that afternoon I got one of the pills out of the container that I'd put on the upper counter in the kitchen sometime between when i showed them to Amy and that afternoon.and managed to get it down her

Pill can be a challenge...

One of ours - brother to my now departed avatar - has a thyroid condition, and gets a pill twice a day for that. (He's been on it for over two years now, and at age 14 still doing fine. Avatar had to be put down late spring... :( )

But the Pill Pockets work well. Come in Salmon and Chicken. Stuff the pill in, crush into a ball, and it's a treat. (They make them for dogs, too.) So, if the regimen has to go on long, might be worth looking into :0

Have to try those next time we have to drug the cat for our trip to Florida. Last time it was a nightmare!

They do work pretty well, although there are still times.... Mugwort will usually "take" the pill in the pocket, but sometimes becomes recalcitrant. A couple times stuffed down his throat, and he likes 'em again

Now, his brother Red was another story.... took his feline nature seriously. Saw him take a Stellar's Jay out of the air once, after it had been dive bombing him repeatedly  - after which the Jay's cheering buddies all got quiet and left. But he'd come close to taking off fingers with pills, so tried to always get any meds for him in liquid form. Droppers were do-able. Barely

Best procedure I've found for giving a cat a pill...

Pill in one hand, kneel down and straddle cat. Use other hand (thumb and index finger) to open mouth, push pill as far as you can and hold the cat's mouth shut, then stroke the cat's throat from chin down a few times to initiate the swallow.

Years agoI had a german shepherd who in her older years needed these little tiny black pills. I would put on in her kibble, mixed with some canned food to a nice mush, and later find the little pill on the floor somewhere. How she picked that little pill out of the mess, who knows. But she did like peanut butter. Spock got wise to peanut butter in his elderly years and I had to use the shove down the throat approach.

While it's generally true that it's easier to fool dogs than cats (regarding pills, that is!), they are all really individuals, aren't they.

And I've had times with cats that, 10 minutes after getting the pill down they'll spit it back out. Just WHERE they hid it in their mouth is a mystery....

I've always believed in "Quality of Life" .... let me suggest you invite all of us over for a "Family Boucherie" .. ;)

Whoops! Get my mind out of the gutter. My 1st read of your post and I thought you folks were getting quite familiar in the hangout and you were asking her to invite everyone over for some Family Debauchery.

Nah... and the trick to getting them to keep the pill down once it's in is to give 'em a treat. Food pushes the pill on to stomach rather than is just sitting part way down the throat :)

As for getting the pill into the cat in the first place ... I suggest kevlar

Not being a regular attendee, I cannot, of course, speculate what goes on at all times, nor would I try .. I will admit to being much more liberal with my own personal anecdotes, etc .. and there was a couple times, er, forget it, stopping here .. .. I will add, "Family Debauchery" sounds so wrong on so many levels .. ;)

And, someday, when the Stars Align, I would very much like you and Janet to be there when I arrive .. Glenlivet in hand and prepared for mayhem ..

Not being much of a Pet Person, I will ask a stupid question .. why not just grind the pills up and mix .. ??[/Q

I don't think you're capable of asking a "stupid question", but I do think that cats, especially, are very slick and they have excellent noses, they'd smell it even ground up and stick their noses up at it. Tho I did outsmart Tukii earlier.... I put her liguid meds in a small serving of canned food /gravy and mixed it well...it musta smelled good to her cuz she ate it up!

Might not pull it off the next time tho...

Yep, as Mrs C said, they can smell and taste it. Sounds like an easy solution, but more often does not work. And some pills, like that tiny black pill, were almost impossible to crush. Even with a mortar and pestal (I tried!).
