Thinning isn't really necessary with this wick, but to allow more juice flow from the tank... I just wicked it and cut flush... Trim some out if needed, with 100vg I may take a slice off the side of the wick to open the flow in the channel a little more for me when it's cooler outside..
Next time I recoil I'm going to try moving the coil up higher again, and plan on a partial angle cut to drape the wick down to the channels and keep it away from the top cap and possibly reducing air flow.
