Matt, that looks like a picture we could take from the front of our house! We've got about as much snow left here now as in your picture from today, but I hear that the folks attending the Super Bowl are going to have to get home quick because about 1 a.m. on Monday it's going to start snowing until we have another 6-12". Boy this has been the snowiest winter we've had in awhile. At least it's not ice! We've had a few ice winters and that is not fun at all unless you count some of the hysterical slips and slides I took!

Now lets hope more snow holds off until you're moved in!! We're sitting here looking at 2" of snow on the ground and hoping for Spring

Oh, you effete southerners. We've got about a foot and a half on the ground, which is fairly normal for this time of year. And it's supposed to get above zero for two days in a row next week:laugh:. But it has been entertaining this winter watching the national TV folks explaining how to dress warmly and how to drive in snow.

On a more serious note, about the smoke alarms, I didn't think that much about it at the time, but then I saw a story about another fire nearby where the family had to jump out the second floor windows. They wouldn't have had that opportunity if one of them hadn't had to visit the bathroom and saw the smoke. They were so short of time that they didn't get a chance to put clothes and shoes on and ended up with frostbitten feet.

We had the luxury of being able to get our boots and coats on and grab a few things. So I can sit here with my beloved kindle fire hd and communicate with you guys.

The oddball thing about the housing situation is that it will probably be cheaper by a long way to buy an existing house. The problem with that is that my orchard just started bearing well this year, and at this point in life I really don't want to start it from scratch again. One option we're looking at is to see if we can find something nearby, maybe actually in one of the small towns, and commute to the garden and orchard during the summer.

I have a confession

I quit over a year ago, and I still have 2 full unopened cartons of cigs in the garage frig (hubby's beer frig)
Since the price of cigs keeps going up, they keep going up in value (to someone)
Anyone else still have a "security blanket" laying around

I just happened to see them the other day (chilling some champagne for the SeaHawk game)
I'm thinking if I live long enough, they will become "collectables".

Okay, bad joke warning. This is a variation on one that I first saw in a wonderfull book put together back in the 60s by some of the folks transplanted up here by the air force called "July, August and Winter" but I was too lazy to type that one out again. For all of you people who aren't used to much winter but are suffering through it this year.
60 above zero: Floridians turn on the heat. North Dakotans plant gardens.

50 above zero: Californians shiver uncontrollably. People are sunbathing in North Dakota.

40 above zero: Import cars won't start. People in North Dakota drive with the sunroof open.

32 above zero: Distilled water freezes. The water in North Dakota gets thicker.

20 above zero: New Mexicans put on long johns, parkas and wool hats & mittens. People in North Dakota throw on a flannel shirt.

15 above zero: New York landlords finally turn on the heat. People in North Dakota have one last cookout before it gets cold.

Zero:people in Miami all die. People in North Dakota close the windows.

10 below zero: Californians fly away to Mexico. People in North Dakota dig their winter coats out of storage.

25 below zero: Hollywood disintegrates. Girl Scouts in North Dakota still selling cookies door to door.

40 below zero: Washington D.C. finally runs out of hot air. People in North Dakota let their dogs sleep indoors.

100 below zero: Santa Claus abandons the North Pole. People in North Dakota get upset because the mini-van won't start.

460 below zero: ALL atomic motion stops (absolute zero on the Kelvin scale). People in North Dakota can be heard to say, "Cold 'nuff fer ya?"

500 below zero: Hell freezes over. North Dakota public schools open 2 hours late.

Not true - they would open on time :) Hang in there, only a few more months until spring!

Funny, I continued my daily internet stroll and wandered over to Facebook and one of my friends from way back had posted the exact same relative weather joke only his said Montana instead of North Dakota.

One of the things that I love about the internet is being able to connect with friends from long ago. This is someone I knew 40 years ago, and we end up posting the same thing almost simultaneously.

I still have 4 unopened packs in my shop. They've been steeping for about 2 1/2 years now.

Amoret - LOVED the joke. We're only in PA, but when my sister visits from FL it's always made me laugh when it's 70 degrees here and she's COLD! She swears they have seasons down there... I do like having distinct seasons, but Spring is my favorite so a perfect world for me would be Spring and Fall and just skip summer and winter extremes. Winter would only last 1 month with tons of snow.

It does seem that our bodies adjust pretty quickly to extreme temps. The other day Mike and I were saying how warm it felt when it got to 31 degrees.

Slotts - I had the remaining 1/2 pack of cigs on top of our refrigerator for 6 months before tossing it - just in case. I didn't realize Mike had some packs squirreled away until our contractor friend wanted to stop work on our roof one day to go to the store for smokes. It was a good thing Mike could bring out a pack for him because if the guy left we might not have seen him again for the rest of the day. You could be right about your cartons going up in value. I've never seen the price of them go down!

R2 - LOVED the Groundhog picture! We have a lot of the critters living around here and we haven't spotted any of them. Given the new snow that's due in tonight we don't expect to see them anytime soon.

Slots you are not alone. I still have 3 packs in my freezer from 14 months ago. My husband has asked several times if he should throw them out. My response has always been no - they don't take much room and I just like having them there.

I rarely think about smoking anymore. But since I have been avoiding going outside much with the cold it had been several months since I actually had even smelled a cigarette burning. We were in Vegas for New Years and as we walked into one of the casinos (can't remember which one) caught the smell of cigarette smoke and all my brain could think was WOW that sure smells good  My husband thought I was losing it - but even though I didn't want a cigarette - it did smell good ........

Hey, if keeping a few packs in the freezer gives you comfort, why not! It took me 6 months to finally throw away the 1/2 pack sitting on top of the fridge and Mike still has a few packs hidden the the garage somewhere.

I used to love the smell of the first puff of a cigarette, but now I can't stand the smell at all and unfortunately I can smell smoke from quite a distance these days. Guess that's a good thing - less temptation. Our contractor would go into our garage for a smoke and even with the doors open it took awhile for the smell to leave. Geeze, I used to smell like that...

I have a pack of smokes sitting on my windowsill... they keep me company and reduce separation anxiety, lol...
