@Dr. Seuss you have a year at minimum, find a couple devices that tick the most boxes for you and start watching for sales to pick up one or two more at a time. Try to to find users that have the device to see about reliability over time. The average board should give you at least 3-4 years of service though I suspect many will last much longer. PWM mods are easily repaired so maybe invest in a couple cheap ones for backups. Dovpo and Telsa have some good reasonably priced PWMs and can often be found on clearance.

That just gave me a random thought. So say they do pass a law that everything is banned, and give a deadline, do you think that will drive prices up or drive them down? Do you think the view would be everything just got “rare” so prices would get jacked up or do you think the view would be that they have to unload everything they can before the deadline?

I sure am spending saving a lot of money based on all the various recommendations I see here!

Yup the more you spend, the more you save. Heh. It doesn't exactly work that way but well, IDK with enough mental gymnastics I can see it.

How long does Sourcemore take with the cheapest shipping option (about). Just curious it was my first order from them (possibly not my last.....) But yeh.

Here’s where I got it, and I’m glad I jumped on it when I did as it’s now sold out. But I highly recommend this site and they do have other awesome shinies.

MDX Mod

Damn it. Favorited. This means I will never find it again though. My favorites bar is the LAST place I ever look for anything....

I picked up some Hohm Life batteries from the vape shop in a pinch and they have nice thick wraps, they feel really durable. I was thinking if I could find some like that I’d rewrap my Sonys. Those Sonys are pretty thin.

As mods go so far I get good feels about Vaporesso, I have one going on two years without a hitch. The Drones seem to have a pretty good reputation. The mechs have crossed my mind for the simple fact that like you said they’re about as bare bones as it gets and could rather easily be repaired (plus I’ve seen some really nice ones around) but I just don’t sit well with the thought that I’ll not make some sort of mistake. I get ohms law, physical safety etc, but there’s still some doubt in there. It may be worthwhile grabbing one just to stash it so the option is at least there should things change down the road.

I need to find the VW bug of regulated mods, that one that just lasts forever.
I have not ventured into the new drones. Had the original that the button quit on, poor design. Probably fixed on the new but i fell in love with topsides.
I would recommend to look at the topside. I have 3 single a dual and a carbon. No issues with any. I even dropped one so that it bent in where the bottle opening is. Couldnt get the sled out, bent it back and still works great.
I dont use temp control so the dovpo chip is great for general use. Many get the dna devices for temp control. there is a school of thought that if you dont use temp its a high cost for vw.
Just figured id mention this as i have not bought any squonks since the topsides. Not saying i wont but it ticks all the boxes for me. Single topside is best for single coil or maybe the profile. Topside dual for your beefy dual coils. They do have the carbon (limited production they say) that is a yihi chip and has good temp. All have a 10ml topfill bottle so they are simple.

Oh and they do have bypass on the single, so almost mech.

Anyway my :2c:
Good luck on the search.

The shiny thread has evolved.

Yep. Into something like, IDK that creature from Aliens. Only prettier, probably better smelling, and less goo.

I'm not going to say harder to kill. Because I am ashamed to say I have killed some mods in my time. LOL.

Anna

The THEAD is probably harder to kill. LOL. I'm going to demand to write the intro post on part 2 and like... It will be far more realistic. Like: "Abandon all hope all ye who enter here... Debtor's prison awaits."

Yep Vaporesso is definitely one of the good manufactures.....I have a polar and it's been going strong for a year and a few months. To be honest though i've always had mods that lasted and worked without problems....from early Innokin's, Sigelei through to expensive stuff like the billet box. I haven't used a mod to the point it breaks before getting another one so experience for me above a couple of years is limited.

Back-up of the back-up's back-up is the way i've gone so I have lot's of options :)

Regarding mech's as long as you know your ohm's law to build for your battery and always pre-check your build on a regulated mod you'll be fine....and always take your battery out when not using it. You could always choose a mech which has a disc style Mosfet inside...then you're protected....

Good luck.

I was born in the city and moved to the country when I was 8.

I was thrilled with all the critters. Cows! Goats! Horses! Groundhogs!

Until the first time I saw an opossum. I thought it was the biggest rat ever. Screamed blue bloody murder.

Funny you should mention possums. Had this happen yesterday.

Yeah, I'm looking at quality mechs for the long term. All my regulated mods, some of which date back 4 years right now, still work fine, but I'd rather stock up on stuff I know won't fail and I can easily fix any issues myself. But that depends on your current balance of mods. If you have lots of regulated mods then some mechs if you're comfortable working with them and spending time to learn and practice proper safety are worth adding to the selection. If you're only using a few regulated mods, you might want to pick up a mix of inexpensive on sale stuff, midrange, and a few higher end mods for the future.

Don't forget rdas. Those will be affected too (as will rtas). Extras of your favorites are a good idea along with replacement parts like grub screws and o rings, although I can't see that being as much of an issue to get should you need them. It'll just be a matter of figuring out the sizes to order.

Really need to remove batt from mech when not using?

Personally, I am more inclined to remove batteries from mods with a board/chip/mosfet when not in use than a mech. It is mods with boards/chips/mosfets than can malfunction and autofire out of the blue while just sitting on a shelf or table. That's not generally a mech issue.

However, mechs without a proper physical locking mechanism should have the batteries removed when being transported in a bag/pocket/etc.

Yes definitely IMO. The sheer amount of times I have had a coil short develop in an atty after it had been working fine for days :( And then there's only the switch between you and thermal runaway....

It's good practice :)

Depends on the mech. No reason it should ever autofire unless the button is depressed. Still I tend to remove the batteries from my mech squonks at the end of the day for recharging so it's not something I really think about. I don't use tube mechs as I don't drip, and I'm not crazy about the form factor, but that's purely a personal preference. A well cared for, well built tube mech that has sufficient vent holes around the positive end of the battery should be relatively safe.

The advantage on mech squonks is the relatively large hole already present to squonk with, and the panels are not locked in place, so they will fly right off if a battery ever vents. Still not pretty, but no build up of gas pressure within the mod to turn it into a pipe bomb.

I’m sure I’ve said this a thousand times, but that’s one of the reasons I started with Lunas. They’re protected, so it’s sort of like learning how to use a mech with training wheels. I’m easing in slowly, not because I want to give up regulated mods, but because if the time comes when I can’t get regulated, and all of mine eventually fail, I’ll know how to use a mech. And I believe there will always be somebody out there making them, unless a better idea comes along.
I just think, like building and DIY, it’s a good life skill.
