Pulsing it is way safer and far more controllable than a torch, stove top lighter (lighters leave lots of carbon, too). Just watch the color and never go beyond blue.
For me it's a choice of electricity, butane torch, Bic lighter, or my gas stove. Stove sounds like a dumb idea considering the other options. Torch gets too hot. Bic leaves carbon. Soooooooo electricity it is!

Ok, I get all that, but is it possible to get it small enough to actually fit an atomizer, without doing the pre-flaming? Because if I try that with kanthal without pre-flaming, then the minute I take my fingers off it, it goes SPROING! and becomes about an inch wide.

Just install a length of wire without coiling it. Pulse it, take it off, and then wrap the coil.

Umm... I'm not really sure how that's possible; the piece of wire is about 6 inches long, that I use when I start to make a coil -- how do you go about attaching something like that?

Just bend it in a large loop, screw it under the atty screws and you're goo to go.

And a brief pulse at a low temp is enough to heat up the whole length of that? Seems unlikely, but I'm an electrical doofus. *shrug*

Sitting down, facing forward.
Yup, a few brief pulses, short "on" time, short "off" time. Be careful, it can burn you 'cause it will get HOT. You'll see a few wisps of smoke from residual oils and the wire will start changing color. You will need to experiment and it will become second nature after a time or two.

Ok, sounds good. Obviously, this will be for the TC mod that I don't have yet -- what would be a good temp for that sort of pulsing?

7 wraps 2 strands medium twisted 26g Ti. I don't know if I will ever go back to ni200. I did dry fire it at 15 watts in order to do a compressed coil. 330°F, 25-30 watts. FLAVA and CLOUDS for days!:w00t:

You don't want the wire to glow too much.

You can

A) pulse it in power mode a few times at really low wattage like 7w while in a dark room. Don't let the wire glow more than a really dark fade red

B) set 600F in temperature mode and pulse it a few times this way.

The end result should be the same. Make sure the wire doesn't get white and dull.

I would even recommend you sacrificing a couple of inches and torch them well or pulse them on a dripper till the piece glows bright and learn how that dull grey surface looks like so you know exactly what to avoid.

If you happen to get annealed Ti that doesn't require a treatment, better for you. Avoid pulsing or dry burning all together.

We only pulse and torch for two main reasons: a) the wire is too springy from the spool and/or b) we want to make contact coils so we need a light oxidation layer to avoid shorts.

Remember, when annealing the wire, gold, blue and purple are your friends. Dull grey or white are not.

You'll be just fine :)

Is the Unkamen annealed or do I need to pulse it?

So want to get your opinion on batteries. I have my choice for just about the same price from RTD who I trust. VTC4, 25R, HE2, HG2 Seems like they are all right around $8 the HE2's are considerably cheaper. They are all 20a except the VTC which is 30a. I have some HE2's and they seem fine. Plus they are only 6 something. The VTC4's are on sale for 7.99 the 5's are 10.99. I get 22000 J out of my HE2's I think the VTC's would be more like my AW's 19000J's

Unkamen didn't need anything for me, no heat or torch and I didn't have any problem. Wrap, wick, vape.

I would say its less springy than kanthal in some ways.. It doesn't like to go touching coil, you'll end up with a spaced coil but that's better anyway.

I only wiped it off with a little alcohol and not much black came off at all either.

I had the same exact experience with my Unkamen titanium 28ga. Wrap, wick, vape.

I may try that first, it would definitely be the easiest way! :thumb:
