I was intending not to replace the shutoff valve at all. I've never used it. I cut off the water by tripping the breakers, but maybe I should put a valve there anyway?

I'd put one in, for the "just in case" scenario. Or maybe you want to use water outside while you want it off inside for repairs.

Thanks, Robert and David.

I can blow a tiny bit of air through the valve... an extremely small amount. It's blocked.

Yes, there was a crimped copper band holding the.. PEX?.. tubing over the copper elbow. I melted the tubing with a torch in order to remove it from the copper elbow. I bought some stainless steel crimp rings but got tired of looking for the needed tool to crimp them, and will look for a push fitting/gator byte.

The PEX tubing is 7/8" outside diameter and 0.68" inside diameter to the best of my measuring ability with a good set of electronic calipers. The black pipe (CPVC?) is just barely over 1.0" outside diameter and 7/8" inside diameter.
The 3/4 inch push fittings will work on the Pex tubing.
But no way to connect to the PEX elbow without a proper crimping tool.
Lowes has them but the pinch clamp type is $50.

Not sure that I know my plastic pipe types. Delete "PVC" and replace with "some kind of plastic". Here's a picture. The main supply pipe is a fairly flexible black plastic, a piece of which is shown, that fits over the 3/4" dark gray connector on the right. The light gray piece of pipe on the left is the remainder of what used to fit over the copper elbow. Water flow is right to left. There's just enough left of that light gray pipe, visible in the picture, to put on the copper elbow. The end points of the red curved line are where I'm going to try to unscrew the connections, and then join them together with the blocked valve now gone. However, it would be so much easier if I could just get a connector to connect the black pipe on the right to the copper elbow. The copper elbow is not shown because it's underneath my house, still attached at one end to the pipe that goes into the house.

There's one I do accidentally that I always have a hard time undoing... it changes editing of text to "replace" instead of "insert". I hate it when that happens.
Next time that happens, hit the insert key, turns it off.

No, not 7/8" inside diameter. I get 21 mm average reading, which is more than 3/4" but less than 7/8". Must be 3/4" because that's the size of the barbed fittings that go into it.

PEX elbow? It's a copper elbow. But, I bent the end of the elbow some when I was removing the pipe from it, so maybe I should replace the elbow with a PEX elbow? If I do that, I'll have to get a decent tubing cutter to cut the PEX evenly beyond the end of the existing copper elbow.

Would that work, or did I go down a rabbit hole?

Thanks! You and Dancing have saved me from something that's been an occasional PITA for ages!

I must have hit it twice when I first tried that remedy a few days ago, and turned "replace text" back on again with the second key strike.

I just now experimented and yep, hitting the Insert key works perfectly to toggle the options. :thumb:

Yep and the cutter is cheap. It's a red handled (or gray) squeeze cutter with a big blade and an anvil it can pass thru. About $15 last time I checked.

We are back to running low heat at night & high ac during the day. It's not coming on much either way.
Not even thinkin about a/c at all. Tomorrow night is posed to be back in the 30's for about a week.......don't like it at all.

I LOVE the alt-tab to jump from one screen to the next. :)
the thing that I like is using tab + enter to post a reply rather than having to click post reply.

Meanwhile, I can only get water from my outside spigot. To do that, I block off the line that goes to the house.
oh dang, you still don't have water inside? that would make me nuts! Hope the fellas have helped you so you can get it fixed.

i remember seeing them in san jose before they made it to tv, i think. or at least before they got their own series.
I loved the smothers brothers! Hilarious and so talented!!

We have a postman who walks down the driveway to the front door to deliver something too big for the mailbox. Or sometimes he'll leave the box inside the open garage door with our mail on top. Nice guy.
I was so impressed with my son's mailman.....we have to use a key to lock and unlock the door even from the inside. Our dog goes beserk when someone comes to the door. First thing that impressed me was that my son had put a letter out to be mailed, but he forgot to put a stamp on it. That's why he came to the door.....so kewl. But, I had a wiggly dog under one arm.....box of envelopes that contained the stamps, got the stamps out holding them between a couple fingers.....keys looped over some other fingers.....so the mailman grabbed the stamps, took one off and put it on the letter for me. What a sweetheart!! Really appreciated him helping us out.

Well, got me an interview yomorrow

Well heck yeah! Two keys instead of one click. Almost as good as setting up speed dial for 911.
hehehe ok smarty pants. well since my hands are already on the keyboard, don't have to take em off, reach for the mouse, move the cursor to the post reply, click, then put em back on the keyboard

Me too... l like keyboard shortcuts.

PrtScrn copies the whole desktop to the clipboard
Alt + PrtScrn copies only the current window to the clipboard
"Window key" + R opens the "Run" dialog box
Ctrl + A highlights all text in a text box or document, or whole webpage
Ctrl + C copies all highlighted text to the clipboard
Ctrl + T "cuts" highlighted text and copies to clipboard
and many more.

Often a lot better than reaching for the mouse!
