Good morning, Porchers!

Have been preoccupied with several things going on and my computer time has been quite limited. Hopefully, that will change, but in the meantime, wanted to come and say 'hi' to my Porch Peeps!
Hoping everyone is doing well, and enjoying their vape!

Yabutt the problem is...
In 1929, the music stopped, the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began. It took eight years from the start of the boom to the bust. Subsequent investigations revealed the extent of the fraud that preceded the crash. In 1933, Congress passed Glass-Steagall in response to the abuses. Banks would be allowed to take deposits and make loans. Brokers would be allowed to underwrite and sell securities. But no firm could do both due to conflicts of interest and risks to insured deposits. From 1933 to 1999, there were very few large bank failures and no financial panics comparable to the Panic of 2008. The law worked exactly as intended.
In 1999, Democrats led by President Bill Clinton and Republicans led by Sen. Phil Gramm joined forces to repeal Glass-Steagall at the behest of the big banks. What happened over the next eight years was an almost exact replay of the Roaring Twenties. Once again, banks originated fraudulent loans and once again they sold them to their customers in the form of securities. Credit card interest rates capped at 17% suddenly rose to over 30% The bubble peaked in 2007 and collapsed in 2008. The hard-earned knowledge of 1933 had been lost in the arrogance of 1999. And Bill and Hill joined the 1%.

So, Bill has an incredible amount of charisma, a silver tongue, and is really likable. All the requirements of a con man. How is Hillary going to be any different?

On the udder hand the alternative is... better?

prior to retirement, i worked for an anti-piracy company, as Director of Software Engineering. My job was to catch pirated content providers, and i was fairly good at it. We were hired by all the movie/TV content providers mainly.

currently, it is illegal to stream copyrighted content-- as a provider.

in the U.S. currently, streaming illegally-sourced content as a consumer is perfectly legal. it is considered "fair use".

this assumes you don't use any peer-to-peer protocols (which require you to actually be a provider of bits and pieces, making you a de facto provider)

so, currently using Kodi (or whatever- even a browser) to access any content is perfectly legal in the U.S., whether it is provided legally or not.

Congress is reportedly considering passing a law to make it illegal to consume illegally provided content, but they have not done so yet, AFAIK.

And if they do pass the law, companies like the one i used to work for will still be unable to detect streamers. There is no technology that will do that.

However, the movie and TV companies who used to hire companies like mine will throw tons of money at internet service providers, who will be able to detect streaming consumers.

So, in my case, after the law passes and goes into effect, i'll expect a notification from Comcast, after which i'll reconsider my Kodi/browsing use.

Shades of grey, Willie. Shades of grey :)

Dennis, with all due respect (and you know I'm aware of your background) .. If you drill down, you'll find :: Many of KODI’s unofficial add-ons use peer-to-peer streaming that does not hide your IP as you are both downloading the file you are streaming and sharing it with other users who want to watch the same show as you watch the show. Often users of these 3rd party unofficial add-ons are unaware they re-sharing the file in a similar way to how Bittorrent works. So, yes, in many cases, users are peer-to-peer protocols .. and will have a "seed" residing within their machine ..

Folks have been getting Copyright Infringement letters over the last year, primarily from Comcast ..

Until now there haven’t been any reports of KODI users being hit with lawsuits or copyright claims that are so popular with Bittorrent users. Yet it is possible to track users of peer-to-peer streaming services similarly to how Bittorrent users are tracked .. this is no different than the infancy of the fight initiated over MP3 sharing and subsequent lawsuits and fines against the consumers ..

I'm not slamming KODI, it's a great interface .. However, unofficial add-ons are developed by people who have no association with the KODI core team, but they write add-ons that are intended to work on KODI ..

This is why I simply recommended anyone that uses the interface outside the norm of what it was made for originally (an interface for legal streaming and storage of owned content), seriously consider a VPN .. and I'll add :: The use of a dedicated PC for this purpose is a good idea, since when connecting peer-to-peer the vulnerability of the PC is also much more easily compromised ..

Lastly, Cisco has the tech ::

Cisco Develops Technology to Fight Pirate TV Streaming

(OK, OK, I know .. but I'm doing my best to not weigh in on the Political Rhetoric that has been flying around here .. funny, since when I, in the past, dipped my toes into that water, they were stomped on .. I guess some just get a Free Pass .. although, if you like, I am more than happy to weigh in .. :))

Unc, contrary to popular belief here, I'm certainly not a raving guru.
That being said, torrents are a whole 'nother ball o' wax. To use those you MUST download them first. That is strictly illegal. (well, believe it or not... not in Canada. But I digress)
Now streaming... you really aren't downloading anything, per se. That's where the gray area comes in. Can you download from kodi? Sure. Thing is... if it's always there... why would you?
Now a fairly hi speed connection is required. Mebbe 16ish Mbps.
If you decide to go the VPN route... highly unlikely (IMHO) that speed will work for you. VPN slows transfers dramatically.
As far as a dedicated PC... well, it's internet. So a kodi box on your tv would likely be safest but on the other hand... it's internet. Gotta come thru your modem.

So will kodi always be there? Who knows. No one imagined napster going away either. ;)

So-- I have joined a matchmaking site. Been sending smiles and building my profile. Got about three Cali nibbles. Six months costs $60, but I want to save up money to get to California. I guess I will go ahead and dive.

Oh boy! I used to not have a television because I wasn't interested and didn't really have space for one. Now I don't have one because I would never, ever figure out how to make it work.

Go for it Willie, I put my opinion out there. I don't like either one but I dislike Hillary more. But it's like on a FB post from this towns TV station that the investigation by the FBI has been re opened, one lady said she doesn't care if she emailed Satan she would still vote for her. That's the mindset out there.

in 2006 i learnt of Basel II,, and prepared, nobody believed me it was important,,, banks now have Basel III and still cant/dont comply to Basel II.

back in 2000 traders were ready to hang everyone on wallstreet/banks from nearest trees for trading against them, naked shorting and front running,,, they forgot all about it when 911 happened........911 actually hit quite a few of the guilty.,,, but too many non guilties were killed too. (airplanes and firefighters)

Gary ::

How Does BitTorrent Work?

You can spin KODI anyway you like, and like I said, I'm not against the software .. I'm simply passing on what I know from working with the software after you recommended it so highly .. you don't know when it's working off a peer-to-peer / torrent, but I can tell you that it is in many cases .. I personally found clear evidence on my own, dedicated HTPC, which is all I can say ..

And, a good VPN does not always slow your traffic down substantially .. it depends on how far your signal has to travel and amount of bandwidth on a server. Distance = lag plus server load equals how much speed you can actually get, which holds true in all cases, VPN or not ..

I would rather have a few less Mbps than not, as it relates to this type of activity .. at home, I get a consistent 100Mbps, so a VPN taking a few is inconsequential ..

I know you love it, and that's great .. we can do Siskel and Ebert as long as you like .. it's not going to change the reality .. ;)

Pat, I don't know if I can count on you as having a Brothers Back .. I suspect you would .. ;) .. all I will say is, I plan on selling all stock I own in any Company a few days prior to the Election, especially if the Polls are really tight, because if a Someone That Shall Not Be Named wins, Wall Street is going to look like the Exchange did after Brexit, and the Dollar value will be going the same way .. you read it here first .. :)
