Just curious - are they on 50 or 60 hertz?

They are at 50 hertz. Their main problem is that unless you buy one and have the electric company install it and charge you for it monthly - they do not use transformers on the poles so the power pulses a lot - using a small transformer helps some, but does not smooth it out quite right and it is still at 50 hertz instead of 60 hertz like ours is, which translates into shorter lifetimes for electrical appliances and such - especially the ones that are converted or are being used with a small transformer.

I'm sorry ... Glad it was "barely." DST should be called Standard Time, now. There are more DST months than not! Here's a fun fact about DST: the prevailing story that DST was established to help farmers is a myth. Farmers actually were the biggest opponents to DST; evidently, cows don't adjust to time changes at all well :). The US adopted DST at WWI, to take advantage of daylight and save energy. Seems that my 3rd grade teacher got it wrong

Yea, making everyone in the US go to work one hour earlier or one hour later that relied on daylight and leaving everyone else alone just did not make sense - had to make it complicated for the whole world instead...

Edit - typo...

Most of the world doesn't use Daylight Savings Time. (A large part of the world uses it but a larger part does not.) I have no personal preference, but found this article interesting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time

I'm a city girl, and I don't fly planes or drive trains, so daylight savings time doesn't cause me any problems. I always loved it. As a kid, we had to come on when the streetlights went on. Bam! An extra hour of play time! For the majority of my career, I went to work at O'Dark-thirty, and left somewhere around 7-7:30 PM. That extra hour of evening light always cheered me up when I had a bad day. And now, it's an extra hour or so to watch the birds, walk the dogs, play golf, or do something fun with my sweetie. Happy time!

ETA: just noticed that ECF doesn't share my fondness for DST!

Actually, many newer electric motors are wound to work equally well at either frequency. Cheaper than making two versions of the same thing.

So distribution is at 220? I'd say terribly inefficient, but in an area prone to frequent destruction of the infrastructure, probably a lot cheaper to just restring the lines than to restring the lines and replace the blown transformers. So if that's the rationale, it makes sense. Yeah, line loss and no "buffering" from sudden loads elsewhere on the system can play havoc.

Probably right on that, Matt. My CRS said Colorado - gotta have that antenna up high!! - and didn't think CO had more than one town big enough :) (And I'm guessing that today's Coloradans don't mind. Much of anything as long as the snack bar is open! [emoji23]
IIRC Ft. Collins isn't all that big.

You have potential (as the nose grows). Yes, cute commercial. Also like the one where the cowboy rides away and into the letter on The End, where he fallsoff his horse.
I think that's one of the funniest commercials I have ever seen. I laugh every time I see it. "I'm a loner and a loners gotta be alone." What great dialog.

That almost royally screwed up my morning. If there was any mention of it on the toob this weekend I missed it and my phone never did an automatic time update for some reason. When I got up I couldn't figure out why my computer time was one hour ahead but my phone said "other". Barely made it to an appointment on time.

DST is the dumbest concept ever.
I'm not a big fan either. I had a neighbor growing up in Daytona who was a wheat farmer from N. Dakota. He called it "stoopid time"!

So sad. Heard on the news the beautiful Irish Setter that won 2nd overall at Crufts was, it looks like, poisoned. What the f#=~; is this world coming to?

Jagger was such an amazing dog! This is horrible, and this same type of thing was suspected in 2013 at Westminster, a samoyed named Cruz. Pm'd you as soon as I heard it this am, but figured you'd hear it too.

Oh, and when I post something like this, it is not my intention in any way to insult anyone or try to prove how smart I am. It's just another tidbit of useless (maybe) knowledge that's kicking around in the old noggin. Also brought back some great memories.

It's interesting! Nephew wants to get a Ham and license. We're all kinda interested in it. Would be especially handy if all other comms go down at some point. At least I think it would. Wouldn't that still work if we got a huge hit to "the grid" and phones and net went down? That's our thinking anyhow.

I don't mind at all. I gladly share my addiction love of emoticons with anyone. Just that kinda gal. . .

Hey.....where did you find that pic of me when i wuz skinny??? (but someone cut my hair, it was long when I was skinny). lol Thanks hun, snatched a few of those. Now I just gotta be able to remember which ones I have so I can use em. lol Giggle Head Shake.gif

so glad I'm not the only one that stared at that forever before I finally got it
Here's one that comes in handy on occasion. ~> View attachment 418496
thanks!!

That is a nice collection! Maybe we ought to ask the mods to insert some of them into our catalog, so we wouldn't have to import them.

We used to have a TON more of em, and they took a bunch of em out.

Then there's the great Canadian police chase...

Omggggggg that was hilarious!!!!

Just got back from town man it's hot out there already!
How's everyone doing today :)

No No No No one is allowed to complain about how hot it is yet!!! lol

Me being waaaayyy over here on the right coast - boy is that signal a bear to pick up most times. Has to be the right window, the right time of night, and even the right moon phase I think. lol

Did you know you can sync your computer to NIST too?

It's actually on a whole bunch of different freqs. Supposedly so you can get it any time of day. We're you trying to get the 20 meters frequency?
