Had a great time, last night at Deb's place. Connection was good, people were great. Damn, this is starting to turn in to a habit! :D Just need to ensure we don't neglect our other forum friends. It was nice meeting our friend Wolfenstark in person. I think it's always nice when another person we haven't actually met in person shows up. Whoever thought this whole idea up deserves a huge pat on the back. Since we seem to be limited to 10 people at a time I am going to look into different software solutions. The caveat being it has to be universally available, cross platform compatible and (the operative parameter) free. Does anybody know the limits of Skype? Also there is a program called "Go to Meeting" but, I don't think it's free because it's targeted at corporate collaboration and teleconferencing. Is this whole idea something I should pursue or are we happy with the 10 person limit?

The following 3 paragraphs are from various pages of the Skype URL furnished by Gary. I believe that the 25 person statement is for audio calls only, not for audio/video.

Group calls: Share big news with the family or work closely with a team of colleagues – you can even add up to 25 people to your call.

Group video calls are subject to a fair usage limit of 100 hours per month with no more than 10 hours per day and a limit of 4 hours per individual video call. Once these limits have been reached, the video will switch off and the call will convert to an audio call.

We recommend calls with up to five people.

My point of view: I will not personally do any work whatsoever, no matter how minuscule the task, to reinvent the wheel. It would be a violation of my Maynard G Krebs non-work ethic.

If I ever go to the Google Hangout and find that I can't join because I'm the 11th person, I'll just wait until there's a slot open. If and when someone finds a superior venue, I'll check it out if it involves no work for me to do so. The chances that I'd be willing to sign up for any paid service are nil, considering that the existing Google Hangout is free.

Im reading 10 people but 150 people can be there typing
If you're talking about the Google Hangout, you have to "join the call" before you can use the text communication box, so the maximum number is still 10.

Ah yes , seems that number must be starting a hangout just with messaging.

Specifications for sending and receiving messages
  • You can have a group Hangout with up to 150 people.
Requirements and specifications for video calls
There are a few specifications and limitations of video calls that you should be aware of:

  • Video calls can have a maximum of 10 participants.
  • There's a 150 minute check-in to make sure you're still there (for Google Apps for Work, the check-in is after 12 hours).
  • You need to have a broadband connection to the Internet.
  • We recommend using USB web cameras and BlackMagic devices for the best video call experience. Other devices, like virtual cameras, may not work with Hangouts.
