Last night we went to the Honors Program at my daughters' high school... she went up on the stage to get awards at least 7 times!... I lost count. Beta club, Key club, Cheerleader, Yearbook staff, Honor Roll, all A's all year, I can't even remember all the stuff she got! She's also a healthy, smart, kind, beautiful Redhead. I can't even believe I helped "beget" someone like that! ;)

(proud Papa, can ya tell?) :D

So, how many buttons popped off your shirt? Nice!

Yay! That's really boss. Y'all have a great time today. This only happens for her once in a lifetime. That's one special girl. So hard to keep up with all of that good stuff in today's world.

I couldn't help but tell them how impressed I was at how they handled their young brood. It rather gave me some hope for future humanity.
Another reason to smile today. ;)

@umanbean , you should be proud of that young lady (as you are!). Enjoy your weekend, you all deserve it!

@Rotowoman , wow, there are some smart parents out there. Thanks for sharing! (sounds like uman and his bride are part of that distinguished group).

I have a downer to post but I am pretty upset. My 93 yr old Mother-in-law, who has been living in an independent living apartment for 2 years, a real go getter, don't mess with me, kind of woman who I have admired since I first met her, fell a few weeks ago. She just had eye surgery and had "floaters", one of which she thought was a bug and in trying to stomp on it, fell. Xrays showed nothing, they said she had siatica and to rest. Well, it didn't get better and she is basically alone;she doesn't socialize with others in the facility. She does not like "old people" (they die on her) and being the only Jew in the place, it was hard (DH and I were not involved in the decision to move her there, long story and this is long enough already).

Not getting better, the brother who lives near by took her back to the Dr. They did an MRI, found fractures in her pelvis. She got a rehab nurse, but being diabetic, was not eating or drinking. She was hospitalized yesterday to get her back in shape, then to rehab and then assisted living.

I am sure you all know where this will go. I have never heard of a person this age bouncing back to health from something like this. So how long? Who knows. From the vibrant, outgoing, strong woman I love, to a withering sad woman I still dearly love. We will spend as much time as we can with her, but with work and travel it is hard.

Sorry for a long downer post, but I needed to vent and I don't know of a better place than with my compassionate, loving friends.

On a good note, Geordi's breeder is a nurse at the hospital she is in, so she will check on MIL and keep us posted on any details we may miss. Chris is an ER nurse so not privy to everything, but she knows people who are.

I has a sad :(:cry::(

{{{{Cathy}}}} So sorry to hear about your MIL. Chin up and surround her with love. What will be will be, but the love doesn't go away.

Costco sells microfiber towels that I buy about once a year. I find they don't work as well once they're washed so instead i just toss em when they get too dirty. Always remember that they hang onto dirt so you don't want to use a "dirty" one to clean you glasses or other lenses. :)

I use them a lot and wash them frequently. They say not to put a dryer sheet in when you dry them. I try to fish them out and let them air dry, but some have gone in the dryer with the rest of the clothes. Still seem to work fine.

Well, my wife took off work today and I didn't schedule any service calls.

The HS graduation ceremony is Saturday morning, and we have a party planned for the afternoon. The party is at the semi-permanent campsite of the parents of Hannah's best friend, on Whitewater Creek - a very nice, shady spot w/ several campers set up, a couple of party sheds right on the creek, and a newly installed "ladies room" - complete with a flush toilet and a 55 gallon drum septic tank.

Today Mrs. Uman is making veggie & fruit trays, party decorations, banners, balloons, etc. I'm going to town to collect for a finished job, then to the Creek to mow, trim, set up my audio gear, and generally clean up and prepare. Then I'm off on a two hour drive to spend the night with Mom, and drive her up here in the morning by 10 am. to the graduation, then to party, then back to her home... whew!

I'm gonna be a busy bee for the next ~48 hrs.

You gotta be one proud Papa!! That's fantastic!

