Backyard experiments haven't been too conducive lately.

Oh! Mike! What abuse and indignity you were subjected to! My heart goes out to you. I grew up in a home where mustard plasters were never mentioned--

Yes, the poor thing did suffer with those plasters. My mother did that to me once, but with Vicks. Never let her do it a 2nd time! So she smeared the Vicks on my upper lip!! Yuck!! It's not that I didn't like the smell, it was greasy! So when I had kids I'd open the jar and just have them sniff it. (didn't want them feeling like they were being tortured for being sick!)

One of the best ways to prop up a toddler to sleep is for Mom Dad or grandparent to sleep in the recliner with the lil one on your chest. Notice I said toddler not infant.

You can also give them some mint infused water to soothe the cough. Temp doesn't matter warm is better if he will drink it though. No need to sweeten it either.

Easy to make get some fresh mint leaves from the produce section, chop them, pour boiling water on them let steep a few minutes, then strain out the leaves. Keep the infused water in sealed container in the fridge, and serve at whatever temp he likes it best.

That is not the criteria by which you are judged to be an official member of the back porch.....and you can believe me when I say.....misbehave and I've got something much scarier than a frying pan.........;)

Miles is 15 months old. Is that too young? It's still available in drug stores? I'd think Rachel would ask the pediatrician about it, but if he says no I'm going to tell her to ask why not. Some docs say no to things, but I'd want to know why not. If they have a good reason I'll listen...

The Similasan Kids Cold & Mucus Relief was bought from Kmart, in the cough syrup section, and I started using it on my GD when she was 1ish. I had been using a lemon and honey recipe (from Google), but it was only to soothe her cough a bit, and didn't do any real decongesting, which is the important part of keeping the ear infections away. The stuff I used for my son was Walmart brand Tussin CF or PE or something like that, he was 5 or 6 I think. He's my youngest and is 14 now. I really couldn't believe that it could work, but when you have a kid that is miserable with recurrent ear infections, you try just about anything. :)

I agree, Janet. I'd want to know why I should let my baby be miserable & do nothing to help him when if I felt that bad I'd be taking something for it. He needs to explain & recommend an otc solution or I'd be finding another Dr.

My mom was a huge Mentholatum fan. It's getting a little hard to find but, I like it a lot better than Vicks. Mom would rub it on our chest and then cover it with an almost hot washcloth. Worked great but, I don't know how young you can go with that. :)

Haven't heard of Mentholatum in years! Mom never used it on us. Guess she figured the Vicks plaster was bad enough!

@Janet H and @MikeE3, I hope Miles is feeling better. Little ones are so precious!

Thank you all for the warm wishes for tomorrow. I was able to get almost everything accomplished, today - except for the few things my local doctor "forgot" to do. Oh well; it is what it is. Now I just have to figure out how to get through downtown Baltimore without getting lost or yelling at some poor unsuspecting dolt who is driving too slowly!

Thanks. I think it's almost worse for us watching him be sick! He's a trooper though and we're just grateful eh doesn't have anything more serious.

You will definitely be on my mind tomorrow. Prayers are going with you!

Children's Benydril? Guaranteed to get him sleeping too. :);)

That's a pretty common medicine for kids. I'm thinking he's too young for it or the doc would have suggested using it unless the doc is a dolt. At this age I'd want to be pretty careful. He's only 15 months old.

Paragoric! Man, haven't heard of that in ages. My Mom would give that to us for a bad case of the runs. Tasted awful, but worked!
My mom gave it to us if we got too hyper. I remember the first time she gave it to me. Knocked me out. I was 9. I suspect she'd been dosing my whiney hyper little sister while I was at school for several years since she had the bottle handy. I think it tastes & smells like licorice. I still don't like licorice!

but in the meantime it's hard to see the coughing wake him up and he cries because he just wants to sleep!
awwwwww I know that's so hard on y'all and the parents.

First problem... dem's instant grits... no self respectin' Southerner would ever get caught wit dat box in dere house... And I ain't got no fryin' pan. But I do got a shotgun! ;)
thanks. Thought I had quoted that, but reckin not.

I have an appointment in June. (ducks and runs)
grrrrrrrr Why so long???

I've been known to scream at the devil in the shower, beat the stuffing out of pillows, and scream at the top of my lungs in the shower. It all works wonders!
Jup!!! I've cussed people out, said things I would have liked to have said at the time, but refrained for various reasons. The dog might think yur nuts, but it's important to get it out.

Oh and this Sweet Nitre was always administered. I couldn't stand it ... it was so sickening sweet. To this day I have no idea what it is other than really-really yucky.

never heard of that one. apparently it's mostly alcohol prolly with sugar added.

I'd think Rachel would ask the pediatrician about it, but if he says no I'm going to tell her to ask why not. Some docs say no to things, but I'd want to know why not. If they have a good reason I'll listen...
Good! Always important to question! I like mms's suggestion of the stuff. Would like to know if the doc has ever heard of it. Maybe write down the ingredients and take em in. Active and inactive. Daniel had a bad problem with projectile vomiting after his formula. I had a great pediatrician at the time. She gave me a recipe from her files for evaporated milk, water and karo syrup. The syrup was to keep the milk from constipating them. When I asked, she said what do you think folks used before they made formula if they couldn't nurse til time to put em on cow's milk?? Made sense. She did have me get some polyviflor vitamins with iron and put on dropper a day in one of the bottles. I had nursed, and he did fine on that, but at one point he had to be on nothing but pedialyte for 3 days and after that he just wanted the bottle.

Backyard experiments haven't been too conducive lately.
I have faith in ya!! Bet bells could help! Subway too....he's great with cars!

Children's Benydril? Guaranteed to get him sleeping too. :);)
They usually don't recommend it for kids under two

You can borrow it when I'm done :)
You know I've been prayin bout tomorrow hun.
