Mama crochets all the time. Everything from afghans to little doilies. She's made some really cool things like that! In theory, cross stitch seems simple... then ya watch someone do it, and reality kicks in. I'm sure that one would take me a lot of practice.
they have some aida with the patterns printed on it which is pretty simple. Counted cross stitch needs a lot more concentration.

Woo-Hoo! Made it before Noon (our time anyway) :D
GOOD MORNING PORCHERS!!!

Wow Legs! That boat trip from Everett to Juneau sounds harrowing! You were lucky to get off with only two near death experiences! I had a buddy that used his 18 ft. skiff w/hand tiller outboard to go from Whittier to Yakutat with three drums of fuel and that was quite a story too!
We're too far South to bag any Bison but sure would love to. Those beasts are DELICIOUS!!! (Darned foggy here this morning and Fairbanks got their first frost of the season!)

Iffy, it looks like you weathered the storm fairly well. I'm sure glad! I was afraid you'd be surfing to Mississippi! Happy to see you were able to throw out an anchor!

You are supposed to Boldly Go, I don't think this was very bold. So I'm fixing it for ya, now it's bold.
HILLARIOUS!!! And thank you kad. ;) :)

Roto, repeat after me, "NO!, Hut Uh! NEWP! NOT GUNNA DEW IT!" In all honesty, I truly admire you. You're one tough cookie! As Janet said, you know better than anybody what your limits are. We still worry and care though. ;)

Deb & Kazz, yuppers, that sewing and crafting stuff are good skills to master. Still very much alive "up here". I can't do it myself but my lovely bride is pretty handy with the ol' knitting needles and cross stitch. How youz guyz doin' today?

Kaepernick? Ya he's got the right. It's still WRONG! I've heard that he is actually fairly philanthropic and that's wonderful. Perhaps he could do it on his own dime instead of on the team and fan's. As Shaq recently said, "Why now? Where was his concern last season or the season before?" IMHO, he's doing more to "stir the pot" than to help anyone. Yup, he has every right to cut off his own nose to spite his face. That's always proven to be VERY productive! ;)

In other news, there was a 5.6 "earthquake" in N. Korea this morning. So ya, I'm feeling very "secure" and relaxed..........

 V V

My mother and her mother did that stuff - we still are using some things that were made 40 - 60 years ago...

Jup I've always done a lot of craft stuff. Doin pretty good here, you? Yipes, frost already.... can't handle that!

Scott (Sterno) got bounced around the other day by a 5. sumpthin quake near OKC. He was at the epicenter, but his whole apt was shaking. He'd just bought a new TV recently and it was weeble wobblin real bad.

that is so kewl! My grandmother had a quilt put up for me that she had made, but when died it mysteriously vanished. I asked everyone, no one knew anything about it. That crushed me.

Yeah, I've seen those! That's probably what I'd have to start with... I lose count easily.

Doin' alright, man. My Mama and my MawMaw both taught me how to sew, iron, make biscuits... basic stuff. Got me to understand that it was an important skill for a young man to know. Later on, I sewed all of my own patches on my military uniforms and can still mend things that aren't bad enough to toss out. ;)

Same here! My Bride and I sleep under a quilt that my MawMaw made for us when we got married, and I have another one that mostly stays on the quilt rack at the foot of the bed that was my great grandmother's. We occasionally use it when we snuggle up on the couch in front of the fireplace in the winter, but mostly it just stays on the rack and is cherished for the history that it represents. :)

There is no real reason to crochet lace today. Go to antique stores and sort through piles and piles of old doilies. I have a collection of twelve framed on my livingroom wall. I have shared them in the HO.

Here are some pix:

Arthritis of the thumb (there is a fancy name for the particular problem) forced me to this alternative, and I am glad it did.

those are lovely 3mg!! But I always appreciate when folks wanna learn how to do things. too many of those old skills are being lost.

Jup I did the same with my son. Taught him to cook, iron, sew etc. Now I can't sew with a machine worth a lick.....and not great at hand sewing either. Mostly cuz I don't enjoy it so don't have the patience to fool with it. So teaching him was two fold, he could sew on his patches and I didn't have to do it. He is very OCD about all that stuff, so it's good he did it.....he wouldn't have liked the way I woulda did it.

Very nice, and very true... Framing them like that is a great idea! I have a few of Mama's that I should do that with. Most of them are on end tables and on top of curio cabinets right now, but framing them would make them much more visible!

Yepper, dodged 'nother tropical bullet. Here, it was more like a regular summer pattern afternoon blowup. Although, we did get 'bout 16" of liquid sunshine.

Pretty much my take on 'it' also...

My Mom was an excellent seamstress; plus she crocheted and knitted. It was her relaxation/recreation. We have many cherished handmade physical memories that we can pass on...[/QUOTE]

And keep them protected from dust and dirt and snags.

Hahahahaha! I was the same way... you could almost cut yourself on my creases! :D I still keep a bottle of starch in my laundry room... and not that aerosol can crap, either. The stuff that (your s'posed to dilute) comes in a plastic bottle, and you put it in your own spray bottle.

Based on my proclivity and alliance to Women's Volleyball / Women's Ice Skating, and having only so much time to devote to Sports, I limit my Viewing to those Most Excellent events .. thusly, I have no real basis of knowledge on "Kaepernick" .. other than a brief news snippet here and there .. (of course, there have been those here that have proclaimed "If I wanted to watch the News, I'd turn on the TV" .. so there is that) ..

What I do know is, he has obviously accomplished his goal, in that he's getting traction, good or bad ..

The right to Peaceful Protest carries a double edge sword .. a fine line is walked between intent and Public Perception .. the chips can fall on either side of the equation .. the quiet and Peaceful Protest Mr Kaepernick has initiated is apparently working, in that others have begun joining in, from what Mr/Ms Google says, anyway .. bringing attention to the oppression of minorities in this country is Democracy in Action, IMO .. I have also discovered he is donating the first One Million of his salary to help in Minority Communities as well as profits from his jersey sales, which, apparently, have skyrocketed .. this bears resemblance to "Putting Your Money Where Your Mouth Is" ..

I suppose if Mr Kaepernick were in Russia or a member of the Scientology Community, he would be sent out immediately for re-education .. ;)

On the flip side, I am following with great interest the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe / Dakota Access pipeline Protests ..

Vote Early, Vote Often .. ;)

Yup, you are half-way there. You also need dishsoap or woolite, cardboard, straight pins. Mine are backed with dark brown velvet to keep them from slipping in the frame. Goodwill frames.

The wifey and I came down to Waco today for a mini vacation, night in a hotel, went to the Texas Ranger museum, the Dr Pepper museum, the place that belongs to those fixer upper people, magnolia market, did a little antiquing. Dinner at buzzard billy's

Sent from a dark, twisted corner of the back porch, covered in cobwebs and slightly damp.

Good for you! Now the trick is doing it more often! Doesn't have to be expensive, just getting away is great. What you need is the equivalent of Iffy's office. Got a park (especially with some water) or a nice library or coffee shop around you? Our daughter has a lovely dog park near her and the last time we were there thought that it would be a nice place to come even without a dog.

I think I still have a bunch of large scraps of micro-suede that I had for various projects. I imagine that might make a decent backing as well. And Goodwill frames are awesome! You can usually find some pretty nice ones for a dollar or two there or most any thrift store. :)

If you go to a craft store they have some small kits so you could try it. You might be surprised at how good it would turn out. Just make sure it's not something that you can see the reverse side!! Making that look decent takes practice!

Oops! I was talking about the sewing, not crocheting. I've never gotten the hang of crocheting unless it's supposed to be free form...
