I finally got to the point where the work to keep up the house and grounds just seemed to be too much. The thought of packing up and moving is overwhelming. The good thing is that I've spent the last few years getting rid of stuff and convincing Mike that he should do the same. Can't believe all the stuff we've gotten rid of already and there's still so much left! Ideally I'd love to have a small place around here and a small place in CO. Then we could be snowbirds from east to west. Gonna need a winning lottery ticket to make that happen!!

Colorado has gotten more snow than you by a large margin this year so far. I have a friend in Denver that I think is still digging out.

Sent with no malice and not a whole lot of forethought from my new Galaxy Tab 4. Thanks Santa!

We researched mighty hard before we bought our home in NE Florida...Palm Coast.....best detective work we did. Close to the beach, cause that is a priority; close enough to I-95, stores, our doctors, and hospital but we're out of the way so don't hear any traffic.

Daughter is in Tampa, son is in St. Augustine, and one cousin here in P.C. and another in Port Orange and even more cousins down in Palm Beach. Close enough that we get together often and far enough that we have our space. Only one of my daughters is in Md., but she won't leave! She'd have to change teaching positions, and she's not willing to do that.

Because we in the NE Sector, we even get freezes here. I'm glad I didn't get rid of my winter garb, because I do use it here.

May I add my voice here to research and research deeply. Talk to residents if you can. Stay at a motel for a weekend, and scout the area.

My dad designed a lot of Palm Coast when it was first starting up. I grew up on Seaview Avenue in Daytona.

Sent with no malice and not a whole lot of forethought from my new Galaxy Tab 4. Thanks Santa!

Yep, they're stuck in the arctic blast this week. Last year we had more snow than they did. We usually feel their weather here 2-3 days later. I keep Denver weather and our weather next to each other on my phone and can't tell you how often it's warmer there than here. Not this week though!!! When they do get cold they're colder than here, but it doesn't last long. They do get snow much later in the year than we do, but it's no big deal, at least where she's located which is just outside downtown. One May we were in tank tops, shorts and flip flops until dinnertime when the temps dropped 50 degrees and we woke up to 8" of snow. By 3:00 that afternoon it was gone! Around here it would stick around for a week and get all dirty and ugly. It's too dry out there for the snow to last long enough to get dirty. It's our humidity here that gets us. They don't even plow the back streets and only do the main ones for rush hour traffic. I'm not sure how the weather compares farther south, like around CO Springs, but you don't have to go very far at all north or west to have much harsher weather. it's all about the mountains...

I lived in Hollywood, FL. The ORIGINAL, FIRST Hollywood. Just south of Ft Lauderdale. 1 mile from the beach. My son grew up on Hollywood Beach. We were known as "James' parents" LOL! Restaurants along the board walk (well, asphalt walk). We had friends who owned one and spent a lot of weekends there.

Meet Me in St Louie Louie
On relocation ..

In my younger years, I lived a fairly nomadic, gypsy life .. and settled here in Fly Over Country about 25 years ago .. after having lived in Idaho, Colorado, Texas, North Carolina, Tennessee and California and traveling to and from most of what's left, State wise .. I built a good life for myself, own a nice home and two Commercial buildings .. many if not most in the area know me, my neighborhood is quiet and clean and I live at the end of a cul-de-sac dead end street on about 1/3rd of an acre lot .. it's enough room to feel like I'm not sitting right next to the house next door, yet still managable for me in the Spring, Summer and Fall .. the same girl (well, she was a girl back then) has cut my hair when I choose to actually get a haircut, for over 20 years (just an example of how ingrained I am in my ways) .. I have all the amenities I could want, although I'm not much of a shopper, it's there if I need it .. the Kroger is 4 minutes away, the Walgreens is 3 minutes away ... I've had the same Doctor for 10 years, my lifestyle was like a well worn shoe, comfortable, uneventful, bland in many ways, at least as far as I was concerned ..

Yet, when the doo doo hit the fan in and around 2007, I began seriously thinking of relocation .. my logic was, I could consolidate things into one spot, the real estate market was dropping like a rock, there were incredibly good deals out there, I was 7 or 8 years younger then, I think a bit of the wanderlust hit me, I believed if I was to do it, this would be the time ..

Having been a nomad in the past, I knew all places had their good and bad points but what did I want .. ?? I wanted 4 distinct Seasons, I wanted to be close enough to a cultural center in order to not have a major drive, I wanted a quiet neighborhood with the amenities close at hand .. I wanted a quality house with enough land that I could have, if it was not there already, at least a 3000 SQ FT workshop / warehouse .. I wanted what I already had ..

So I looked .. and narrowed it down to Colorado Springs (where I had once lived) or Reno (which I had fell in love with in my younger years). I decided the best thing to do was just put the properties up on the market, pack it up and move, taking temporary housing if the house sold and then waiting for the other property to sell ..

I listed the house and the property .. within a week, my Realtor called and said "Great news .. we have a contract on the house within 3% of what you were asking .. it's not gonna get any better than that" .. that night, I sat in my recliner, with a bottle of JD and an ice bucket next to me, listening to some of my favorite vinyl from the 1960's 70's .. thinking, and smoking my Marlboros .. I went to sleep in the chair around 2 AM ..

I was awaked by the sound of the doorbell, said Realtor outside .. we sat down at the dining room table and she spread the paperwork out, indicating where I should sign .. I silently declined the offer on each and every line .. as she recovered from her shock and quized me, I declined to offer any explaination ..

