yes, the only high retention filtering I perform is the final filtering. Everything up to that point is just plain ordinary coffee filters.

Thanks for all the advise. I think tomorrow I'll be zeroing in this Thai Tea juice. And today the new round of tobaccos came in. More ethanol extractions ahead. :thumb:

Hi is the Thai Tea a powder? How did it turn out. I'm sure it's not the same as drinking it, but is it close?

Not a powder but a brew mixture of black tea and spices. Number One brand is the mix typically used in Thai restaurants to make Thai ice tea. It's simply brewed, with a bit of sweetened condensed milk added when served.

The flavor of the tea mix coming through in the vapor is authentic, though without the added sweet creaminess of the condensed milk. I may use a flavoring later to get that. But for now I'm just relying on the sweetness of the high VG.

I made a NET tea vape for myself and the wife a while back; Celestial Seasonings Moroccan Pomegranate Rooibos. With a tiny touch of FA Vienna cream, it was splendid! :)

My process of choice with heated ethanol has been very simple and favorable for me.

Heat the ethanol to 150 degrees, top the tobacco with the heated solvent and then send it off to a cool dark steep closet for a month.

Twice filter via coffee filter, once via 2.5 micron filter, then freezer/winterize for roughly 4 or 5 days.

After winterization, pour off the crystal clear extract, discard the sludge, air evap the extract by 75%, add an equal of PG to the reduction, filter one last time for good measure via 2.5 micron and we're good to go. Depending on the tobacco, anywhere from 10 to 20% in the mix is sufficient.

Just wrapped up this process with a local blend of Va/Per/Lata and to describe it in three words: sweet, smokey, smooth.

..................Thanks to a question asked by Kbriggs in a different thread I've started another experiment. Two pipe tobaccos (Voodoo Queen and Billy Bud) will be extracted at room temperature for 30+ days. It's been a year or two since I played around with room temperature extractions using ethanol as the solvent and if memory serves me correctly 10 days was the longest cold soak I was able to perform due to the excessive gunk ethanol would pull from the tobacco. Extractions processed beyond 10 days developed a murky plant like chlorophyll taste and were hard on wicks and coils. I wasn't able to achieve the full range or depth of flavor I desired from a 10 day room temperature ethanol soak -but- that was back before the advent of "freeze filtering". I'd be interested to see what kind of flavor a 30+ day room temperature ethanol extraction can yield and I'll be depending on freeze filtering to remove the undesirables elements that'll be leeched from the tobacco during the process............

My first batch of "long term" room temperature ethanol soaks turned three months old on the 12th. Solvent in both the "Billy Bud" and "Voodoo Queen" appears darker and more opaque compared to solvent from 12-hour hot ethanol extractions of the same tobaccos. I siphoned off about 90ml of solvent from the "Billy Bud" extraction and ran it through a coffee filter completely clogging the filter with what appears to be an ultra fine black silt. In over 500 tobacco extractions I've -never- had that happen before. Smells great/potent and the clarity of the extract improved significantly after running it through the coffee filter although it's still black and completely opaque. I placed the extract in the freezer yesterday (-10F) and will let it sit there for a few days to see what precipitates out of solution. Am quite curious to see how this one turns out, will know in a week or so. The remainder of the Billy Bud extraction was re-sealed and will continue soaking for a few months longer.

The bulk of my long term room temperature ethanol soaks are just now two months old, all appear considerably darker, more opaque than 12-hour hot extractions of the same tobaccos. The cigar extractions really look promising but only time will tell. :)

After a three month soak the room temperature ethanol based extraction of C&D "Billy Bud" has turned out to be extremely potent and robust, far more so than a 12 hour hot extraction of the same tobacco. Freeze filtering yielded significant precipitation of undesirable elements but not as much as I expected there would be. Reduced by just 60% and allowed to set undisturbed for three days the final 1 micron filtration caught the coalesced oils which were abundant in this extract. The resulting condensed extract mixed at 9% was delightful, much stronger than a 12 hour hot extraction but the flavor profile was different. The taste of Burley and Latakia in the blend is more pronounced/bold. The smooth creamy nuance provided by the maduro cigar leaf is still the star of the show but the Virginia tobacco has moved further into the background. I'm -impressed- and while I expect the 3 month extraction of "Voodoo Queen" will share the same Burley/Latakia boost I wonder how the ample amount of Perique in the blend will present itself. Tomorrow I'll pull 90ml from the Voodoo Queen extraction and start processing it. What I'm really waiting for is samples from the second batch of extractions but those have only soaked for 9 weeks, I'll wait for the three month mark.

