Nah - they never sold anything like that. That'd be dangerous, and illegal.

I don't want to get into trouble on here so if this isn't allowed, please take it down. This stuff was sold legally without a prescription until 1970. You can search on wiki for the particulars. I remember it was given to my sister for teething problems.

Ah good old patent medicines. LOL I will freely admit there are times I wish I lived in that day and age. Okay, so maybe I would go out with polio or TB but at least I'd go out happy.

Also, when you HAD TB back in the day (enough) they used to tell you to smoke more cigarettes to "fortify your lungs." LOL, I found that out by reading Anais Nin journals in HS.

Also, do not read Anais Nin journals, is my recommendation. They sure were interesting but they don't really um, make one think highly of the psychological dudes of the time, like Freud and Jung. To be fair, that chick was UNTREATABLE nuts, but I can't think of a better person to have TB, she was just unbearably awful.

The closest you can get nowadays is Theraflu. Theraflu has some weird non normal antihistamine that gets me all floaty. I actually had to check with my sponsor if it was okay to use it as directed.

She was like, "Yes, so that means a legit cold or flu."

    LOL.

A month after my son was born he had what’s called neonatal teething. My husbands grandmother told me to ask for that, so like a new mommy I did. My poor baby paid the price for it for the next 2 visits. They took blood from his foot testing it. Of course they said it was for blood sugar, but the Dr. went on a rant about asking for a narcotic for a infant.

Today that would net you a CPS case.

Society sure has changed. My ex-MIL used to give my ex-husband COKE (the beverage) only it was IN HIS BABY bottle.

I think some of us kids may have gotten the "slight amount of alcohol plus medicine" in our baby bottle, not by our mother, but by our maternal grandmother. I never asked though, because I found my maternal grandmother to be absolutely terrifying in every way and avoided her like the plague.

When I'm upset with my mom about something I like to remember that she had my maternal grandmother care for me as an infant. Then I get to blame TWO people for my problemz.

But really if you ,look back it is AMAZING how society has changed. The idea of "deeming" was not even a THING! The FDA was not a THING. Medical treatment was leeches (still useful today) and maggots (also sometimes used today) plus whatever distracting mod altering substance you can get your hands on and etc.

I still think there is a valid role for some psychedelics in the treatment of PTSD and some other stuff, including a particularly hated one for addiction. But, I don't think we shall be finding out any time soon. Etc.

Yeah, well maybe the doctor knew you were only wanting to "soothe" yourself after the Tigers went undefeated and still didn't get to play for the championship! :pervy:

edit: And the Dr. was probably a Tide fan.

I have fond memories of watching my dad mix up a batch of whiskey, honey and lemon when my cough was bad as a kid. It always seemed to help!
I make a hot toddy using tea. I don’t care for hot lemon anything.
    Mines whiskey, tea, honey, cinnamon

Not sure how the honey and lemon helped him. I find that with enough straight whiskey, I don't really care what kind of annoying noises people make. ;)

Okay, since you said that about your state: I have to give one of my favorite jokes. (keep in mind people probably say this using Georgia)(and I have a little bit of antipathy after the frickin' crushing loss we just suffered a little while ago!):

What's the most common thing heard during $ex in Alabama?
"Get offa me Daddy, you're crushin' my cigarettes!"

If people get divorced in Kentucky are they still cousins?

In England we make jokes about the Irish and the Scots. In Indiana it's Kentuckians. In Kentucky I hear they make jokes about people from Indiana.
