A devious side of Ma Nature; no clue to it's presence 'til ya do a 180°+ do-si-do! Been dere, dun dat several times... once on a motorcycle...

No stranger to black ice here. But there is a clue or two. Near or below freezing. Nope, doesn't have to be below freezing, if it's been cold enough long enough for the surface to be frozen.

Road is shiney but tires make no sound... like the sound tires make on wet roads....

360 on a scoot is absolutely no fun!!

Yuk. Sounds like an ice storm. East Texas gets those often. Our warm & humid Gulf air goes up & hits a Canadian cold front & it's black ice on all the roads for days. No fun unless you can stay home. We get ice on bridges & overpasses maybe every 2-3 years. It's been this way my whole life. I can remember being 4 & seeing snow for the first time while I was visiting my grandparents in Decatur, TX. I didn't see it again until I was 8 & we moved to Columbia, MO. I've only been in snow 5 or 6 times in my life. Ice is another matter.

They had one here just before we moved here by a couple of years. It is just known as Ice Storm. It was really bad there was like 5" of ice on everything. Power here went out for over 2 weeks. I think it was later in the Winter tho because the temps stayed below freezing for quite a while.

Well went to the VA and picked up my streaming device for TV. It's quite a little gadget. Ginny doesn't like the TV up at all in the bedroom and she can hear it but I can't even with my aids in. This plugs into the TV and I can set it to what ever suits me, that way if I have any trouble sleeping which I have on occasion after about 3am I can turn on the tv and won't even wake her up, plus it remembers where you like it.
She has her procedure in the morning, so she is probably going to be up most of the night. They gave her a different stuff so she doesn't have to drink so much of it since she has the same operation as me and it doesn't take so much to get er dun. The VA would make no exceptions for me, so I tried to drink the whole gallon and my body retained it after I was cleaned out. Thought I was going to have a heart attack so did they when I went in the next day because I couldn't breathe right. I thought they were going to put me in the hospital. Some test was up so high they wouldn't let me leave right away and finally did an EKG and things looked somewhat normal for me. Took about 3 or 4 days before I was back to normal. Plus they used Fentanyl instead of Propephal which I had a pretty high tolerance to since I was on it and they couldn't give me anymore cause my BP which is already low got really low. I was a mess, had to hang on to someone to be able to walk. What an experience. That Propephal or what ever its called they used on me at the civilian place and when you woke up you were pretty close to normal. Moocho better

Freezing rain, which turns to ice as soon as it hits the ground is a common phenomena in NJ. There were a number of times I had to stay overnight in the casino because AC is an island. I, like most employees, lived on the mainland and the bridges weren't traversable.
I've managed to not be stuck anywhere due to weather, other than home. There have been times that I couldn't get out of my driveway or that everything between home & work, church, grocery store was blocked by ice or high water. Stinks when your boss drives a raised 4wd dually & offers to come get you.

I got a Sennhhieser wireless RF headset when I got my new tv. I mounted it on the wall of the adjoining apartment. One of the Managers has now moved thete. I was worried about keeping someone awake since I watch tv till 2 am sometimes. Lots of noisy shows. Game of Thrones, & FTWD ended, & TWD started. Lots of snarling & gunfire.
I really like this headset. I can mute the sound on the tv & still hear through the headset j adjust the sound on it. But if I take off the headset it's quiet. I can go into the kitchen & still hear it. The batteries last for hours & recharge when I set it on it's stand.

Well, you had to land somewhere. What did you land on if not pavement?

My left foot, then both feet. As others may attest to, if you're lucky, it's all in slo-mo. Note, I did say hit vs.a ten toe landin'...

Snow, black ice ... yep ... been caught in my fair share of that stuff.

Story 1: Stuck on a limited access highway when the road was slick with black ice. Major, major traffic jam ... heat went out in the car. Took 2 hrs to get to the next exit 2 miles away to get off and sit out the traffic in a bar. Nope drinking hot soup, not drinking booze.

Story 2: My normal compute home from work was 30-35 minutes. Heavy snow all afternoon, roads a mess and still snowing when work lets out. Four hours after leaving work I'm within 1/2 mile of home and all routes to the house from there are blocked by police and or fire trucks as the road from there to home were not passable. Hang out at a local gas station waiting for the plows to show up. Another hour or so then I'm home in time to see myself on TV ... while waiting it out, a TV crew came along and interviewed me about driving conditions.

Around here, under the trees as well. And, uh, we do have a lot of those!

Frequently in black ice times car meets pole event will cause a fault on the line, and the generators feeding that part of the grid get automatically disconnected from the grid. The generators then, from the instant loss of load, speed up and likely shut down on an over speed trip.

Call the plant electrician, to check it out, restart, and reconnect to the grid when the system dispatcher says it's safe.

Usually just after 2AM on a saturday. Or Christmas Eve. Or during the height of the ice storm itself.

Driven way too many dark of night miles on black ice to get the power to the people, and sure don't miss that part of the job!

Yep we are pretty stocked up and if it gets really bad we have a pretty good sized grocery store about 1/2 mile away and AWD. I wasn't even going to put the snows on the Ford because I just figured I wouldn't use it but Gdaughter and Gson are coming for 3 days ending on the 23rd of Dec so instead of making them rent a car I will just put them on if necessary. She likes to go visit as many friends as she can in a couple days and she likes it when Ginny makes Turkey dinner so she will do that. Just have to see what the weather has in store. It's a little over $100 to do it at a good place and not going back to the cheap place that ruined 2 tires and lost us a hubcap last spring. Saved 40 bucks but cost me $145 so far haven't had to replace one of the tires but it has a slow leak, I'm sure it is a bead leak but I think a can of Fix a Flat will seal it, I won't put that in till after I get through Dec and if I have to change them I will let them take another crack at it. Don't want to pay another 100 for another tire.
