My vapor is healthier than the air downtown. It's healthier than the coffee you're drinking. We should really talk about the crap you eat for lunch."

Or something a bit shorter or a bit longer. Depends.

Is this evidence which proves e-cigarettes are as safe as BREATHING AIR?
Electronic cigarettes pump out vapour which has NO toxic effect on the cells found in human lungs, scientists have claimed.

Fresh research funded by British American Tobacco has suggested inhaling nicotine vapour could be as safe as breathing air.

To perform its experiments, the tobacco giant teamed up with the MatTek Corporation, which makes models of human cells used in 'in vitro' laboratory experiments.

Scientists then used a "smoking robot" to expose these lung cell replicas to tobacco smoke, the vapour from two different brands of e-cig and just plain old air.

When exposed to old-fashioned smoke for six hours, the cells died.
But after subjecting the cells to an "aggressive and continuous" dose of vapour, researchers claimed the damage to the airway tissue was "similar to that of air".

Well, last time it happened, I was at a back yard Labor Day cook out party. It was the usual middle americana type thing, with burgers, brats, beers and families hanging out. Big kids, little kids, everyone was there. We were sitting around after eating and these kids (maybe 4 and 5 years old) come up to me and one says "You look like Santa" and they all laughed. (It's true, since my beard started going gray, I do look like Santa.) I said "I do?" and laughed then said, "Then you should tell me what you want for Christmas" I was just joking but this little one hops up in my lap and tells me what she wants! Then one by one they all 6 of them did that! All the adults were laughing at me saying "You better bring them what they want Santa." The last kid was one of those dirty mean little booger monsters. You know the kind. One of those smelly kids who always looks like he needed a tissue 10 hours ago and now looks like he needs a power wash to blast the snot away. He pulled my beard like 3 times to make sure it was real and it hurt. So after that, I decided to go out to the front porch and have a vape. The booger monster came out front eating an ice cream cone that was melting all over. He said "You shouldn't smoke." I said "I'm not. It's called vaping." Then he reached up with his grubby melted ice cream covered hand and yanks on my beard and says "You shouldn't smoke!" I knocked the ice cream out of his hand and yelled "You just ...... of Santa Clause and made the permanent naughty list ya rat! You aren't getting a Christmas present ever!" He cried and cried but I think I got my point across. Vaping isn't the same as smoking.

My response is generally proportional to whatever my connection to the person is.
If it's a casual friend, or a random encounter, I simply either ignore the comment, or tell them to mind their own business.
If it's a family member, or a close friend, I understand that their comment is likely a combination of honest concern, and ignorance. If this is the case, my response will be more educational.

It has only happened to me once from a total female stranger (maybe I should change that as it doesn't quite sound right!). I was so shocked that a stranger would feel the need to offer free medical advice that I couldn't even respond.

As far as questionable long-term effects from vaping, if it takes 20 - 30 years to determine any possible long-term effects, why would I concern myself with the possibility? (This would be a prime moment to glance at my screen name! :D :vapor:)

Well first off let me say hello all and vape on!
I'm so tired of the average Joe telling me how vaping is bad for you. We vapors understand the risk of vaping and it is a lesser evil than cigarettes. Usually I've noticed that when they say vaping has health risks I just say I wouldn't want to smoke arsenic and it shuts them up.
They try to base there facts on vaping from bold lies....I had one guy tell me glycerin crystallized and PG was what made antifreeze not freeze...that and he said there were fillers in commercial juice that were bad for you.
My response was this....PG IS IN INHALERS.....VG IS APPLYED TO SKIN....AND FLAVORS ARE NOT A RISK ALL FACTOR...excuse my caps lock it just irritates me when they base there opinions as facts....come on people that don't vape....wake up and smell 2015. I have vaped for almost a year with no health effects and there's many More that have vaped for 3-4 yaears with no health damage...
Ask a 5 year smoker or even a 1 year smoker the damage of there health

Sorry for my venting but this truth needs to be spread like wild fire and people need to know facts before opinions.
What kind of stuff have vape haters told you all?
Tell me your story. We all have one.
God bless y'all.
..

I just tell them that they should get the facts and not believe the garbage they hear on TV, because TV is in the business of selling ads, not telling the truth. I also point out that vaping is AT LEAST 95% safer than smoking, it's the only thing that ever worked to help me stop a THIRTY-NINE YEAR smoking habit, and if I quit vaping, I will go back to smoking -- it's one or the other. If they keep trying to spew garbage and lies, I walk away and just tell them I'm not in the habit of talking to idiots.

With my family, I take the trouble to explain that BT, BP, big evil gov't, and the alphabet soup of "charitable" orgs are losing a lot of money thx to vaping, and THAT is why they are telling lies about it -- not one of them gives an actual rip about anyone's health, just about their own pockets.
