openSUSE 42.1 - empty desktop - all things working as they should.

@CasketWeaver

Weaver, I'm interested in playing with Linux again in the near future. I have limited experience with the Ubuntu, Mint, and Puppy distros, but it's been quite a while since.

...should have some 'extra' time soon - my daughter is leaving for college this Friday, my son is gone from 7a to 7p on his new job (hour commute one-way, and he goes to the gym for an hour/day), my wife is often working overtime these days 'cause they are short-staffed in her office right now, and I've sworn off wasting any more time reading/viewing ANY news and current events on ALL devices - to include smartphone, tablet, laptop, and TV... period!

(I can see a bad case of 'empty nest syndrome' oncoming)

So - I plan to download the openSUSE ISO and burn it to a DVD or USB stick. My current laptop will boot from either one -or- I may eventually make a dual boot or VM on my Win7 laptop.

After seeing your post this morning, I've done a little research (very little so far), and have one question for ya: Is this the Distro I should DL? I don't yet understand the differences between all the variations, and plan to start the DL on one of my little-used home PCs when I leave for work one morning soon. TIA

Oh wow........bittersweet. Exciting and heartbreaking at the same time! My son has an hour commute each way to work also, but he doesn't go to the gym. He works at least 13 hrs a day as a restaurant manager, sometimes 15 hrs, so he comes home and passes out!

Hey Debadoodles!

Yes'm... bittersweet it is. On one hand, I'll miss her terribly and worry about her being in the "big city" without me and her Mom. On the other hand, the last several weeks of prep have been hectic, chaotic, and has 'bout worn me slap out! I'll be glad to get some rest and get back to some semblance of normality... also, $20 here, 50 there, 550 for a new laptop, 400+ to fix-up and tune-up her car is 'bout to "dollar me to death!" - not to mention tuition, dorm fee, lunch ticket, etc. etc. etc... whew! :) Hopefully, the spending spree will wind down some soon.

hey I gotta question for ya. I recently got a wireless printer, went through the wireless set up wizard......it found our wifi, but it won't accept the pw. I know I'm entering the correct pw that we use to hook computers etc to the wifi. Is this more likely an issue that I need to contact the internet provider for.......or do you think it's something hinky with the printer and I need to contact HP?

The printer has it's own password, that's probably what it's asking for. You'll have to find it either in the printer docs (or driver CD), or play with the printer menus 'til you find it - look under the WiFi section. I ran into the same problem with a customer's printer just a few weeks ago. Once I found it, I wrote it on a piece of masking tape and put it on front of the printer - 'cause you'll need it for anyone or any other device that wants to connect. HTH

printer docs, you mean the manual?

Yes'm... most, if not all, devices these days come with scant printed documentation, usually just a 'quick start' guide... the detailed docs are normally in a PDF file on the CD.

Debadoo, now that I think about it, the manual ~might~ not have the password for that specific printer, but could point you to where it is in the menus... likely, the pwd is different on each printer... it'll be something arcane, like 34D5F6LF29 or some such...

thanks hun. Apparently it's not pulling up in Adobe, cuz there is no search feature, but I'll check in the printer menu.

With the storms down here, the tower for our phones went down. Could not get on the internet all last night. Working again this morning, some catching up to do.

That's all for now!
yuck. Glad it's back on. Are the storms over, or still ongoing?

Hey everyone...my last post was supposed to be a funny pic:eek:...when I saw that it didn't work I got an attitude and shut down the pc. I've had an attitude lately anyway, come to think of it.
Hmmm... I might be heading towards a rant....

yes, I am....

I think I'm going to try to sue the Ortho Dr. for a messed up job on my hip. I fortuitously saw a commercial the other day about a lawyer that does such things...and I've been going crazy about this damn cracked pelvic bone and how in the world it could've happened and how far set back I've gone because of it.Now I'm beginning to think that it could've happened during the surgery, to be so extensive a crack. I really don't think that a small tilted-to-the-right fall could've cracked my left pelvic bone almost all the way thru. It's been about a month now and I see no improvement, so basically I'm almost as bad off as I was the few weeks after the hip surgery...had to go back to the walkers to get around and such, had to up the pain meds usage daily.....and I haven't been able to PLAY OUTSIDE!:grr:

It won't cost me anything to sue them and just maybe someone will take me seriously and actually do something about it.

I went to my Dr. yesterday but I forgot that he only takes patients in the morning, so I had to deal with a cold-blooded arrogant know-it-all woman who rushed me. So today I made another app. for tomorrow morn. with my regular Dr. ( whom I trust completely and he doesn't rush me and treats me like a real human being..not just a body..he's the one that insisted on xrays and found that I needed total hip replacement and that my hip was bone-on bone)

ok...now I feel better:)

Now I'm going to this lawyers website and check into it...see
y'all later....

For those especially in Fl., please try to stay dry and, especially, safe!

Oopsydaisy.. it was the LEFTside that I fell on and the RIGHT pelvic bone...:blush:

Good to see you posting, even if it is a rant. Was beginning to worry about you.
