Umanbean...ditto to what R2C2 and Iffy said. And R2C2 guess I gotta google click and clean.

OK, when is spring gonna be here? We're gettin' up to 38 today...I know y'all up north of here think that's a heat wave, but I'm shiverin' like a puppy poopin' peach seeds.

1) Wow... I started this right after Iffy's and Rat2's posts... bunch of posts since then.
2) The ECF forum software "parsed" many of the below addresses into clickable addresses.

My wife needs the computer to place her Avon order (she's a local rep), so I'll come back later and redo this post without "parsing"... y'all please be patient. TIA
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

edit#2 (2-7-14 early a.m.)

Sorry folks, fell asleep last night while me wife was on the computer. So let's try this again, without the parsing...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

edit#3:

Hmmm, that didn't work either... even though I unchecked the "Automatically parse links in text" and " Automatically retrieve titles from external links" in the options box below.

Good news though: I copied the block and pasted it into Notepad, and it pasted the actual text of all the "www." links... so it actually works as it should. Just don't click on any of the links below.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most folks don't realize this, but when you go to a webpage, a lot a crap that you don't want gets "pushed" onto your computer along with the page you wanted to see. This is how Facebok, Twitner, Googal, Dubalclick (sic) and many many many other companies track you in your travels all over the WWW, and push ads and other junk onto your web browser. It also takes time to push all that junk to your computer, so it slows down page load times for the page you actually wanted to see.

The path to your Hosts file is:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS

One of more of those sub-folders may be hidden. If so:

Windows XP- Open Windows Explorer. At the top, click Tools -> Folder Options. At the top of that panel, click View and partway down in that window, click the radio button next to Show hidden files and folders. While there, I always uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.

Windows 7- (I'm doing this from memory, hope it's accurate.) Open Control Panel. If you have a bunch of (to me) meaningless categories on the right, look on the left and click Classic Control Panel or Classic View or Classic ~sompthin~. The right side should now show the Control Panel icons. Click Folder Options. I ~think~ from there you can follow the above directions. If not, give me a shout, we'll walk through it.

BTW, there's a program you can download off the internet called Teamviewer. I can also run Teamviewer on my end and, after you give me the password, remote control your computer while you watch or while we talk on the phone. I use that on my Moms' and brothers' computers to remote troubleshoot. It's safe, and the password (on your end) changes each time you run the program, so I can not later remote in without your knowledge or permission.

If you're running Windows XP, you can copy/paste the all-caps line above, then click Start -> Run, paste it there, then click OK. If you have Vista (ugh) or Windows 7, you can click Start and type Hosts in the Search area at the bottom of the panel that pops up and either hit Enter or click Hosts after it pops up at the top.

I'm using an XP Pro computer right now. My Windows 7 computer is on the blink at the moment, so I may be a little off on the specific directions if 7 is what you have. If y'all have any problems or questions, let me know.

The Hosts file has no extension, so there is no program associated with it, to open it. Windows will open a dialog box asking what program you want to use to open it. It has to be edited with a plain text editor, in my case Notepad.

My Hosts file is kinda cobbled together at the moment, I plan to clean it up and add some more entries. You can copy/paste the entire block below into your Hosts file. Save it, close all browser windows, and reboot for it to take effect. The lines beginning with # are just comments. Here is mine currently:

# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.

KB checking in, hey this back porch is a cozy looking place. What's up my fellow vapers? I'm sitting here watching the figure skating from Russia, pure poetry in motion....

Note to self: Be sure to bring my cushion from the front porch next time, iffy's got that twinkle in his eye...

Iffy is perfectly capable of removing the cushion from its cover and sneaking a whoopie cushion inside. It might be best to bring your cushion from home. Don't even let him touch it. His sense of humor can strike at any moment.

OKay - I have chrome... how do I add a click and clean to it??? (the other conversation was wayyyyyy over my head, lol... )

Here is the extention. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...cgeogidfmibmhp?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher

I'm still playing around with it but it looks like it might be sort of neat. Here is another Chrome extention that I like that makes everything easy. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/...gmdfbajngjmoke?utm_source=chrome-app-launcher This puts everything in one place and lets me look at my email, calendar, drive and bookmarks in one place. I like it.

NoScript is another good one for Firefox, don't know if it has ports to other browsers.

Just go to Tools, click Add-ons, then Get AddOns. You can search for them by name, or in (I think) the Security area.

Ad Block Plus and NoScript.

Sometimes a sluggish browser can just be from its own cache. Easy to clean in Firefox, again, Tools. Then Options. Click the Advanced tab and then click the Network tab. You'll see a couple of listings for "cache" and the one for Web Content is the one you want. You can change it's size, but that's another story :) You can clear the other if you wish, won't hurt anything, but I usually find mine to be empty anyway.

A computer with a small or slow hard drive can bog down if it needs to read/write a lot of data, and periodically clearing the cache can sometimes help.

It is taking all my will power to not order some flavorings from Good Prophets. They have a 50% off which makes a 30ml bottle of flavoring $3.49. I will use up what I have.... I will use up what I have.... I will use up what I have.... heehee

But, I also ruined a number of shirts by carrying them in my pockets as a kid! I like a GOOD ballpoint better.

I hear you! There is no getting away from the fact that fountain pens are problematic to carry around! Which is pretty much exactly why ballpoints were invented.

I discovered and begged and borrowed and finally bought a GREAT new solution to this age-old problem! One Touch :: Monteverde Pens

It's a rollerball that refills with fountain pen ink! Finally, something to do with my bottles and bottles of ink, without having to worry about all my antique-y old fps that need new rubber bladders when they dry out (which they do, if you're silly and leave ink in them too long) and need an expert with special parts!

There are varieties of this Monte Verde pen, diff colors etc. I have one, and I'm loving it -- had to save for awhile to get one. Works great! There are also less expensive versions, not Monte Verde, of pens that can take fountain pen ink, but after research, this looks like the one to go with, or at least it was for me.
