You take great pics! The bottom one looks as tho i'm looking thru ice at some stems below!
It's poly coated and smooth, but does have texture you feel in your hand. I love that 3-d effect. Well, I just LOVE everything about it. Now I have to learn to use it.

I made that comment the other night too. It's a wooden box that has a few cavities and holes carved into it, most likely with a dremel or a router and finished real nice. $200+ price. There is no doubt in my mind that you could build them as well as or better. It's a mechanical mod so no extraordinary circuitry needed. Can't bad mouth them though. They definately have their followers and they can be rather rabid.

Don't hit me Deb!

I nosed around some last night with Mr Google initially researching unregulated builds .. I'd suspect many, if not the majority, of the makers are using a CNC machine, which I don't have, but Rockler makes some quality machines that are relatively inexpensive ..

Since I have a small warehouse stacked with various exotic woods, that's all bought and paid for .. looking at the required hardware seems to me in wholesale, the highest quality I can find would still be under $20.00 per unit ..

When I gave it serious thought, I lean toward believing entering this space now is likely a little late .. those companies that have been in the space and built a reputation over time have captured a market that maintains a very solid customer base .. there appears to also me some mystique / reverence / for some that a new guy would be hard pressed to capture .. unless the new guy really made some stand out work .. just an exotic wood box that looks nice seems to be well covered with what's out there now .. if I were, on the other hand, to go into hand inlay, custom per-customer work and get really specialized, at the end of the day, it's still a wood box with some hardware and inlay / custom is time consuming, thus driving the price up ..

So, I'm on the fence, essentially .. I called a close friend master woodcrafter who has a CNC machine, I've known for many years this morning and asked if I were to provide the project files and the wood rough cut to the needed size, what would he charge me and I can get 500 boxes turned out at $8.00 a box ..

What I'm saying next has no bearing on the current makers of these mods, more power to them is what I say .. however, at what I believe is under $30.00 per unit actual cost for me, the markup on these things is very, very high .. of course, I already have the wood, so other makers have to buy that .. but still, I'd estimate for them under $40.00 per unit .. and since there is really no reason why production should be limited, it may be that other makers artificially keep production low in order to further the mystique .. that's not a bad thing .. if you make 500 units and that's it for this cycle, your equipment and initial investment is tax deductible fully the first year under the current tax structure, it costs you on the high side $40.00 per unit, which is also tax deductible .. that's, with equipment, parts, wood, etc still under $25,000 ..

yet, if you can sell them, you gross $100 K and net $75 K at just $200.00 per unit ..

In my case, I could farm out the woodwork .. thus making my cost $28.00 per unit max .. or $14 K total box / parts inclusive .. at $200 a pop, that's still $100 K gross, with an $86 K net

The question being, could I sell 500 units in a reasonable period of time as a start up .. consider the cost of a Web Site and other ads ..

At any rate, it was an interesting study of this home grown market segment and gave me quite a bit of insight that I did not have, so I figured I'd share what I learned .. :)

errr so whats your point :D

If you're asking me, my point was surrounding those on the thread that encouraged me to get into the box mod business knowing my experience in instrument work and wood ..

Good morning all. Unc Willie, I have a similar knowledge base. Great post.

Bob .. I was not attempting in any way, shape or form to cast any shadow on the box mod makers .. Made in the USA goods should and do carry a premium price .. considering what I do to make money, I would be a hypocrite to say otherwise .. although I will add that the hardware seems to be imported from what research I did .. it is what it is ..

Theres plenty of goods and services that may not be worth what they cost.
Up to the individual to judge if they want to buy it.
The rationality only has to be judged by themselves - I say that because mine does not always make sense.

Yes! calm but very surprised  This is the first contest I have ever entered on ECF and it was for sure unplanned - just started to read the contest thread and got caught up in the manic posting that was going on.

Not sure what my prize will be - had to rank 20 choices and most of them I have no idea about. Anyway - depending on what I actually win - I will probably be needing some help to figure it out.

Not sure if this is the last - this now makes 50 runner ups - great group of vendors to donate this many prizes. For sure ECF continues to be a great resource and I owe so much not only to ECF - but also the wonderful Front and Back porch peoples........

Good to see you Willie - loved the tunes and margaritas! I will have to try using both the Grand Marnier and Cointreau. I was just using the Grand Marnier - then recently switched to Cointreau and like it better. Now I have an excuse to mix one up - need to try it with both :)

@seapeach - lovely little brown eyed beauties - oh and the Reo was pretty nice too :)

@runamok - sorry you are having problems.

Didn't like reading that Mikes iStick50 is now acting up too - 2 out of 3 is not good. Even though the vendor here in Canada that I ordered my iStick30 from is listing the iStick50 as having an upgraded circuit board - I was reluctant to try one.

I do hope this means that they have identified the problem and upgraded them. However, if they know there is a problem I think they should be recalling them and replacing the faulty one. Has to be bad business to just wait until people have a problem - or even worse a fire.
Congratulations! Now I (kinda) know a real person who actually won something in that contest.

I just knew I was on the main drag and I'd get home if I kept following it. I think I've unwound enough now to sleep.
oh glad you made it home ok, and hope you got some sleep eventually! So very glad you're home!!!

And my 3D printer is on it's way
Awesome!! You'll be the first person I've known to actually have one of these!

WE think they're pretty lil things, too. :)
They're both gorgeous! Meant to say that yesterday, but was a lil preoccupied! hehehe

Now I have to learn to use it.
and you will, as with anything, little bit of a learning curve, but you'll take to it like you have everything else I'm sure!

The question being, could I sell 500 units in a reasonable period of time as a start up .. consider the cost of a Web Site and other ads ..
2 sold.....I'd beg, borrow, steal, or sell a kidney!! lol The one thing I've not seen at all being done is the inlay that you do. Folks would go nuts. If you decide to do this, and whether or not you become a registered or forum supplier, will be glad to help ya any way I can.

Good morning all. Unc Willie, I have a similar knowledge base. Great post.
Hiya Bob! Pretty sure you've been here before, but if not, welcome!!! If so, welcome back!!

Love mine! It's great, glad you got yours and your coffee!
