I can relate. One of the reasons my friends will tell me to "have a smoke" is that I get wound up, grippy, fidgety. I can't stand it. I don't have a solution either. But it's obviously not just the nicotine since that's been replaced and probably why patches, etc didn't work.

I've heard about MAOI's in cigs and got a chance to ask a pysch dr about those. He said it was highly unlikely since It's rendered ineffective with most foods, which is why they aren't used very much anymore. Many of the additives in cigs are still unknown. Typically blood pressure drops, but that doesn't cause the same effect. So idk what it is other than not fun. There are times a pin drop will have me climbing walls. Ugh.

I am 110% convinced that some people experience withdrawls to more than just nicotine and that's just as challenging, if not more so.

After spending most of my day outside, doing yard work after work, burning a fire in the fire pit this evening I'm really thinking it's cabin fever I've got. I love being outside, regardless of the weather, and between not smoking and basically working in a cave I think that's what's up. I really do feel much less irritable since getting a few hours of fresh air. I'm going to break out my bicycle and get a few miles in tomorrow and see if that helps also.

So I guess its time to get my story out there. Hi I am Darksparkle13 and I am an addict.
I have always had an addictive personality, I craft all sorts of things, am artistic and tinker with stuff just like my dad. Take stuff apart to see how it works and then put it back together.

I have been a full time smoker since I was 12. both my parents smoked, although my sister doesn't smoke weird I know. But glad she didn't!
I have gotten thru addictions of many sorts. But Smoking is that one thing I just cant seem to give up. not sure if it is the thing that makes me remember my dad?
My dad passed away June 29, 2010 and he was my best friend. I miss him every damn day and him and I used to chill on the porch chatting and smoking. My Dad and I talked about everything! Even when he was diagnosed with emphysema & COPD. He still smoked. I saw what he & His body went thru and I made a promise to myself that I would quit before the big 40. He had his first heart attack at 40.
I saw him on a respirator and oxygen & still we sat on the porch and chatted and smoked....
My mom quit smoking after his second heart attack... and of course got mad when we smoked (which btw only made us want to smoke more).... and i Hear all the time smoking bad for you, you have been smoking to long, you know that same ole story....

I have tried almost everything to quit. Meds ( not chantix I am bi-polar that would mess me up seriously LOL) hypno, patches, gums, lollipops, even the blu e-cig when it first came out. and I have always gone back to my old friend cigarettes. so now jump to the present.
I finally gave vaping another try in dec, got my first "starter" kit and really like it, I love the flavors, the options, the ways to decorate and explore, but damn if my old friend doesn't call to me. same as I have seen all of you mention, first thing in the morning, with a great cup of coffee, after I eat, when I am bored or watching tv or movies. I am working on changing all of those habits. I am not smoking store bought cigs, I smoke natural tobacco, packed myself. I have cut my smoking down to about half or more some days. but i still smoke. I am still searching and finding new flavors ( i am a flavor ....) and devices.

So that is my story and just trying the best I know how to stop smoking cigs.
THanks for all the support so far and I look forward to jumping in with my opinions, suggestions and complaints!
I hope everyone has a super wonderful weekend no matter where you are!

Welcome to the area for the rest of us.
I see all these commercials on tv about how smoking is bad, does this or that and THE ONLY 1 that is true to everyone is cigarettes are bullies. At some point you'll kick the snot out of that bully and every time it pokes its punkass back into the picture you'll kick it again

When I was potty training my son we had an 'occasion!' We were playing cards with my in-laws and my son came scampering out of the bathroom telling all of us we had to 'go see.' So, of course we all got up from the table and son leads us to the toilet and points at a perfect little poopy. With the biggest grin on his face. So there are 4 adults telling him that that was one of the nicest poopies we had ever seen and what a good job he did. Never will forget that.

hmm. child went quiet a little bit ago. found him sitting INSIDE the toilet with his diaper on.. good idea to use toilet by himself to show daddy for far he is into potty training, but poor execution LOL! will post a picture later once i get it uploaded.

