Try DIY
@jfcooley, it's really fun. People will have different opinions on starter kits, I didn't start out with one, I get syringes for free at Walmart, and I still had a few graduated cylinders laying around. If you have a decent scale, mixing by weight can be pretty easy and cut down on supplies and it's speedy.
With that said, if a kit looks like a good place to start to you, some folks have found having everything they need to hand useful.
If you are unsure on flavors, you could pick out just a few, and start there, or a sample flavoring pack. I'd probably go with flavors that seem similar to juices you like.
Or if you want to go slower on DIY mixes, I went to the DIY board and read a LOT of recipes, and the vape store to taste juices, and started with SINGLE flavor mixes that I would mix in my tank, to get a sense of what goes with what. After doing that, I was able to get a handle on flavors and am up to 3 or 4 ingredients/additive mixes (excluding flavor, where I'm a reluctant sweetener, in most of my mixes I'll use a few drops of FA Supersweet, which is sucralose. I get way less coil gunking, and I am now pretty confident in writing my own recipes which is also how I learned to cook.
Cloning a recipe you like and seeing how it turns out can be a good place to start, too.
But, if you want to go for it, I found many of the pinned threads to be super helpful in the DIY eliquid forum, and everyone is friendly and willing to help out.
I'm glad I started early in vaping, after getting my nic stash purchased and a fair number of flavors, I am saving so much money
Good luck with what you decide.
