As long as it also throws the neutral.
Nope, needs to throw the mains in. Switches the bus from the mains to the generator and isolates the outside mains to prevent feedback onto the local grid. That's why you should never make up a generator extension cord with a plug on both ends. Some folks put a dryer/stove 220 plug on the non generator end to back feed into the panel but if you don't open the main breaker when you do that you could easily kill the utility worker who thinks the circuit he is working on is dead. The power companies (and every building code in the country) definately prefer a lockout type switch for just that reason. Reliance makes a reasonably cheap 6 or 10 circuit transfer switch for that purpose. I will install one as soon as I can if I decide not to go with the whole house backup gunny.

Saccharin.
Nah, don't care for the taste. I don't believe it causes cancer or anything like that. It's just the taste, or should I say aftertaste. The study that determined that saccharin caused cancer was grossly flawed. They were feeding those rats the equivalent of a softball size lump of saccharin a day. That amount of just about anything would adversely affect anyone/any critter. Most other artificial sweetners have an aftertaste too. At least for me.

Yeah if you drink 100 bottles of diet soda a day for a year you have a slight chance of developing cancer. Provided you don't drown yourself first.

Aftertaste never bothered me but seems it's the safest of all of them.

Reason it was initially banned... patent ran out. So anyone could make it dirt cheap. And the other drug companies had a pile of sweeteners to market. But they couldn't with saccharin in the way. So... eliminate the competition.

Reeely strange that big pharma wood be dis-honest, huh?

It has to throw the mains AND neutral.

And I don't do electrical work beyond the basics ... so I'd need a contractor to do any hookups of the generator into our 'grid.
If you do get a Gen. just always remember to shut off the "Main" in your breaker box when your running it! If the "main" is left on the Gen. will back feed the power lines and might just kill the poor Guy fixing the lines. Any time I ever wired in a Gen. hook up I put a big bold tag on it saying " TURN OFF The MAIN BREAKER!!!!" Just gotta add more, Do Not run anything off a gen. on a cord smaller then 12 ga. if your not sure remember the higher the cord gauge (ga) the smaller the wire and the less amperage carrying ability. And run as short a cord as you can . If in doubt call a local Electrician and ask questions. it beats burning something up trying to run it on to small a cord. And for your life put the gen. outside away from windows! unless you wan to die from carbon monoxide poisoning. I really can't stress Gen. safety enough.

Yeh, I guess although I've see plenty of transfer switches that don't. The neutral is grounded a gazillion times in a distribution system in a normal city. Heck, I think it's grounded a couple of time before it gets to the pole from your house. The neutral bus is bonded to ground in your fuse panel.

They have panels that have interlocks on them that prevent the feed from the genny from being turned on if the main is not off. The national electric code requires it if a proper transfer switch is not used. New code post 2005 anyway. Maybe even earlier than that. Most cities just rubber stamp the National code, maybe adding a few particulars that apply to their area.

Does anybody know if being in this Florida heat will prevent him from getting that "second" coat this winter so he won't shed so darn bad next spring? He sheds enough in one day to make a kitten! As my mom would say when as kids we'd ask her "what for"..." Cat fur to make a pair of kitten britches.";)
