Yeah those printers were noisy as hell. I remember my first personal laser printer for home was an HP Laserjet 3. All metal in those days and weighed a ton. Cost a ton too. But printed so fast and the quality was so nice it was worth every penny. Now everything is all plastic, cheap, and print better and usually faster for a tenth the price. Even with the cost of toners or inks. But those dot matrix things were a nightmare to work with.

    Morning shinies :)

I'm a Linux geek too - back in the olden days, it was so much faster running x-windows instead of win95.

Another geeky question - every time I open a new spool of geekvape wire (28 gauge), I always lose the lil end bit - which causes it to unravel, and me to swear

Tried holding the end with tweezers, but I still lose it. What's the trick to unwind a spool? ;)

Depending on the spool, I'll take a rubber band and wrap it around the spool then loop it around the free end of the wire. Keeps it from going haywire (lul) as you pull the wire through the rubber band loop.

    Like so...

Thank goodness for the passing of the tractor feed. Anyone remember the matrix printer paper with the tear off perforations so the paper would not look as if it emerged from a DM? If you spaced the sprockets just a mm out, the paper would bunch up, concertina under the print head and ruin your day (and your print job if it wasn't spooled up).

Some would say it still is, but that would be really cruel . I'll admit it, I'm really still a CLI kinda guy. I used to have the mick mercilessly taken out of me, I could assemble the most arcane commands imaginable in a Unix shell, but faced with a GUI I'd be like a rabbit in a pair of headlights.

Good idea. I checked through the parts and it came with a squonk pin, so I tried that. No dice, the tank is stripped too. Oh well. I got the berserker and the intake wicked and juiced and I’m good to go.
Shame, comments about the Solomon 2 were pretty positive overall. Only reason I haven’t ordered one is the gold plating shows.

The definition of a faster OS needs to be defined. Software can be written to take advantage of certain features within an OS and hardware drivers can be optimized. This could give one OS a clear advantage over another when benchmarking the same applications.

As for security – there is no such thing as a 100% secure system….all have vulnerabilities. The key is how quickly are these vulnerabilities addresses and what damage was caused if they were exploited.

I didn’t love the gold, but it would’ve worked with the Thor. I’m not going to write the whole company off, or even just this tank, because it might’ve been just a fluke. Duds happen. And it vaped nice while it vaped.

I just want to thank you, this is the first post I've understood in the last several pages.

To us it's Buenos Aires winter cold. It might not snow, but to us it's cold.
It's very funny hearing the inmigrant Venezuelans complaining about the weather here... Now in summer they're in their turf, but in winter you'll see them in layers of clothing...
I want 20c year round. Maybe Brazil...

Good morning shiners! A busy tech night I see here. I'll catch up later but I think the malware advice column has been more than comprehensive so nothing for me to add.

That's all newfangled stuff. Let's go back to the punch card FORTRAN days. That was a fun time. Loved the waiting in line to hand in my card stacks to be run whenever my time came up, then sitting and waiting for the printouts of the inevitable errors, then figure what was in which card stack I needed to rework.
Don't remind me. 200 bucks for the box of cards. My father was very supportive but that was way too much.

And the absolute worst event, you drop your box and the cards scatter. No matter how careful you were, that dark fear was in the back of your mind.

I always had dozens of rubber bands in my pockets just to keep everything as secure possible. Worse to this day than babying any mod or tank against an accidental fall.

You'd think so wouldn't you? I ran Malware bits and then turned off and back on. We shall see.

there's a reason why i don't really post on the rest of the forum. it's all right here.

And if you think there are weird people in here, you should just see what's out there in other threads. It's enough to make you run home screaming "mommy!!".

Per Wikipedia, "average temperatures [in Brazil] below the Tropic of Capricorn are mild, ranging from 13°C (55°F) to 22°C (72°F)." That doesn't sound too bad, although I'd prefer a lower low, say, 35-40°F (I'm getting soft--I used to like things much colder). I wouldn't want to live someplace with no seasons. I'm unstuck in time often enough as it is.