Last night I took myself out to a nice sit down dinner at Chilis. I was seated at a booth all to myself in a pretty quiet spot and was relaxing and watching a college baseball game at the same time.

About halfway through my dinner, a little family of six came in and were seated behind me. The kids were 5, 4, 3, and 2. They were typical kids and every once in a while one of the little one's voice would get a little loud, but Mama would just do "Shhhh", and it would quiet back down. Mom and Dad were talking to the children and using the menu as a learning experience. It was pretty entertaining and cute to listen to. My point being was that Mom and Dad had everything under control and there was no running, screaming, or anything of that nature. It was pretty doggone refreshing after what I've seen of other similar families eating out.

I wound up talking to the couple and the kids, and the Mom even gave me a fantastic recipe for Queso. I couldn't help but tell them how impressed I was at how they handled their young brood. It rather gave me some hope for future humanity.

It's a good idea to take kids to restaurants and teach them how they should behave. Then everyone can have a good time. It makes me crazy when kids are allowed to run wild and act out. I've always insisted that even at home our kids have good manners so they know how to act when they're out. We've had waitstaff compliment us and our kids on their behavior-which tells you how usual it is that parents don't discipline their kids.

Matt, CONGRATULATIONS on 4 years! It's amazing to think that it wasn't that long ago that it would have been so hard to go 4 hours without a cigarette!!

Not sure why Miles had that fever yesterday, but we knew something was up when he just wasn't his perky self. He woke up from his nap with the fever. Tylenol is a miracle medicine! 20 minutes after we gave it to him he was so much better!

I finally got caught up here this morning and now I have to scoot and get some errands done. It's going up to 90 today so the pepper plants won't get planted until after dinner when it's cooler. Had to turn the AC on yesterday. As much as I appreciate the AC it was so nice to be able to just have the windows open.

She usually goes off-line when she is getting chemo.

That's what I was kinda thinking, too. I just didn't know if she is on a cycle right now or not. Looks like she was online Monday morning, but not since... I guess I'll just keep praying that all goes well with her. :) Chemo is no fun and makes you feel really crummy, my Bride is halfway through her current 2 week cycle right now. It's hard to watch someone you love go through this stuff. :(

Awesome!! Thanks, Deb! I'm very glad to hear that she's relaxing and getting some good down time. As long as all is well with her, I'm a happy guy. :)

From the "Morning Musing on a Rainy Wednesday in Flyover Country" File ::

I read an op-ed piece as I had my first cup this AM, who's premise was the Web is the most democratizing, field leveling invention since the printing press ..

The internet connects to many people from many cultures that are different than our own. The potential for sharing of ideas is tremendous .. then, I thought about it for a moment ..

In practice, it doesn't work that way at all. Social Networking and targeted content has removed any possibility of that by effectively ensuring we never have to communicate with anyone we disagree with or hear any contrary or dissenting voices. In effect, we've gone beyond the old AOL corporate walled garden and now have the ability to create our own personal walls.

We "friend" only people who we think like us, quickly "unfriending" any that might be questionable, we follow only voices that say the same things we do and have all our news and information pre-selected based on what Facebook, Google or Yahoo thinks we want. The more we feed the algorithm, the more targeted it becomes. Then we block those with differing ideas that we disagree with.

That doesn't even account for the fact that the Internet is now controlled by a very small number of large companies feeding us the content. Google and Facebook essentially control the flow of information to many people and many major sites allow you to sign in with one of those accounts in order to post comments.

This pushback of diversity has resulted in the same pushback in our real lives as we live more and more of our lives in front of screens and get used to that comfort level. We've never been more segregated and isolationist despite having the ability to connect and share more than ever before.

Totally agree.

That's the problem. I did ALL of that. Plus turned off network data. Basically the phone is set up to only do voice calls and text messaging. Still drains the battery at an alarming rate. My last phone would go 4-5 days between charges. This one needs to be plugged in by lunch time, and again before bed...
