To this day I still love and eat baked bean sandwiches. I also put homemade chili over a piece of bread.I still eat tomato sandwiches, also pineapple, but my favorite is potato salad sandwiches!
Wow! You could afford pineapple and steak once a week? I ate apples and had hamburger on some summer Friday nights. That was one of my favorites as a kid! We didn't know then that we weren't rich, though. Back then, we considered ourselves middle class. Pineapple sandwiches here and there for lunch in the summer and steak on the grill on most Friday nights during the Summer.
A 56 Chevy! I would have given my left arm for a 56 Chevy. I was traveling with my '64 Ford Falcon station wagon 2 speed that I got for 50 bucks.I realized that others were way ahead of us when I entered senior high. The rich kids had new Mustangs and Camaros. I was driving a 56 Chevy that I had to work on most of the time
My dad ate onion and cheese sandwiches. Here in NOLA, it was “french fries” and gravy on french bread, thus the name poboy (couldn’t afford meat). My older relatives grew up during the Great Depression, so they made do with what they had or could afford. I remember them telling me that at times they ate mayonnaise or tomato sandwiches because that was all that they could afford.![]()
I go with the tomato sandwich and fried bologna sandwitch.how in the world did this come up on this thread, sure is making me hungry.I still eat tomato sandwiches, also pineapple, but my favorite is potato salad sandwiches!

French fries or hash browns with sausage gravy is the bomb. Why not put them in a sandwich? Here in NOLA, it was “french fries” and gravy on french bread, thus the name poboy (couldn’t afford meat).

My grandpa used to always make spaghetti sandwiches with leftovers. Not bad, but meh.
Other than fried bologna sandwiches, my favorite as a kid was breakfast for dinner night: Fried egg, just a hint of runnyness in the yolk, a trace of salad dressing (not mayo) on the toast, and loads of Plochman's mustard. Still eat that sometimes.
Been there, done that, hope I never do again.....You haven't been poor until you have eaten a fried Spam sandwich.
Spam cost more than a tomato growing up! ( we grew ours)You haven't been poor until you have eaten a fried Spam sandwich.
