Baditude's blog is a fantastic read for mechs and safety. It's a valuable resource, as is Baditude himself. If you're having questions about what is safe, what is marginal, and how to figure it out though, I'd say check out that blog. He's really good at explaining mech stuff in a way that makes sense and "sticks."
Since I own a mech, and will vape it someday, I follow a lot of the mech threads, and I've learned a lot doing so, (what to do, and what not to do) and I'm really glad I have. I'm not great at explaining things, but I do understand them. You may also want to check out some of the more interesting threads in the mechanical forum, there is a lot of useful information there.
I'm glad I approached it from that direction (to learn what I can before attempting to put it into practice) and I imagine when I get up and vaping it, it will be fun and probably a lot safer than if I jumped in at the deep end.
My main issue with mechs is going to be consistency and I doubt that I'll ever bring one out of the house, but who knows.
