UPS= ultimate pummeled packages. Brown beat the brown out of anything they touch.. My recent snus order was NOT notified that it was delivered and had to twist nipples to get it from my apartment manager without a notice.quote]

Ha Ha !!! As I was reading through the thread and came across this I haven't stopped laughing. No matter a persons preference I found this worth moving closer to the end for other johnny come lately's that may not read through it. Funny!!

not sure if that's completely correct - it's kinda of a grey area. It's the only monopoly allowed under US law, and is, according to wiki,
"an "independent establishment of the executive branch of the Government of the United States," (39 U.S.C. § 201) as it is wholly owned by the government and controlled by the Presidential appointees and the Postmaster General."

In general, almost all airmail is contracted to FedX, and the USPS contracts with private subcontractors for home delivery in remote areas of states such as Idaho, Alaska, Wyoming and Montana.

I did find this passage from the wiki definition interesting:
The USPIS has the power to enforce the USPS monopoly by conducting search and seizure raids on entities they suspect of sending non-urgent mail through overnight delivery competitors. For example: according to the American Enterprise Institute, a private conservative think tank, the USPIS raided Equifax offices in 1993 to ascertain if the mail they were sending through Federal Express was truly "extremely urgent." It was found that the mail was not, and Equifax was fined $30,000.[34]

I'm not supporting any USPS boycott. Every bit of e-cig supplies I've bought (from China and domestically) have come via USPS. It's been the most sensible choice for me in every instance for time/cost considerations. And I've been pleased with delivery times.

Yeah, I agree. Everything I've ever ordered made it. Couldn't track it, but it made it.

It isn't a 'kinda grey area'. It's black and white. Here's the tipoff, as you wrote it above:

"it is wholly owned by the government"

The fact that they outsource some of their work to FedEx and UPS is no different than the Air Force outsourcing to Lockheed and Boeing.... or the many other outsourcing the the Federal Gov't does in every department and agency.

And it's not really the only monopoly allowed under US law either but that's another book.

Well that explains it. No, just jerking your chain. It really is in bad financial condition even with the rate hike. I'll bet our tax dollars will be called on to prop it up again.

I had an online business for about 5 years. USPS was sometimes slow but never lost a shipment. I made several thousand shipments too.

We have shipped roughly 21,000 - 22,000 packages total in 16 months .... ALL USPS.

And out of that, we have lost I believe 7 or 8 packages. Only 2 or 3 domestically and 5 international to Canada ... what is that roughly ... About .03% ...

When we were shipping out of Los Angeles, I could almost guarantee 2 day delivery to 98% of the country, with a tracking number that worked 99.9% of the time. Now that we have moved down South, our tracking #'s almost never work, and its normally about 3 days. The South is just a bit slower ... but I would move for the world :) I love it down here :)

We will continue to use USPS which saves time and money in the end for both the Client and Us ...

I worked for UPS...I would personally NEVER recommond them. They train their workers to "build walls" which translates into taking a package and making it fit into a hole, doesn't matter if its too big or not. Then when the wall is almost build, you have to throw boxes behind it to fill any holes between the walls. Ever wonder why your boxes are crumpled or smashed? things are broke? in ups-ense "fragile" is a challege not a caution.

The USPS is created as a government agency under Title 39, Section 101.1 of the United States Code which states, in part:
(a) The United States Postal Service shall be operated as a basic and fundamental service provided to the people by the Government of the United States, authorized by the Constitution, created by Act of Congress, and supported by the people. The Postal Service shall have as its basic function the obligation to provide postal services to bind the Nation together through the personal, educational, literary, and business correspondence of the people. It shall provide prompt, reliable, and efficient services to patrons in all areas and shall render postal services to all communities. The costs of establishing and maintaining the Postal Service shall not be apportioned to impair the overall value of such service to the people.

My only problem with USPS is my supplier sends it priority or something. So any other package can be delivered to my Apartment managers office with her sig.

But the way my supplier sends it which btw is the quickest way from point a to b......it must be signed by me only....so i have to drive to the post office to get it. My post office is in the most congested part of town really a hassle. LOL i'd actually pay him 1 dollar more to send it slower so it can be delivered to my apartment managers signiture :)

Actually, I'll boycott any company that refuses to use USPS or adds a surcharge for sending stuff to me in Alaska just because FedEx and UPS don't have ground service to Alaska. They only ship by air, so we get screwed if we order from lower 48 companies that won't use the postal service.

By the way, USPS is considered quasi-governmental. Their operations are subject to federal oversight and regulation, but they operate financially independently of the federal budget and appropriation process. That's why they have a mandated annual rate review and you see costs for various services, from first class letters to Express Mail, change each spring. They're required to set rates to operate at or above break-even. I think they do an incredible job, considering the complexity and enormity of the mail they move daily through their system. Considering the cheap cost of sending a one-ounce envelope or a flat rate priority box, I'd rate the USPS as a "best buy" service.

Anyone who craps and moans about the time it takes mail to arrive should consider their own failure to plan ahead and their own obsessive need for expedited gratification. It's usually the person who put off ordering something, finally gets around to placing the order, and then screams like a little girl when the item doesn't arrive quickly enough to suit them.

(I just realized I can't even recall what the OP wanted to boycott, but I'm sure he or she will show them who's boss....er... perhaps not...)

I too was a member of the teamsters union when I was 18. Yes, they build a wall with larger boxes (think tetris) and anything small gets thrown on top/behind the wall. I put my foot through more than a couple larger boxes too (as do many on the local sort). Truly, never ship something fragile in a small box via ups. I worked with a crazy kid named bobby who would huff 108 octane race fuel until his eyes popped out of his head - we didn't talk much...

USPS Priority and 1st class service are way different. 1st class goes through way more mechanical sorting and the package gets dropped way more often. Priority mail is actually handled by hand more often than not, meaning the package is very rarely dropped or thrown, but handled by career postal carriers who answer to a postmaster general (who takes complaints VERY seriously). I'd say the government has been losing money on the USPS for many years, thus the steady hike in postage - inflation not withstanding.

I don't know a lot about fedex, but I do know if you ship a huge volume with them they will give you as much as a 70% discount on a shipper account, especially if you threaten to use UPS.

I don't think anyone has a gripe with HKEMS, aside from paying a premium by the gram. And yes tracking is weak across the boards.

Shipping times are about to slow down dramatically for all carriers due to double or triple the volume for the holiday season. At the end of the day each facility can only handle so many boxes per hour. They bring on temporary staff, but only so much is really possible.

The only practice I would frown upon is using a flat rate envelope for ecigs - I don't think anyone does this, and it wouldn't even be a problem 95% of the time.
