I wasn't saying they care about our opinions- what I am saying is that we are a force they will have to contend with. Certainly they will have the upper hand but I can see droves of folks putting information out regarding the truth and those who have sat idle may finally wake up and do something... I just think that if they restrict us too much, people will take notice.

Public opinion polls on Mayor Nanny's restriction in NYC of sodas in cups larger than 16 oz vary, depending on who's doing the answering.

In this one, 91% oppose it. POLL: Are You OK With a Government Ban on Soda? - Hampton-North Hampton, NH Patch

But in this one, that is heavily populated by people in the medical field, it's a 50-50 split. Apparently folks in the medical field do feel they know better than we do what is best for us. Survey

And citizens of the big apple themselves seem more prone to accepting government restrictions on their legal activities than the rest of the country. http://wvgazette.com/News/politico/201206130015

But voters in the rest of the country seem split along party lines: The Hill Poll: Dems twice as likely to back Big Gulp soda ban - TheHill.com

I suspect that there might also be a split based on big city versus rural residents. The rural folks I know tend to be fiercely independent and don't trust big government, while it seems that many of the city folk are just fine with being told what to do.
