Glad you got to meet the Iffster. That's two down and several to go. If you write down the locations of the other folks you want to meet and schedule the dog shows you attend accordingly bet you could meet all of us in a couple of seasons!:banana::banana:

Meet Me in St Louie Louie
Wow, .. :) .. I need to get the boxes I ordered first and experiment some .. the thickness of the wood sides being my main concern .. I'll need to build a jig to clamp the boxes in which must be on a rotational platform, since a lot of turning around is involved and they are relatively small items hard to grip by hand, especially with arthritis .. as far as material, I have an 80 drawer old wood library card catalog that contains everything I need, but thanks ..

If the large side of these things is too thin for inlay work, I'll likely inlay another piece of wood and then clamp and glue that to the box .. it will make them slightly thicker .. then feather the edges to blend with the original .. How does this look to you .. ??

On a side note, I don't know the rules and regs on ECF as it relates to even casual discussion of anything that might be considered business and what not .. so, just for the record, I am not in any way, shape or form soliciting anything from anyone .. what we are having is a casual, what if discussion .. with any input from other Posters simply coincidental ...

If my rememberer is correct the flat side is approximately 1/8" thick or just a little bit thinner. Seapeach can probably measure the one she has. Not to say you would be copying it or anything.
I have been thinking about using clear acrylic (lexan/plexiglass) to build my next mod. I would do a "blasted" finish with clear areas for the display and design on the large side. Possibly smoked but, most likely not. I've been watching videos and reading up on how to glue them together so they look like they were made in one piece with no visible joints. I want to round the corners to make them smooth and comfortable to grip. You can buy mechanical mods made like that from fastech but, not the quality I'm trying to produce. It would just be for my personal use. Probably using the new SX-350 Temperature Control board and a 1 amp charger. A dual parallel battery setup as I like the battery life I can obtain from them. Anybody know who stateside is selling the SX-350 Temp Control boards?

That is gorgeous Willie! You are definitely a master craftsman.

I've been sketching a few ideas since yesterday .. one thing I'm hitting a wall with is the size of these box mods .. they are smaller than what I normally would have to work with, thus making it more difficult to fit something really intricate into the space and still keep the time involved in doing it down .. that may be why no one else seems to be doing this type inlay with a box mod, at least that I can see ..

on average, it looks like around 4.5" x 2.5" .. and at least a 1/2 - 1/3rd inch should be left as a border, leaving a 4" x 2" area to work with max .. that's fairly small .. and from what I can see, a side fire button is most desirable .. I also kinda like the look of models that have a pistol like finger grip on the side ..

Not having had any first hand experience with these devices, it's a learning curve ..

As you can probably tell, I've been digging into the whole sub-culture the last couple days .. one thing that did cross my mind is the use of a 3-D printer would seem to be an ideal match for the casings .. on wood material, another thought was a laser engraver which would allow someone to put about anything they wanted on the box, including a photo .. just some random thoughts ..

Wow, you just took my heartstrings. If this all works out, I'll be wanting to talk to you about a few flowers. Please don't let us talk you into something you don't want to do, though, ok? Please?

I feel so special! I got a genuine, real life, IFFY HUG! He came to the dog show! We had a nice chat, then a fellow vaper came in with her dog to buy something. So cool! Wish I had the rick rack dancer or dancing banana on my phone!!!

Nice!

WHOA, all da pleasure was mine (three hugs and a couple cheek kisses; I counted)!

But woe be me, as with Gracie, Classy and Robino, Cathy also has a 'chauffeur'! D-rats...

Seriously, Cathy is just a lil' energetic bundle of effervescence and personality!

Although Geordi wasn't present (my true heart stealer), Tasha was the grande dame! She did her lil' investigation and presented her head for some attention. What an adorable life form!

Ya'll need to pressure Cathy to post her video that 'sealed da deal' with Geordi!!! Priceless...

BTW, I've watched day-um near all the dog shows televised for decades. BUT, seeing and watching those 'best friends of man' in person in competition is a totally different experience! <wish I was dat pampered thru out my existence; but then again, maybe not; never mind>

On the flipside, the allure of turning out a very limited number of box mods, with designs that are unique to each and essentially one of a kind, is the same allure as building a hand made instrument .. I know people will appreciate it, people will touch it and use it, the work will exist long after I'm gone, it's somewhat of a legacy, and who knows .. ?? In a hundred years, I may have a piece in the "PV Hall of Fame Museum" .. since I've given up on getting my picture on the cover of "Rolling Stone" .. ;)

Yeah but... ya got personalized pics of those that have!

Just think 'tween da frets! Your excuse kung-fu is weak...

Ahhh! That's wonderful! It's great to be able to meet some of our esteemed porchers! Glad he was able to make it down to see you.

Good heavens Willie, if I had an inlaid tree like that I'd just frame it and look at it all the time! It's absolutely GORGEOUS! Hold on, I'm having palpitations! Seriously, it's exquisite! You definitely have a gift.

If you were doing mods though, your design would not nearly be so complicated. That should help as long as you could manage it on wood that thin. Or what about doing it on a larger piece of wood, then cut the edges down and affix it to the mod so it's raised?

I think you should try some just as a fun thing to do. It could be very relaxing. See how it goes and then decide if you want to do them on a larger scale.

Sorry, we've got stuff to do around here related to the kitchen renovation and we're both pooped. I took a rest to check the thread so I wouldn't get too far behind. Tomorrow night might be a better for us.
