I have a front and a back porch. Both of which I use. Where do I belong lol.

And I bet you enjoy both. :) Same here. Same wonderful people on both porches. We're just glad you are here. Nice to meet you and. . .

True. And they are given participation trophies. Really sad. Failure is one of the most important things growing.

let me fix that.:D it should read: True. And they are giving participation trophies. Really sad. Failure is one of the most important things growing up.

I had 3 threads open and trying to read and respond in all of them. Apparently, I'm too old to do that anymore. But, then again, you people are probably too old to even notice.

Sorry, the Muse is on me and so ..

On Failure .. it used to be considered a Rite of Passage, a known commodity that would touch most all of us at some point, whether it was personal, job related, relationship related .. yet, thru failure, we grew, we learned, we got through it, we picked up the pieces and vowed to not repeat .. it made us a better person in many ways ..

I have failed much more than I have succeeded .. because I have stepped beyond my comfort zone .. because I learned from the failure .. because the failure was the Best Lesson of All .. because failure cannot be taught ..

How can we grow without failure .. ?? If the right to fail is taken away, how do we know when we succeed .. ?? Failure as a thing, could be considered an important aspect of life in general ..

and as Yoda said "Do. Or do not. There is no try." ..

Please tell me more about the "Hangout". Do we see each other?? My laptop has a built in camera and I've seen myself but not so sure I'm ready to "go public".

he, he ... you can mute your camera.
And you can mute it before you finish joining. :D

As far as tech goes. Someone somewhere once said:
"The only thing this chicken scratch on parchment will accomplish is that the memory of out youth is going to atrophy! I don't see any use for it and I should k ow because I remember every single poem and ballad in that there scroll thing!"

Or to put it a different way. Same worries, different century. ;)

Hi everyone, been kinda busy, just poppin' in to say hi. Mother in law had hip replacement surgery yesterday and came through it ok. If y'all would, I'm asking for prayers that recovery goes well for her and that she can go home in a couple of weeks. Doc said the amount of time she'll be in the hospital depends on how well she does with physical therapy. She's 80 now and while she has a good attitude and will do everything she needs to to get better, I know she's dealing with anxiety about it all.

Matt, glad your appt. went OK and sending positive vibes that the results of your test come out OK. By the way, you didn't happen to pick up one of those biscuits for me did ya? :w00t:

Last but not least, a big welcome to our newest visitors, y'all pull up a rocker and sit a spell, lots of knowledge, good stories, laughter, and love here on the back porch.

Perhaps both :)

Per ECF rules, our front porch is supposed to stay on vaping topics. Our back porch, in the "social forum" area, isn't so restricted.

Welcome to the Porches!

Of course, any "porch" will do and,,, you get extra points for having a rocker!

Probably not teleportation but, I'll bet the holodeck will be possible and sooner than later. The only part of that that I don't think will happen anytime soon is the tactile sensation. Like reaching out and touching the girls cheek, etc.

I saw a report on the news the other night. I don't remember all the specific details but it was about an app that does their homework for them. Literally scan in the problem, the app figures out what the scan says, gives you the answer and then if you want gives you the steps to solve it, just in case you have to show your work. Scary. Pretty soon most people won't be able to solve anything without the phone or computer. God help us if the war starts with an EMP attack. No one could invent anything.

It is sad but we still have literature. EMP can't break my books! ;)

Welcome to both! We're glad to have you jump in whenever you want. So, grab a rocker, relax and tell us about yourself.

On Letter Writing / Modern Tech / General Rant .. the Era we now reside in has truly become the Brave New World .. with a clear cut direction of accelerated innovation .. from the marvels of Video Chat, online communities to the advances in Medical Tech, life extension and so, so many more Marvels many, if not most of us have lived to witness ..

Yet, there is a simple pleasure to putting a pen to a paper, working with your mind and your hands to create something .. learning a new skill that is rooted in the Old ..

As each generation rises up to replace the last, sometimes I wonder if we don't lose a little more of the soul from days gone by .. increasingly, the gap between the Haves and the Have Nots widens .. for all we have done to advance, there are still folks that go hungry, here in the Land of Plenty ..

A good portion of our Youth has simply given up .. pacified by the Tech in many ways .. Drones that work at minimally rewarding jobs, with no real goal or drive for what the future holds .. it actually becomes refreshing when you run across a youth that actually does seem to care ..

And, right or wrong, even considering the Technological Wonders we've lived to see, I sense a high degree of just plain laziness that the Tech has helped create .. when I was a child, my neighborhood was always brimming with kids playing, riding bikes, tossing a baseball .. now, neighborhoods seem like Urban Wastelands designed as the receptacle of Homes, where even a small lot requires the use of a riding lawn mower or the payment to a Yard service ..

This change is not just rooted in the young .. all age groups seem to drift toward being participants rather than doers, with some exception, of course .. because there is such a wealth of distraction in entertainment / mobile devices, etc, that it becomes so easy to wile away the hours / days / weeks / months / years .. what will the Future look like .. ??

Yet here I am .. :)

It seems the value of actually earning or accomplishing something is not being taught or experienced these days. And heaven forbid a child might have their feelings hurt or experience a scraped knee. Schools are outlawing outdoor games because a child might get hurt. It's so sad. Goals? That might encourage actual thought to figure out how to get there. Is it any wonder we're raising people who can't handle life and just lash out when things don't go their way?

And the laziness, we had gone to Lowe's to talk to a kitchen designer but she wasn't in. They only have 1 now. In talking with one of the employees he told us they had 28 "good paying" positions open, not just entry, bottom rung positions. 8 people applied. 6 failed the drug test and one never bothered to show up. Yep, we got an unemployment problem.

or the lawsuit that comes with the child getting hurt. I have seen it in person where an individual tried to build a complaint out of what they allowed to happen and it just should not be that way...

On these type things, it's usually the person that ends up out of a job that does the complaining .. in this case, I suppose the Wandering Minstrel / Bard .. ;)

In the last 5 years, I have attempted to hire an apprentice .. on the hope that what skill I have could at least be passed on after my exit .. no, I'm not going to pay huge money, but $10.00 an hour to start and the shot at an actual, life long skill, that will provide for a good living as long as you want to do it .. custom wood work / instrument building and repair is a niche area that is getting to be a dying art, thus, the future should be quite bright for anyone that is willing to learn the craft ..

3 walkouts after 2 days OJT, 4 failed drug tests, 3 would not pass a background check (I'm not going to hire someone that might steal from me) .. to top it all off, I really have no one to pass on the tools / workshop / clients that would do anything more than auction it all .. so, a quality apprentice, over time, that could earn my trust and do the work, might have reaped additional reward .. as it stands, I give up .. it's actually quite sad ..
