I tried a torch, and was not happy with it. I don't have enough hands. I heat up that kanthal running it quickly between my fingers to the lighter. Then I give it another run. Seems sufficient without excessive heat on the lighter. Can anyone recommend a cheap, decent butane torch? I've had it with using my old lighter (which gets hot). I want cheap. But, I want it to work reliably and safely also.
It's about 2" wide and 3 1/4" tall. But, since it fits a kayfun in the side compartment, it doesn't also have a big thing sticking out on top of the 3 1/4"!That is a pretty blue! That looks tiny!
Do we not need to get it to glow red?I tried a torch, and was not happy with it. I don't have enough hands. I heat up that kanthal running it quickly between my fingers to the lighter. Then I give it another run. Seems sufficient without excessive heat on the lighter.
you know I don't even do that since I started with the coil winder. Just don't seem to need to. But then I use 28 or 30 gauge kanthalDo we not need to get it to glow red?
If you were to do it in the dark, you would see a bit of a glow. It doesn't really need that much.Do we not need to get it to glow red?
I seem to get more reliable results with a quick torch. On 30g.you know I don't even do that since I started with the coil winder. Just don't seem to need to. But then I use 28 or 30 gauge kanthal

Maybe I don't need one, I guess. It's working so far. Plus, maybe I torch a little more than necessary. If you were to do it in the dark, you would see a bit of a glow. It doesn't really need that much.

ok on the coil winder I had the same problem then I figured out that the free end of the wire has to catch in that little nub on the bottom of the part you turn. Once I got that worked out I got perfect coils every time. Unless it catches you will get overlapped wraps.Maybe I don't need one, I guess. It's working so far. I haven't been able to wrap a satisfactory coil on my coil winder thingy yet. I've tried a few. But, they come out overlapped and a mess. So, I'm wrapping on a small screwdriver for the time being.
I've started using this technique. Works perfectly everytime! @Rotowoman should try this when she gets started, too. Anyone with hand issues can wrap a coil on any coiler with this.Maybe I don't need one, I guess. It's working so far. Plus, maybe I torch a little more than necessary.

I'll give it another try. But, I think I was already trying it that way. But, we'll see. Maybe a little more persistence will pay off.ok on the coil winder I had the same problem then I figured out that the free end of the wire has to catch in that little nub on the bottom of the part you turn. After all this time, I still haven't gotten around to buying a machine screw!I had one, but couldn't get it to work right. PIF'd it. Now I wrap on a machine screw. Very consistent, especially since I resumed a light torching.
No idea about the connection, but I had issues with one I changed the post on. Had to hold the deck in place with clampy plier thingie & get the whole thing put back together, positive block in the right place, & the airhole holes lined up right with the holes in the post. Hint: use a long needle to line up the holes .I don't know who had mentioned it. I'm pretty sure it was someone here on the Front Porch. Anyway, I decided to build coils on all my Kayfuns at once so they'll be ready to use at any time. I just put a little piece of masking tape on each with the resistance it came out to.
Luckily the one that I'm having trouble with was the last one in the bunch. Otherwise, I probably would have gotten discouraged and given up before I really started.
Here they are (all that are clean, not in use, and not having trouble with at the moment):

Now, the problem I'm having with my misbehaving Kayfun. The 510 screw wasn't connecting. But, when I unscrew it just a tad to make the connection, the positive block loosens and causes a short. I thought maybe I could hold it down tight so that the screw would just come down into the block a little rather than loosening it. But, not happening that way. Any ideas?

Thank you, David. I'll give it a try. Wish me luck!Got any carto sleeves? Slice the end off, and carefully slice an X in the middle. Push the (removed) 510 screw through the X and trim it as flush as you can - first the X flaps, then around the screw head. You've just made an insulating washer to space the screw head out and still let you tighten it up.
Or maybe just a turn or two of dental floss (unflavored!) where the washer would go.
Yep. It's going to be hard to screw it far enough in to line up the holes & connect to the positive post but you can do it. I turned it on it.s side withe the airhole facing up. Got the post started, d when it got hrd to turn I made sure the + block was in the right position, turned it back on it's side & dropped a long fat needle, (like for needlepoint), into the airhole. When the holes lined up the needle dropped into the matching hole in the post. In the case of a couple of my dual airflow KF's I could tell the airflow wasn't right because when I held it toward a light & looked thru the airhole the light looked oval instead of round like the airhole. My other KF's the light looked round, not oval. Grabbed the clampy plier thingies, needle & screwdriver & turned the post until the needle went all the way thru & fell out of yhe opposite airhole. Held it up to the light again & the light looked round like the airhole. On a single airflow you just have the wiggle the needle around to see if it seems open all the way.So, maybe I should pull the screw all the way out then put it together again with some kind of clamp.
Yes. I'm gonna have to grab me a paperclip and give it a try. It would be so cool for it to be that easy. I'll let you know.DH, did you watch the video?
We could have left today but, not in the Thanksgiving rush for sure. Leaving tomorrow morning if I can. As you can see it's 1:38 in the morning. I don't know if I'm going to sleep or not. Right now it doesn't look like it. I can't drive 14 hours with no sleep beforehand. Anyway the traffic tomorrow should be almost non existent. That is quite cool. I'm looking forward to having a mod that allows the setting of all those parameters.
Oh, no! Not THEY again! They are so difficult to dispute.
Gary already mentioned it, but you're really gonna regret not having a kitchen sink.
I'm glad you're headed south instead of north tomorrow. There is nothing more ridiculous, in my opinion, than the I-95 traffic between DC and Boston, no matter what day or night one is traveling.
