I used to use old school garbage bag ties as coils but it took forever to dry burn the paper covering off.

Seriously though, paperclips are made of round wire, so I am not suprised. Amazed that people don't know about or bother to learn about vaping safety, but not suprised. Crazy!

Back in the day, those "Fire" batteries were our 'best choice'. So some of us have a fair amount of experience using them. So trust me on this one, an ICR battery would never fire a paperclip coil. If you were lucky, the protection ckt would catch it, but more than likely you would instantly have thermal runaway.

They're "protected cells", so in any case they won't let you go that low with the resistance.
But, you're right about on thing, they'd go from room temperature to +100c in a millisecond.

Was it a parallel wired mod? Because they will fire with one battery and it may have been firing with the other.

mhmm, I used them for my flashlights for a long time, it wasn't until I bought VTC4's did I realize how bad they actually were, my flashlight instantly got twice as bright (Back before I started vaping).

Yea, he didnt want to "Pay a store some ungodly price for normal wire with a special name" so he had wrapped a set of dual coils from a paperclip... I asked him what the resistance was. He actually told me that resistance was futile. I almost walked away from him at that point, but I knew if I did soon he would become a statistic.

Oh the inner conflict! The humanitarian part of me is grateful you were there to help! The less nice part of me is thinking that if he was so cheap and had so little brain power he used a paper clip as a coil, it might have been ok to let that one go and let him thin himself from the herd. But then the nicer part of me wonders how many innocents he might have taken out with him. Such quandaries.

Granted i have looked at paperclips before and thought about it, but just didnt think it was a good idea. I have used paper clip wire for other projects in the past and seen what looked like chrome flaking off when bent tightly. Figured that was a bad thing to vape on.

Yeah, we had another guitar string question last night. I can see why folks are tempted, but I've played for 35 years and haven't used any strings that would be appropriate for vaping. There may be some, but none that I'm aware of.

I just bought an RBA for my Crown & DIY my own E-Liquid & it is now very cheap to vape compared to smoking can't see me being that desperate to do these kind of things I mean I don't ever remember pulling cigarette butts out of an ash tray to make my own smoke or rolling hay because I ran out of smokes

Could have been worse I guess... He could have wicked them with some rolled toilet paper and just stuffed aluminum foil against 2 AA batteries. Thank you @EverPresentNoob for helping him out though, that surely could have resulted in a tragedy if ignored.

Bull .... the trustfire is a FUSED battery. It wold simply shut off, and you would have to remove the battery from the mod for it to reset itself after each hit. Provided that it didn't go thermo. 4 amp Lithium Cobalt batteries don't do well at 130 amps.

This is actually a pic of a protected Trustfire ICR battery which exploded in my mechanical mod about three years ago. This was back in the day when protected batteries were recommended, and the safe chemistry "unprotected" IMR batteries were just coming onto the market and not yet recommended. Today, protected ICR batteries are considered obsolete for mod use.

I was using only a 2.0 ohm cartomizer on the mech. Accidental prolonged compression of the fire button caused the battery to go into thermal runaway.

(Sorry for the poor pic quality. Both ends of the battery blew out from the gas pressure and the plastic wrapper melted. Luckily the mod had adequate ventilation.)

When I was a fairly new member someone came on asking if he could vape Lysol and Windex and other cleaning products because he ran out of e liquid. Another was using olive oil.

So that leads me to believe people are doing all kinds of dangerous things. Who knows what some of these explosions entailed? Maybe coils made from paper clips, guitar strings, fencing?