I'd forgotten I took my youngest kite flying after school today and yesterday. This photo is yesterday in front of my house with my Angry Birds kite. Today was flying her Disney Princess box kite in the field behind her school and I didn't even think about the camera, was having too much fun just being a dad to a great 6 year old

anyone steals the picture and im having it taken down, forcefully if needed.

I hope I didn't offend you. I thought he was cute and very imaginative. I was actually thinking you could add a few words and send off to grandparents, etc. Maybe someday his partner would luv it (don't all parents drag out old naked baby photos?). The thought of using someone else's photo never crossed my mind. It just wouldn't be the same.

Well, you know ME.
Anyone else?

aikanae,

Does that mean you AREN'T interested in DIY or you are heavily into DIY?

I've been trying to figure out the best way to make you a Mint Chocolate Chip Ice-cream liquid from what I have (including the very generous gift from JJ!!!). JJ, please feel free to chime in with any advice, I'm really sweating the pressure here!

The "Chocolate Mint" actually isn't bad by itself; the mint part seems to be at a very good level. The chocolate is a little "weak and dusty"; I think it wants to be a little sweeter or creamier? I keep going around in circles thinking of EM, vanillin, saline, mixing in a little Double Dutch, Candy Cane, yellow cake, or even Gummi Bear.

I also have a number of the MBV creams; whipped cream, sweet cream, bavarian cream (these are e-liquids, not flavorings, but might still be good enhancers). The creams probably contain either diacetyl or one of the other substitutes, though.

Being a little ADD (or perhaps just certifiably insane) I also have been considering MSG-based saline (I do have to try that out for myself, but I don't think that's going to go into any of these batches) as well as looking at all my e-liquids trying to figure out which flavors might complement.

Maybe I'll just mix up a whole bunch of different ones and see what works? (Some will definitely need to steep...)

Just as an FYI:

AH - The first time I tried to quit using the patches - I had a number of freinds offer to buy "Me" cigarettes for 6 months if I would just start smoking again . . . Talk about MOOD Swings . . . I WAS NOT A NICE PERSON (still not) . . .

YEP - Once again "You" are correct in your statement "withdrawal" is more then just nicotine and very challenging to many people . . . However, I disagree with the "pysch dr" you spoke with about the effects of MOAI's in cigarette smoke that are supposedly ineffective . . .

AND - While there are many different studies available and still more to be done . . . Just one report the "Brain monoamine oxidase A inhibition in cigarette smokers" (1996) which can be found at the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health ( Brain monoamine oxidase A inhibition in cigarettesmokers ) would say differently:

"In conclusion, we report here the first direct observation in the human brain that tobacco smoke exposure is associated with a reduction in MAO A. Since MAO A breaks down monoamines linked to mood, this study suggests that MAO A inhibition needs to be considered as a link between tobacco smoke exposure and depression. It also provides support for a recent trial using MAO inhibitor therapy for smoking cessation (41) Even though this study suggests a mechanism by which smoking may provide relief in depressed individuals, the adverse effects of smoking are overwhelming (42). Thus the challenge remains to understand the neurochemical effects of smoke that contribute to smoking behavior and epidemiology and to use this knowledge to develop better therapies for smoking cessation, particular in that subgroup of individuals who consistently relapse."

There is also interesting read from the Journal of Neuroscience "Monoamine Oxidase Inhibition Dramatically Increases the Motivation to Self-Administer Nicotine in Rats" (2005 - Monoamine Oxidase Inhibition Dramatically Increases the Motivation to Self-Administer Nicotine in Rats ) that also discusses MOAI's in Tobacco and the possible effects that might hinder someone from quitting cigarettes easily:

" . . .the present results suggest that, in addition to nicotine, the MAO inhibitory activity of other compounds present in cigarette smoke may combine with nicotine and contribute, at least in part, to the reinforcing properties of tobacco. These findings have implications relevant for understanding the addiction liability of cigarette smoking and may suggest important new avenues for the development of more effective treatments for smoking cessation."

Given these reports and many others - Nicotine is not the only substance causing "Our" ADDICTION to Smoking . . .

AND - Definitely Not "My" Only Addiction . . . Just Sayin' . . . ;)

Oh BTW: MOAI's in Foods - Here is an interesting web site to see and check out too. . .
