Me without my upper plate!

Stolen from over in the Tootle Puffers Forum. Thanks for the loan.

Clnire, just sent you a PM let me know and I'll come over, not in there right now.

I saw your post this morning on the Tootler's thread. Welcome! Guess I missed you cuz I went to bed before reading that....

PC lesson for today ...

Sticking more DIMMs into a motherboard won’t change the speed at which the processor executes code, adding RAM simply reduces the need for Windows to rely on “virtual memory”.

There is a negligible improvement in everyday tasks / speed with increased RAM .. everyday tasks being the operative word ..

Intensive photo / video / music editing is the exception to this general rule, and in those cases at least a Haswell class / Intel CPU with 8GB would be preferred ... if you use software that can utilize

DVD / CD drives are so last century .. SD card / USB Thumb Drive is really the preferred way to go .. the small capacity of a DVD disk ... Single-layer discs hold 4.7GB ... where a 32 GB thumbdrive can be had for well under $20 clams, and is much more robust .. many older softwares, that came on CD / DVD won't run properly on WIN 8.1 anyway .. however, if you watch DVD's on PC, a DVD drive would be good to have .. ;)

And, an essential part of any laptop should be an HDMI out jack, so you can output to your TV any content ... Bluetooth is also nice ..

I know it's easy to forget I'm so much more than just a pretty face around here .. ;)

Thank you for the info Willie! I have been out of the loop for so long, I forgot a lot! Yes, for basic, daily work 2 gb is just fine. And all I use now days for backup/transporting data is USB flash/thumb drives. The prices have come down so far they are easily affordble.

That laptop sure looks interesting...

Though one advantage of being practically tone deaf is that I don't really hear much difference in sound systems once they're past the super cheap tinny ones.:D
So long as you don't have to push the volume to its limit. :grr: Of course, I need to get in the habit of turning volume up at the HA level.

I hate that. Then, there are these huge bathrooms in remodeling shows that make me feel chilled just looking at them. Too much space to heat when you're wet and naked.

I actually prefer my tiny bathroom. So convenient to put my feet up on the door jam and do whatever electronics I take with me. The vent is right beside me and I will admit I sometimes have to put on a sweater. bahahahaha

Good to be seen! It's always nice to be reminded that I'm not invisible!

Since my vaping is in such a good place, that is the real reason I come here. Virtual contact will never be better than human, but it is much better than nothing. I celebrated my 32nd wedding anniversary the 30th, and the only congrats I got was from a ecf friend in an email. I will say this is the first time he has totally forgotten even though two weeks ago, I told him the new socks he liked was his anniversary present. Sheesh! You are not ever invisible here. We care and miss you when you are not here.

Went to bed before 12 and woke up at 7. If I didn't know better, I'd say I'm like a normal person. The rain is messing with me and I might have to go home a get some muscle relaxers but other than that. . . life is good.

Ya'll have an awesome day.

Happy Hump Day y'all.

Happy belated anniversary Torey!

I think a lot of us old-timers must have 'our vaping in a good place'. Not much posting on the front porch. I don't think there's been a post in over 24 hrs. I guess that's good for us - but kind of a shame for attracting new folks to the front porch.

OK, got a great PM from Willie and think I'm gonna pull da trigger, so to speak.
Toshiba Satellite C55 B
Just a note, and if you've already purchased, please disregard:
Both of the Toshiba C55 models that CR has evaluated are noted to be especially slow and are not recommended by CR.

I'm definitely thinking of getting one of the refurbed Lenovo Thinkpads from Office Depot (same website).

I know what you really wanted to say. We talked about that one the phone, didn't we? Um, um, um, um, um.

yup! Any man that resembles Wild Bill ( as in Deadliest Catch) gets my full attention!;)

If I were ever in the presence of either ,the song " The Horizon Bop" would be playin loud n clear in my head!

Jup. The Toshiba would be slow but IF all yer gonna do is surf and email, just fine. But anything else... that's why I recommended the other one for $50 more. Twice the ram and I think the AMD chip would out do the intel celeron.

As far as brands... the Lenovo has been king of the hill for years now. (ratings wise) Even tho they (IBM) sold the company to China a few years back, they kept up the quality. Now, if you wanna get hi-end and go with a company you never heard of that builds most of them for everyone... pro-star is where it's at.

When writing, on previous computers, I would get the virtual memory message frequently. This one is powerful in that way, even though multiple other functions are burned out. The problem is when I have large PDF files open for research purposes, and large files on the writing project, as well as wunderground, FB, e-mail, and here, and another tab opened for research purposes.

I keep forgetting whether Haswell class is submarines, destroyers, battleships or aircraft carriers.

Nice find on that laptop, Willie... got me thinking about getting one myself.
I always had trouble staying awake in Haswell's class.

"Ain't 'nuff room fer no dagnab plates. My toophs mesh well just like dey are!"

It used to be that most of my shirts were pull-overs and t-shirts.

When I was young, dumb and phull o' phun, my clothes had to be phorm phitted to my athletic physique. Now, I buy loose clothing to hide my phorm!
That reminds me, I need to donate my two dozen or so, still presentable, Guy Harvey t-shirts to da church clothing drive...

Busy, Busy, Busy...

As the popularity of tablets has expanded - the re-introduction of a larger variety of low end laptops has expanded. The problem with them is the shortcuts they take to make them the lower price - they do more than just take out the DVD and reduce the Ram.

Happy Anniversary, Torey! 32 years, wow!

You should put your anniversary (and a reminder that it's coming a week ahead) wherever he might see it. Maybe his phone or email calendar? Or, a big calendar on the kitchen wall?

Well-- maybe I could start a new subject. Lets see what happens.
That's a good idea! I'll try to pay more attention on the Front Porch for the ECF newbies.