Because, that night, I guess I finally came to realize that, chasing whatever it was I was chasing, that feeling I was wanting, that mystery of the new, the idea that maybe a move would help revitalize me, re-invigorate those old feelings from days gone by .. would be a fleeting thing at best .. because I already had all that I had worked for all around me .. or maybe I was just chicken ..

Kudos to all of you that make the move, and apologies for the "book" length post .. the muse hit me this morning ..

Hey what else can we do now ?
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow
Back your hair
Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh-oh come take my hand
We're riding out tonight to case the promised land

On Moving: I've been in this house for 17 years. Part of me wants to pick up and go. Another part of me is quite content right where I am. It used to be a little bit country where I am, but growth and population has exploded here within the last 5 years. It is now burbs. The yard is not unmanageable. It takes about an hour to mow and weed whack. Still, if I had my real druthers, I'd be somewhere in the middle of the country with no neighbors for miles. My head knows at my age, that's a little unrealistic. My heat keeps dreaming.

My once upon a time dream was to retire at 60, but thanks to the economy, I'll probably be working until I drop dead, even though the house is paid for.

Willy got me thinking and I will tell you all something that I really haven't shared with anyone else. Well my wife knows but is kind of ignoring it. I really don't want to move. I kind of like the situation I am in. I'm not thrilled with where I live but am real happy with how I live. I have a nice house that I had just about gotten to where I wanted it. Attached 2 1/2 car garage that had been closed in and was my office for a while. Now it is my workshop. It has almost every tool and amenity that I could want, table saw, band saw, radial arm saw, drill press, peg board walls with every mechanics tool you can think of, plumbing tools, electrical tools, electronic tools and on and on. The house has all the wiring in the walls for the home theater, 50" plasma TV on the wall over the fireplace. Great kitchen. Anyway you all get my point. Now we gotta move into a 2 bedroom townhouse with no workshop nor even any place to store my stuff. I am going to build a small workshop on the back screen porch and cram all of it in there temporarily but I have to sell my compressor and radial arm saw because I just won't have room for it.
I am afraid that if I move I will never get back to that comfort level. Doree swears we will but, folks I've put a lot of work into where I am now. Kinda scared I'll lose it all. Oh well nuff .....ing for now. Thanks for listening my friends.

I'll tell you Matt, being a woodworker myself, when I went thru the move / not move bit, as trivial as it may sound to some, the tool issue was a big issue .. I've spent probably 30 or more years gathering, organizing and arranging .. and, I am a Home Theater buff as well, with a theater that contains a 7.2 surround system and 120" projection screen / projector .. I found it next to impossible to come close to any place I might buy that would not require a substantial investment in time, energy and materials in order to come close to matching what I currently have ..

In addition, I essentially gutted my current home over the years .. Tuscan Kitchen with full Italian tile and custom Maple cabinetry, main bath with full Italian tile and a whirlpool tub .. 7' cedar stockade privacy fence, 3 level back deck .. one year, I went so far as to rip out the flat ceiling in the living / dining areas, cut the ceiling joists out, reinforce the rafters and create a Cathedral ceiling with skylights .. I'm not trying to toot my own horn here, and I did most all the work myself, but I would be lying if I did not say a part of my choice to stay put was all this and the years it took to get done .. like you said, just where I want it .. I put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into it until my home became an extension of my personality, if that makes any sense ..

You and others here that are in the process of any relocation I believe all have a life partner to consider, which, had I been in those shoes, may have made a difference for me .. at the end of the day, it's a tough thing to do, especially at many of our ages .. and I admire those that have or will do it ..

I can certainly identify with your story Matt. I'm kind of in the same situation. The original 2 car garage is my workshop. The previous owners built an attached 3 car garage and were going to use the original garage as a mother-in-law room. Well when we moved in it became my work area. I've got enough hand tools to open my open Ace hardware store not to mention power tools and stationary tools. A couple years ago we looked at some townhouses considering downsizing and all that.

I would sure not miss keeping up 3+ acres of property and a large house both time and money wise - but yikes what do I do with all my toys. I try telling myself - if I get into someplace with less upkeep and yard work I can get rid of some of it. But what?

Matt, Mike, Willie and all - that is part of the reason that our downsizing and moving is going to take so long. My wife and I have over 26 years of stuff and I have things that I have owned since I was a teenager - that is a lot of stuff to go through. We are taking our time. We also have not made up our mind exactly what we are looking for in our retirement home and area - we know what we want, but not what we are willing to leave behind!!!

I am or have been in the past just a bit eclectic and a bit of a hoarder (not like the ones on TV) and have never been able to part with almost anything. Over the last few years I have started learning how to part with stuff - I had every paper I had ever written (16 boxes), I had every or almost every book/magazine I had ever read - (a lot of boxes), etc. I still have the leisure suit I wore to my high school prom (which I may add I looked very good in back in those days ;)), but I have come to a point to where I am having to let go of a lot of things. I have already shredded, burned, sold, traded, gave away so much stuff I cannot relate to how on earth I ever even collected all of it.

What we are looking at doing and maybe this will help some others in their decisions - we are bit by bit clearing out all but the most treasured memories and we are going to build new ones. Our plan is to go to an almost minimalist level and then find a house or build a house that fits what we need and furnish it anew. In a way start fresh... ;) The new will be kept to a minimal level, but it will be the absolute for each piece we add back into our surroundings. No more collecting - we will have a singular - so called - ultimate collection of our best memories and our new memories.

Three level deck that wraps halfway around a 24 round above ground pool. Couldn't afford an in ground. I'm going to insist on a minimum of 2 acres and a 4 car garage!!
