vaping outside of work the other day. We have a designated smoking area and although I could vape inside - I dont want to deal with the HR hassle and besides, it gets me away from my desk.

... anyway, Im vaping on my break outside when a couple of co-workers, who I know work for the company but I do not know personally, ask me what Im smoking.

THe one kid says, "thats one of those electronic cigarettes?" I said yes and he asked some questions about it, which I politely answered. Then a friend of mine came up to our little group and started talking to me.
Well the kid who asked me about my e-cig asked if he could "check it out" so I said sure and let him hold it.

Now I thought he would examine it, maybe play with the button and stuff so I turned my attention to my friend who was talking, when I turn back the two who had came over to ask about my e-cig were both puffing on it. I took it back from them, put it in my pocket and went inside... my break was now over.

Now back in the day I passed a joint or two around and even shared cigarettes with people. But nowadays its not something I do. After being in the workforce for 20+ years I have learned something about people. Some, even many, do not practice good hygenine.

Anyway I was ......, I didnt tell them they could puff on it and perhaps I shouldnt have let them "check it out" without specifying what they could do with it.

Anyone else think this was rude? or was it my own fault for letting them hold it in the first place?

Well from some of the responses maybe Im just overreacting. Cost of parts/ejuice/battery is not what I was concerned about.

I also failed to mention that after he and his friend hit it others were coming up and he was offereing it to them. I couldnt stop the first offer but I stopped the second.

I think maybe I just didnt like the kid.

Without wishing to appear rude, what did you expect him to do with it when he asked to check it out?

When people have asked to have a look at mine I've always changed the cart so they don't get one I've used.

Oh you arent being rude at all. I guess I wasnt thinking when I gave it to him to "check out" I felt like I was showing him something. Guess I forgot what it really was for a second. I think about anything else that is "consumed"... if someone were asked to check it out I would have to assume they are going to "consume" it as well.

Like if you are holding an imported beer that comes in a cool bottle...and someone said.. can I check that out?... would you expect them to take a drink or just examine the bottle?

Someone needs to invent a PV mouthpiece condom. LOL Everyone always wants to try it out (can't blame them!!).

Yeah, there was a time that nobody thought about passing around something smokable... now there are too many cooties out there (and some will stay with you forever like herpes).

I was at a party last week and every one wanted to try my Vapor King. I had a full cart on it and I am not one to vape on it after someone else has. I did allow one to try it though. I turn around look back and there are 4-5 people there passing it around needless to say I threw the cartomiser out.. That was 10.00 bucks down the drain.

Not rude at all, you did hand it over. People are to concerned with personal space these days, I don't think you can get herpes from puffing off the same cart. It does seem a little OCD ish but I am not one to invade anothers PS. You can get the same germs or worse by just shaking hands. I beleive that rude is in the intent and not the action, I mean didn't we all kiss hundreds of girls playing spin the bottle as teenagers? Only thing I really got was mono, but I still remember the girl to this day, man she was hot!

Ha E-condoms lol. I'm always trying to promote e-cigs to fellow smokers. I've learned a lot of them will still put anything in there mouth if you hand it to them. Soo I carry an Extra cart with me at all times. I do attempt to wash it. When someone looks like they want to try a puff I take off my mouth piece. Put the public piece on and give them a fresh drip.

Another good reason to use a 3 piece e-cig

I would have been annoyed. Especially if I didn't already like them.
In terms of etiquette, it's a bit like using your cool new cellphone to make a call after asking to check it out. In terms of hygiene, well, it's like sharing your drink without permission.

On the other hand, if a close friend or partner did that, I wouldn't be annoyed. Yes, it's a double standard, but a rational one. There are certain etiquette barriers between co-workers that are and should be higher than the barriers between close personal contacts.

Hm. Were these guys analog smokers or former smokers?
See, cause I think their attitude is a throwback:
If somebody reaches for your lit analog and asks "May I?" and you hand it over, you have to expect they'll take a drag. Analogs are throwaway, they have one purpose.

And I have seen a distinct line between analog smokers who ask to see my e-cig and nonsmokers who ask to see it. The analog (or former analog) smokers will motion to drag on it. The nonsmokers ask if they can take a drag - or just hand it back to me. But my sample size is very small so far, so this could be a fluke pattern.

It depends upon the place and the people. In the circumstances you laid out I would have taken the PV back and said, "Oh, I didn't know you were going to suck on it! I'd get a check up with you doctor ASAP. Oops, breaks over, see ya"

In the future I'd show the PV to people but never let it leave my grasp. Show them how to use it then hand out cards with the ECF url on them.

But if it is a really hot lady.... might be another story.;)

Now that's funny.

After thinking about it a bit more, your right because you didn't know them. I would have never done so without asking and neither would anyone I know. I have handed mine over to many, many people and not one has ever taken a puff without asking, even family. I guess I am just used to the south where polite is expected.

Well if you handed it to the Kid when he said "Can I check it out" you should expect him to hit it.

If you didn't like him you could have just blown a hit into his face and said check that out.

When he passed it to others he was being rude.

Once I set my PV down on the counter at Radio Shack, the clerk was eyeballing it so I said "Do you know what that is?" he said No. I said "It's a Detonator". He picks it up and pushes the button holding it down. I grabbed it away from him and said "I didn't tell you to xxxxing touch it!" He looked a little hurt- boo hoo. I just didn't want my button held down with the atty getting hot. I took a big hit and blew it out and I said you like that don't you?

I have let complete strangers hit my PV. I look at them and if they look fairly clean I will not think much of it- but these have been very rare ocasions. I never heard of catching herpes from passing smokables around. I sure don't want the flu though.

Glad you grabbed it back when he started passing it around. That part was not cool.
