jup......a snicker's has about 4 grams of protein, and I need 48 grams a day......so I just need to eat 12 snickers a day.....right??!! lol
Protein? Just get some protein powder and make a protein shake using LOTS of Nestles quick or Hershey's syrup. And for health use 2% milk not whole milk ;)

Meet Me in St Louie Louie
During the Spring, the strawberry fields near my area begin to open for self-picking, for a fee, of course .. The Amish and the Mennonites begin to set up road side stands, offering strawberries and large potted mums at a relatively inexpensive price, creating colorful flower oasis on the byways .. although it is becoming more and more rare, you still sometimes will see a horse and buggy ..

I am a self admitted Pound Cake Shortcaker .. I find the round, indented strawberry receptacles sold at the Grocer to be lacking in character and just way to spongy .. they, I feel sure, are a fairly modern invention designed to sell a specific product for use with the berry .. although not having researched Strawberry Lore, I also feel sure in saying the Original Strawberry Shortcake (OSS) was a real cake of sorts ..

The Pound Cake, when properly baked, provides the ideal bed with which to lay the ripest, sweetest berries on .. in my case, I shun the artificial liquids and what not that are commonly used to mash the berries into a pulp with, since I feel this is an injustice to the intent of the berry in general and a travesty to all Good Berries .. thusly, two one inch to one half inch thick slices of Pound Cake Loaf Style, drizzled with some Strawberry syrup, a generous layer of Fresh Ripe Strawberries, taken from the field that day if possible, sliced at least in half, topped by a nice top hat of Cool Whip (the low fat variety, since I don't really taste a big difference) that has been allowed to defrost just enough so that's it's not hard anymore .. thus, creating a free form delicacy ..

I have indulged in actual Strawberry Shortcake as in a full cake, iced with whip cream and layered with whipped cream and strawberries .. and while it is a satisfying selection, I lean toward preferring the much more personal, Individual Strawberry Shortcake (ISS) .. I have also heard of the elusive Strawberry Shortcake Pie, although I have yet to run across one in the Wild .. other variations being the Waffle, the Angel Food Cake hybrid, the Twinkie, the Cheesecake, the Parfait, the Cupcake .. etc

As a side note, I find Cool Whip to be one of the more underappreciated commodities of the Modern World ..

Then drench that in Hershey's Syrup. For your heart :)

I hate to rain on the Hershey Syrup Parade, but I've never cared for it .. if I want Hershey, it must be in Bar Form, ideally with Almonds .. :)

Of course you do. . . you're a sweetie.

I just want to know how you got strawberry short cake out of an air popper...
and why those grapes are crawling into that bottle :)

I'm good. . .

The grapes are stuck in the top of a blue wine bottle (my favorite btw) I put a string of lights in it and use it as a night light in the kitchen.

Sorry, everyone do your neck exercises. bahahahaha

What kind of cake do you use

I normally make a white sheet cake but since I have not been feeling 100% lately, hubby got the pack of 3 pound cakes from Samsclub and I must say. . . it is really better. Will definitely do it again.

I love the Pssshhhht in the can.

You cannot get that can out of the fridge without my little black cat running to you. He loves whipped cream. My hubby started giving him a squirt of it but I didn't find out until I noticed the cat got all excited about it. I love whipped cream. Can't eat Jello with out it.

Ya'll need to try a Twinkie SBSC!

What is SBSC? I have tried to figure it out but my brain is not cooperating.

Well I have to say that all the versions of Strawberry Shortcake that have been discussed would be good - I am not picky and they sure have been making me hungry.

Since my favorite cake is Angle Food - I do have to admit that it is what I normally use when making Strawberry Shortcake. I then slice the strawberries , add sugar and let them sit until they make their own syrup then putting it all together and topping it all with Cool Whip.

I think I might have just found what desert will be on Sunday for Father's Day :)

ETA: oh and Matt you can get Cool Whip in a can to get that pssshhht

Items for emergency sweet tooth relief when nothing better is available:

Buttered toast with syrup or jelly.
Bowl of sweet breakfast cereal.
Canned fruit.

When I find I am facing a sugar jones of some sort, and have limited material on hand ..

I am fairly good at French Toast .. I almost always have bread on hand, eggs, no-fat milk and vanilla .. and I'll note that vanilla seems to last forever, since I have a large bottle that I bought in Mexico in the 1990's that I still use .. if the bread's too fresh, toast it lightly, dip in a mix of a couple eggs / milk and a splash of vanilla and fry it up in butter .. top with powdered sugar or clear Karo syrup, which is the only syrup I keep around ..

As a testament to my ability, it was one of the common requests of all my wives .. (I of course, only had one wife at a time, just to make sure any new folks don't get the wrong impression ;)) .. "Baby, I'd love it if you would make me some of that French Toast .. " .. .. "Certainement mon amour" (he spoke French) :)

I'll add that my Mother, may she rest in Peace please, would fry up some cheap canned refrigerator biscuits, roll them around in sugar and serve them warm .. to this day, I'll still sometimes get a can and fry some up myself .. cheap but very effective ..

Willie you said "he"spoke french referring to an ex wife. please tell me this was a typo! or else Viva La France!

The French is my reply to the question ... the "He spoke French" is an old Steve Martin reference ..

Nope ... don't think I've eaten more the 1/2 a Strawberry in my life ... it's a flavor/taste that doesn't appeal to me. Now turning to milk ....

A favorite lunch sandwich

  • Whole wheat bread - toasted preferred
  • Hebrew National Bologna
  • A few strips of green pepper
  • A handful of potato chips smashed and sprinkled on the meat and green peppers
  • A large glass of very cold milk (*)

An added bonus - desert a tastykake junior

I still have the sandwich frequently - but since I've been on a health kick :)rolleyes:) I rarely have the desert.

(*) I've always been big milk drinker - I still go through about 2 gallons a week even though Janet's been telling me for years - milk isn't really all that good for me anymore. Just can't break a lifetime's habit though.

Now on the topic of strawberry shortcake, I was raised on the original version - a slightly sweet biscuit base, which may or may not include an egg. This is the definition of short cake, same etymology as shortening. Unfortunately, I am allergic to strawberries :-x and after first going to one big splurge per year, and then once a year of just the juice that naturally forms from lightly sugared berries (The only liquid I've ever used on my shortcake) I have finally had to give up completely.

No other fruit really works. Raspberry ought to be good, but the texture is all wrong. The only shortcake that I bother with now is made with good quality frozen peaches. Frozen, before you southerners get upset, works better than the hard sour "fresh" ones that we can get here. I used to kind of like those, but then I spent a summer in Texas and found out what fresh peaches ought to taste like.

So good to hear from you!!! I've been wondering how you're doing. Please keep us updated when you can!

Unfortunately, I saw the doctor Tuesday, and was sentenced to four more weeks of no weight bearing. And then, presumably, to another week or so showing that I can successfully get around with a walker and stick to only partial weight bearing. Grrrr. In the meantime I was promoted to a cam boot, which seems like torture to me. It's much heavier and more restrictive than the cast was. Not a happy camper.
