I skinned one of my VAMOs with an art deco inlay pattern using the 3D carbon vinyl. The vinyl is textured even though it doesn't show up in the photo.

I would highly recommend the 3D carbon vinyl to anyone who is tempted to give wrapping their own VAMO or any other PV a try. The vinyl is heavier than the inkjet printable vinyl, is repositionable many times and couldn't be more more forgiving when working with it. It's also very easy to remove air bubbles.

This is the template I used (plain, no deco pattern) which shows no gaps between the VAMO skin sections. The extension cap and battery section edges might become tatty looking in time because there is no metal underneath to support them.

Open source Inkscape should be able to edit this .svg file if you need to tweak dimensions. Also, most electronic cutter software should be able to import this file. - VAMO template carbon.svg.zip

If someone has access to an electronic cutter and wants the .svg or .studio file for the deco inlay pattern PM me and I will email the file(s) you want. Doing the inlay is an insanely fiddly, idiot's delight project so I didn't bother putting the files up on Dropbox.

that looks killer man! your making me wanna bust out photoshop again. The printing and cutting i don't think i could do right though. I like how yours covers the ends (top & bottom) unlike the popular wraps you can get online.

I've only thought of selling in passing. I'm a very slow crafter so it's highly unlikely to be a practical endeavor.

Well, if you ever get bored some time and make some more of the art deco ones, I'd take one off your hands... we could work somthing out. Just shoot me a PM if you get spunky. I got 2 vamo's, chrome & SS.

Thank you, Koman. Doing the finely detailed pattern was an idiot's delight but a simpler pattern would be fairly easy to do. The 3d carbon fiber vinyl is extremely forgiving.

Any chance of you posting up a short "how to" on the "idiot's delight"? Nothing overly detailed, just a 1-2-3 of how you got form plain vinyl to engraved vinyl would be more than enough.

Thanks
Seebs

I used the same pattern to cut the black and the white vinyl separately. Then I placed the black pieces that go around the buttons, filled those parts in with white inlaid pieces, added the large white piece that goes around the main body and added the rest of the pieces from there. It's a very fiddly process with such small pieces.

The 3D carbon vinyl is cheap enough on eBay that you could buy some and do a pattern with large pieces first before trying something with smaller pieces. The vinyl is easy to reposition and/or remove completely.

You really need to put a led inside your tank.
I think my wife has a electronic cutter in her craft room. She has everything else. lol

^^^ The 4" * 8" sample sizes for $3 shipped is a good deal for anyone who doesn't need or want carbon fiber vinyl for other projects. Thanks for the links.

Thanks for clarifying that. I now regret that I started the other thread, because now I'm cross-posting everything to this one. I am now seriously considering the investment in the Silhouette Cameo (I think it's your fault, BTW) - isn't it enough that I'm spending money on mods and now DIY juice? Apparently not

Now to the real business...ninfreak found these great (colors and patterns!) 4X8 samples on ebay for those of us who don't want much larger sheets (most are $2.99 or less for one sheet, free shipping)...

A friend of mine cutted some black vinyl in a plotter for me with this template, and I'm so happy with the result. Also did it in a friend Vamo.
Mine was the black chrome and it was becoming a half black scratched chrome half metal gray ugly machine. Now it looks like this:

Some details, the buttons have no more rattle snake sounds, so now I have a silent pv. ;)

This looks swee-eet. How did the wrap silence the button rattles?? They vinyl doesn't appear to be touching them.

I received my silver and black carbon vinyl pieces today. I will try to wrap one of them in the next few days and post some pics too.

You almost cant tell that the vinyl is touching the buttons, all 3 of them. But if you look very carefully the vinyl is touching the buttons and now it's a low noise pv, no bat rattle no buttons shaking, oh so good. :)
