I hate what they have done to so many breeds. Not just Irish Setters and Goldens (when they brought in the light colored Goldens the temperaments went down the tubes), but Labs and several others. German Shepherds? They could no more herd all day, what they were originally bred to do, they couldn't walk out of a paper bag! You will notice most service/police shepherds have straighter backs and their rear legs under them. Heck, many are turning to Belgian Malinois, the short haired variety of my Tervuren. More drive and healthier. Ah heck, don't get me started...

There are good breeders out there, breeding dogs with structure and temperaments that fit what they were originally intended to do. If you ever want a Golden, find your self a nice red/golden one and any purebred dog make sure the breeder does all health clearances. If they can't show you the test results, run!

I love senior dogs. Most are settled, know the rules, have manners and are very loving. Like humans, getting older usually means some health issues like arthritis and, unfortunately, possible cancer, diabetes, overweight. I keep my dogs lean - you can feel their ribs if you rub their sides. Not obvious but you can feel them.. About the worst disservice people do to pets is to let them get fat.

Ok, so yes, there are good breeders out there, but there are also not so good ones and bad ones. Nothing wrong with a nice mixed breed! Helps if you can figure out at least one of the breeds involved because you will have a better idea of temperament, energy level, and size!

What made all of us a the clinic cringe was the pet owners who decided they just had to breed their dog just once so the children could "experience the miracle of birth" thereby adding to the millions of dogs that need homes. Arghhhh!
I need a "Love that comment" button in this forum.

Just speaking again for my friend....pups going out as pets had their health clearances and were spayed or neutered before leaving her home. Pups being sold to another breeder, even though a trusted one, went with a contract limiting them. She did NOT make money with her passion for her dogs, and when the casino she had held a good position in closed, she could no longer continue to support it. Her remaining dogs except for one she kept for herself, were spayed, neutered and placed in good homes. I might add, on her behalf, that she was very involved in rescue programs, and her daughter, who worked for a "no kill" shelter was constantly bringing home cats.... Going to Betsy's home was always a fun event...;)

I agree, nothing wrong with a mixed breed.....just hate to see all breeders lumped into one category and thrown under the bus...;)

I agree with you. The pure bred dog breeding business is no different than so many others. There are good ones and bad ones.

So true! Whenever any of our clients were thinking about getting a pure pred dog, we always advised them to ask for health checks, particularly hip dysplasia OFA ratings on the parents. Of course that raises the cost of a puppy but in the long run it saves the dogs suffering and the owners money on vet bills. If the breeder didnt do health checks we told them they should go to a different breeder.

He's a boy and his name is Bodhi. He came from a ranching family south of us in San Luis Obispo. Ironically, he was the ugliest puppy I've ever seen; when I brought him home my wife took one look and said, "Are you sure he's pure Aussie?". :( She was not a fan. Of course, being a very smart dog, he cried that night until my wife got up and held him. He snuggled under her neck and promptly fell asleep.:hubba: He was immediately elevated to "The Most Perfect Dog in the World" status. Come to think of it, she kept me for pretty much the same reason...
He is gorgeous! I don't have a pet of my own for the moment. I do pet sitting for a few friends, so i get my pupper snuggles that way.

Every pet I've had the pleasure of giving a home has been a rescue!! My wife and I are currently down to 1 dog and 3 cats, down from a max of 3 dogs and 7 cats!! The 2 dogs we had before this one had seizure issues but we kept them medicated and as comfortable as possible through 13 years. The both passed witching 6 months of one another and it was devastating for both of us. It took almost 2 years before I even entertained the thought of another dog!! Our little joy now, Sweet Maple Moon, my avitar pic will be three this month! She is some sort of boarder collie mix (whatever jumped over the fence last) and is way too smart for us!!

Rescue groups are the best!!
What a pretty girl! Yeah, rescues rule!

Sounds like your friend was one of the good, responsible breeders. :thumb:

Another thing about good breeders - they will always take their own bred dogs back should something happen with the home they are placed with. Or have arrangements for the dog to be cared for. All my Tervs had/have in the contract that if for some reason I can't keep them I must contact them (the breeder) first before I do anything.
