I use an orbital, then a finishing sander. Then hand if it needs it, but rarely. Now, I usually stain. One, mebbe two coats. Then the poly. Never less than 6 coats. Usually 8. That will pretty much hide any imperfections. Yeah, the can sez two coats. That's to seal and protect. To make it a mirror, you need a lot more than two.

Thank you, Semi! Very much appreciated! :)

Ack! Don't even get me started... Like I said, the only time I use those is if I'm going to be priming and painting... paint covers up a lot of that, so I don't feel so bad about little swirls then. But if it's going to be getting a dozen coats of antique wax, then yeah... hand sanded down to 1200 grit... at least.

I've had no issues on my end... but I've been off and on...

Glad to hear that everything is getting taken care of, Bells! Gonna be like a whole new ride! :D
You meticulous craftsmen and craftswomen are remarkable to me.

You got it Kaez! Wishing you and your Bride the best!

Thank you! Headed out the door very shortly, but I'll give y'all an update on how the appointment goes as soon as I'm able. :)

You meticulous craftsmen and craftswomen are remarkable to me.

For me, it is less about being meticulous and more about the fact that I'm rarely completely happy with any of my projects. I see every single flaw every time I look at it... so I have to try to avoid as many flaws as possible so that I'm more able to actually enjoy the darned thing for what it is...

That is why doing it for charity is much better-- you don't have to stare at the flaws.

I just finished refurbishing a 10ft long rattan display center. I call it refurbish when I do not take it back to bare wood. There levels of finish - some glassy some medium glossy and the prime areas are satin. Makes the light reflect differently from different angles. Took me almost 3 weeks to finish it - my arms needed a lot of breaks...

I don't think I've ever been to the GRB for anything. I've been to Reliant Park, Minute Maid, Pasadena Fairgrounds, and a coupla other places, though. That does sound like a pretty cool event to go and check out, but I highly doubt that my Bride would fare any better than you, Sweetheart. We went to Walmart this past Saturday, and that pretty much wore her out for the rest of the weekend. She just doesn't have the energy levels to actually get out and enjoy anything like that any more. :(

That's probably why I procrastinate so much on a lot of projects that I really want to do. I LOVE woodworking, but it takes me 3X longer to get anything done because I hand sand everything down to a really fine grit. If anything doesn't look right, then I go back up two grit sizes and keep working it until I'm happy... it's beautiful when I'm done, but there is a lot of frustration between starting and finishing. [emoji38]
I'm the same way with some things. Sometimes something just draws my attention everytime I look at it & it must be corrected. I know when something is going to irriate this nerve, so I fix it at once & move on. But precision is why I like handwork. Really wish I had a place for a small shop or just a work bench.

I'm gonna have to get out of here a bit early today. Gotta take off in an hour and a half to take my Bride down to M.D. Anderson. We're meeting with the head of their clinical trial group to find out what else they can possibly offer her for treatment, since none of the traditional chemos seem to be working. Of course, we're doing our own research as well, but it certainly won't hurt to go find out what is available here. Any positive vibes and prayers that y'all can spare for us to get some good news today would be greatly appreciated!
Praying.

But that help will require proof/verification. I won't help blindly, I will need to know the help is justified. I have helped in the past to find the person just wanted to mooch. Ain't happenin again!

Yepper, got 'reeled in' several years ago; too anxious to help. Not no mo' without proper vetting...

But did they call it seex?

Only in Texas!

It appears that you are going for the best, but prayers always help.

GOOD MORNING PORCHERS!!!
What are we - knockoffs from China??? :D:w00t::lol:
No, Semi. You know I luv ya's! Just not "that way", ha, ha!!!

Just something about that "old world" style that appeals to me. ;)
Yessir, it's called "Craftsmanship". ;)

Man, I just can't help but think we're cut from the same cloth! I do a lot of scale modeling and I've been known to strip a paint job 2 or 3 times if there's even the slightest flaw that I can't sand or buff out.
Sorry I didn't get here before you left but you know our hearts and positive energy are always with the two of you!!!

LOL! I actually have one of those... I just use it for the rough sanding of things that I'm going to end up painting. If it's something that is going to get stain and varnish or whatever, then I usually go it by hand. Hell, I still use a hand saw and hand plane for a lot of things... and many times, I put things together without nails or screws. Just something about that "old world" style that appeals to me. ;)

I have one just like this. Used it for many years before I bought a power 'chop saw'. There was just something 'old timey' feeling when using it.

In some circles these are considered verboten. Swirl marks. I can just see Kaez trying to get them out...:cool:

But that's just for the 1st go-round. Then I follow up w/ one of these:

But like Kaz said for the 'ultra' finishing ... it's down to hand sanding. Then finish and between coats perhaps some 000 or 0000 steel wool.

And then sometimes it's just relaxing using these on a project.

Flaw avoidance is so completely beyond my abilities that I learned a long time ago to embrace my flaws. Then I found out that once in a while, this caused others to embrace my flaws too, which was a nice side effect.

Philosophical preachy mode off.

I need to take my car back to the shop again tomorrow for replacement of a totally ruptured CVJ boot, but once that's done, I'm as cross-country ready as I'll ever be. Everything else is fixed, at least for the moment. They couldn't do the boot today because they can't get the part today... has to come from Subaru.

Happy with the prices and the work. Total cost for everything to get fixed, including a new battery and 4 Michelin Defenders, just 5% of what a new $23K vehicle would have cost me.

Yup! Old school rules! It's like those Kreg joints, that's NOT cabinetry OR craftsmanship! It's American IKEA (IMO).

Man, that baby should be in tip top shape now, Dave! Did you replace the battery? It sounds like it's probably time to. On a related note, the original battery in our truck lasted 7 years. Same with the original battery in my bike. Both were driven daily and for fairly long distances at a time though and the bike got a battery tender from day one.

This is about the only kind of tools they had in the Philippines with my wife's family. You should of seen their faces when I introduced them to power tools...

Yeah, I edited my previous message to include the battery but you had posted already.

The windshield washer problem was just a loose connection. No, I didn't ask them to look at the driver's side window, because it definitely would have been a "cannot duplicate problem" type of thing. I've always been able to get it working by fiddling with the switch, so far, and it only fails to work the first time maybe one time in twenty.

No brake issues, no engine issues and no transmission issues was really nice to hear.

So how many 18650's does it take to run a circular saw? :D
