On the topic of TC, I keep coming across hits and misses - and sometimes it will work for a while and then I'll gradually need to increase the power (and no, the coil wasn't gunking).

This is with all types of TC wire that I've used: ni-200, 304 SS, 316L SS, and Ti. It doesn't seem to mater whether the coils are contact or spaced. Some mods are worse than others though - like the smok Xcube II & Xcube Mini, and from it's offshoot company the Koopor Mini (which hasn't done tc AT ALL - not even once).

There's one mod now where the tc is supposed to be superb - the VOOPOO Drag.. Which is probably the mod I'll go for next. I've normally been a huge fan of TC, but lately I'm just starting to go back to watt mode.. Not to mention that several mods will just jump out of TC into watt mode on their own, anyways.
So I've even ended up using ni-200 in watt mode because of that - I'm just far more careful to avoid dry hits with that wire type (I put super-tiny removable stickers on the mods/attys to indicate current wire type). Though on the mods that do TC somewhat sort-of fairly well, I've found that Ni-200 28-guage has been the most consistent, even over thinner ni-200 guages.

On that note, I'll never buy another KangerTech MOD ever again! My Kbox-200 & Kbox-Mini (topbox), both bought within a few months of each other, have bitten the dust in less than two weeks of each other. After they were only just about a year old or so. The Kbox-200 was iffy to start since I needed to return, under FT warranty, the 1st one after 2 weeks. ...... So Kanger mods, BAAAD - Kanger atty's - GOOOOD.

==============

BTW, I most often do vape at around 14-30 watts - so that might go toward explaining my findings on wick tightness and tail trimming. :) But overall, I think overemphasizing those two aspects might turn people off to the mere thought of trying Rayon to begin with - thinking they need a PhD to use it. I would think it's just that people like Jeremy and others may have found that it could simply be most optimal to do that.

they all do terrible tc from what I have read

VOOPOOO Drag
just picked up a black resin version locally for the price of the non resin version online (I think they priced the resin for the non resin price) and so far so good after an hour, no complaints. It is as good as my revenant and g2's. It does have a 80w max in tc mode (cartel has 60w max) but it fires fast and gives a great tc vape on 316ss

I vape much higher wattage and lower ohm than you do

No I disbanded temp Control a long time ago, so just want good battery life and power. I did read the tc was bad. Really just want a good look, power and life.

And something that isn't going to crap out on me.. unfortunately I don't care for a lot of these gaudy mods, or the huge bricks.

Now is the time I wish I had a MECH ! :)
Oceanus should be solid, I'm planning to pick one up myself.

For batteries, if you like relatively lower power levels, the Sanyo 20700b is excellent. I vape in the 25 - 35w zone, great runtime.

If you're interested in a 20700 mech squonker, check the Vandy Vape pulse bf mod. It's supposed to ship mid October, looks like a solid design, good price point. Alternately the yiloong predator mechanical is a $35 3d printed mech squonker, trivial to set for 20700 ( slightly spread the battery contacts, change to a slightly smaller bottle like the yftk 8.5ml soft square bottle). The yiloong lacks an off switch, but I've been really loving it with a pulse 24 rda, single coil. The yiloong looks are simple, utilitarian, but I have no problem using it in an office environment.

Yep, that would certainly be my experience. :)
Even when it might work somewhat, I've never usually gone above ~220F IIRC (a couple times ~310F or so before scorch-city). At that real temp, it shouldn't even be producing much/any vapor at all.

I wish they'd come just as SS.. At least FT doesn't show a version. My experience with various 'coatings/resins' have been that they wear off.
Interesting that you say max of 80w in tc -- I didn't see any other versions of the Drag at FT than this '157' watt.
Not that it matters much for me anyways, though -- even with something like 'preheat', I usually set it to ~45-70w to hopefully increase battery longevity.

Wattage, yes - but ohms, probably not. :) My ohms usually end up around .05 - .50 or so (but I don't build with ohms in mind, except to make sure it's within range on the mods). But I only think ohms matter with unregulated/mechs. With regulated tc/watt mods, I haven't noticed any difference between any resistances. (I'm a thoroughly regulated vaper -- I'd NEVER get a mech/unregulated anymore. :nah: )

search some yt/reviews etc, in TC mode max wattage/preheat is 80w

I have vaped sub 0.10 but lately I have switched to 0.15 - 0.30 ohms and generally set my watts at 75w - 100w for those builds. Trying to build more for better battery life and so that if I switch to the cartel revenant or voopoo drag it won't have a hard time with ramp up.

not sure how you can vape so low ohm with such a low watt setting

Hello All. What is the best way to clean a coil without removing the rayon?
Wick it with Silica or Ceramic wick? I find it pretty quick and easy to just dryburn and rewick. Others here have mentioned brushing and rinsing but I don't feel comfortable I'd get all the little cruddy bits rinsed out of the wick and possibly inhale them

I'm trying to rewick as little as possible. I saw posts in this thread where people were getting well over 100mls of liquid before rewicking.

In an emergency when out and about, I have gently scraped the char off of a coil with a pocket knife. Then using the edge of a folded up piece of wet paper towel, rubbed the coil to get the bits off.

Close the tank up and carry on...

Did you remove the coil or did you just clean the top of it? I'd hate to rewick when the rayon looks nice and white and the flavor is still good.

Sitting down, facing forward.
Keep in mind that coil life is highly dependent on the liquid being used. NETs and sweet flavors will kill a coil very quickly. I routinely go over 100ml with my builds but I don't vape NETs or sweet favors at all. When I do rebuild I put in a coil and wick. Wire is cheap and it only takes a minute to wind a coil.

I found that out the hard way with NETs :( I didn't know anything about NETs. I thought something was wrong with my build at first.

Wick it with Silica or Ceramic wick?

Other than wiping off the top & side(s) (with a knife, paper, paper towel, vape rag, etc), this would be the only way.

To use up a stockpiled 130ft of 2mm FastTech silica, I've gone through the process of figuring out how best (for me) to rewick with silica.. For when off-flavor starts from repeated dry-burnings.
  • 2mm diameter coils will fit 2 strands - 1 strand doubled-over using a loop of wire to thread it through.. AKA, threading-the-needle technique.
  • 3mm diameter coils will fit 4 strands - 2 strands doubled-over.

If you're simply wanting to re-use fine-looking rayon, you could always try to rinse and dry it out - see if you can re-use it. I've never done it though.

Of course the best thing to do is to use up your gunking juices and don't buy any more. If you make your own, either don't use sucralose or ethyl maltol, or use very little (generally .5% of a 10% solution - maybe 1% tops).

You have a choice to make, pull the wick, dry burn and rewick or toss the whole thing and rebuild complete. To my knowledge there is no magic way to clean a coil with the wick in place and make it look, work, taste like a new one.

30mls/day (even more on weekends),, i rewick on sundays,,,the coil is a little crusty and the rayon is light brown,, i get the ugly coil and dark brown / black rayon with certain flavors or overstuffed wick. if it matters, my nic is 0 to 3mg.
