OK, fresh build. Damn it all tho I got no pics...

I decided to be adventuresome and try a vertibraid. after 3 tries I finally got it, and it's pretty damn good if I do say so! I used 32ga kanthal(which explains the HUGE PITA), wicked with rayon on the trusty ol' serpent :D

Ok here is my first attempt with rayon on the Griffin. Boy it's a huge learning curve! It flooded out of one air hole. Never happened with cotton. But I pulled one of the wicks & retried.
It's great now.
Here are the steps as I remembered them.
1) stretch & pull out the rayon. Measured out 3 coil widths of rayon.
2) feed thru coil until you hear a squeak.
3) you need more rayon in the coil than cotton
4) angle cut the tails
5) tails should be thinned out, to less than you think you need
6) on mod, pressing power button, blow gently into the drip tip.
Please feel free to tell me where I need help. Thanks everyone!

Step 6 is optional, as stated this can cause an issue on some atties if you blow too hard, or if the pressure hasn't stabilized in the tank it can make it burp, and possibly push out a short tail.

Looking pretty decent so far. Try it out, if you have any problems inspect the deck. If it works good enough go with it for a while.

Looks like the one tail may be a little short and that probably caused it to flood the first time.

You could probably go thinner from the hole to the coil if needed next time.. Another 45 cut on the upper part. Depends, you may be just fine where you've got it.

Here's to a great first wick. I think you've got a keeper. Great job!

thanks for your critique, do you mean my picture #5? I accidentally added the first pic twice, at the beginning & the end. Do you mean another 45 degree cut from the bottom of the wick hole to the coil?

It looks good, it will take some ironing out and refining.you could have used more in the ends to angle down.

Thanks! I was trying to follow your pics. Do you mean make the ends longer then angle?
More like cut at a deeper angle, I usually make them slightly longer then do a less steep cut, easier to form so it's bigger right above the juice channels

What you have there may work just fine for you. I see no major problems so far. Looks very good for a first try. Refinement can always come in the future. The main thing at first is just getting enough density in the coils and some cut on the tails.

Tails longer than cut yes or no.. Either way as long as 50-80% of the tails have been cut out. Doesn't matter how you form it really, just a nice cascading waterfall look is typically great.

This may just be confusing.. Every atty can use a different specific cut. There are many ways to achieve the end goal.

So when you start the leading edge of the cut be long enough to reach the base of the wells. then cut an angle all the way up the wick to within a few mm away from the coil, specific mm depending.. Thats how I like to do it, depends if it will give the correct amount t for the juice holes it may..

Or you do a 45 at the length you want, then another cut after its pulled down to thin the Bush above, like I believe Hiramkunz did, I regularly just did straight cuts with the tail dropping.

You'll need a certain amount of tail in the juice holes to keep the juice in check. And that's about all the thickness you need going up to within a few mm, or 5, out from the coil

Thank you everyone for all your help! I think I understand better now. I'll try again tomorrow on the Crius. Will update. I appreciate all the help!

That coil was gigantic, tried it but just not my style took a few warm up hits to get good vapor.

Currently a 2.5mm kanthal coil. It's only my second build on it, first was 3mm. Running 94%vg. Have only cut the tails off flush so far and it's kept up. May Tweek more next wick.

The size also seems to slightly restrict the flow, I am going to throw in a 2.5 and see if it's better.

Yeah it's not fun, especially with 32ga ;). I was saving the 32 for claptons, but my drill decided to go to "jump school" and now I'm waiting to get another on payday. Got bored and looked up how to do it, the rest is history :D

I would have to get a vise.