Did you do any shorter tests of room temperature PGA (e.g., 30 days)?

After a three month soak the room temperature ethanol based extraction

A FB bud of mine on DIY Tobacco Ejuice swears by this method. He mainly does cigars; touts that room temp, long steep ethanol extraction are THE best way to get the best results from the tobacco. I agree with his views, having done a few myself. However, I'm a lazy .... and do relatively quick (month cold steep after a few hours in a crock pot) PG extractions most of the time. I'm just a bit impatient when it comes to the ethanol extractions.

Damn you Time!

I pulled a 30 day in process sample from the Voodoo queen. The flavor was very good but really not as deep as a 12 hour hot extraction. I didn't pull a 60 day sample but full color had been achieved by that point, would probably have been very well developed. Perhaps the Latakia and Burley in the Billy Bud extraction wouldn't have been so pronounced at the 60 day mark.

Heated extractions produce quick results, ideal for sampling new tobaccos and building up a stock of extracts. I believe the flavor of some tobaccos are best extracted by quick heated soaks while others (like cigars and Virginia heavy tobacco blends) might benefit from long cold extractions. Unfortunately, most people can't afford the luxury of time when it comes to DIY NETS. I'm fortunate and have more well aged extract than I need so time isn't a major concern. Still a PITA to wait around for months on end but I have the patience required, one of the -few- benefits of advanced age. I'm really looking forward to sampling the Louisiana Red, Picayune, Acid Blondie and Acid Opulence I have soaking, normally difficult to extract they all look like they're coming along very nicely.

After a three month soak the cold extraction of Sutliff "Voodoo Queen" is only marginally better than it was at the one month mark, still not as tasty as a 12 hour heated extraction IMHO. This puzzles me after the C&D "Billy Bud" turned out so flavorful and robust. I'll report my observations on these extractions after they reach the six month mark. I'm only a couple of weeks away from the three month mark on cold extractions of "Louisiana Red", "Picayune", "Acid Blondie" and "Acid Opulence". After pulling in-process samples I'll post my thoughts.

What do you think of the PG extracted Picayune?

Enjoyably stout! It will be the NET bottle I reach for when wanting to stroll down memory lane in search for that analogue kick. My mix is a 50pg/50vg with 15% extract.

When slowly vaping this on a dripper (1.4ohm single coil at 12 watts), I can taste just about every leaf in the blend. The Perique rises to the top of the list though; which for me, is the most pleasing thing about this tobacco. At first, the Burley and Samsoun kinda take you off guard. But the more you vape this mix, the sweetness of the Virginia and the dark fruity funk of the Perique start to peek though and make this an extremely enjoyable vape.

I've vaped about 20ml of this mix so far and have to say, cellaring some Picayune and probably a couple of other D&R blends (yet to be discovered) is on my short list.

Some extraction trivia: Did you know at one time Daughters & Ryan (a tobacco company) tried to make/sell NETs? Picayune was one of them. I've never actually seen any for sale -anywhere- and in light of the FDA's deeming don't know if they are still pursuing NET manufacturing, but here's a link to a magazine ad that showed a picture of D&R's product line of NETs from a year or so ago when they attempted to enter the e-liquid market; http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...lends/&usg=AFQjCNGs1M98zNO5bUyBdlrfpoqS6KEk1Q I don't think they still make them, there's no internet presence for their products that I could find. Perhaps their first attempts at making NETs were lackluster, maybe they should have surfed our extraction forum first? ;)

Very interesting tid-bit of info! A mixologist bud of mine sent me about 5 of the Purilum synth tobaccos.....they were NOT all that and a bag of chips.

Purilum may have been one of the issues D&R faced, plus, the fact that what they were selling was NOT strawberry kiwi chocolate marshmallow infused gummy bear sweet tart custard sucralosed ladened "premium" e-liquid. ;)

I haven't actually seen poll numbers, but I imagine the folks that like a pure tobacco vape is around 1% of the vaping population.

Been vaping the alcohol extracted juice from my last 5 batches for a few weeks. (Order from P&C is shown below.) The big surprise result was the Stoved Black Virginia. Wow. Rich, unsweet and smokey, I love it. Too bad it had the lowest yield per weight because of the leaf density. Regardless, next order I'll double or triple up on it. It's that good.
