You wouldn't believe how horribly tangled animals get in them
Jup I would. I worked with and studied marine mammals for many years, and that was a huge culprit for them. Plastic grocery/walmart bags, and those plastic 6 pack rings. Folks litter a lot in the ocean too.

You know it really was and I miss it still
I bet. I miss my brakeman friend, who would blow a lil tune on the whistle every time they went past where I lived, unless it was a time he knew I was at work. It was fun to hear.

Yep theres no such animal anymore. First the RR did away with 1 then in about a year the other one. 2 man crew and they tried to go to 1 but the Union put an end to that. That's what Amtrak runs with 1 man in the cab. Would've been a few accidents prevented if there had been 2 but money is more important.

He was on a freight train, but it's probably the same

That's just sad, but what is happening today. Sometimes I am glad I'm old...
Amen darlin!! I think about that quite a bit.

Yep that's what I'm talking about, no more brakemen. Used to be 2 when I hired out, no caboose, unless its on a local that does a lot of work at different industries they at least some get 1 brakeman to help with the work some don't. That's all I ever worked freight that is. Now just engineer and conductor.

The Durango/Silverton railroad still has a brakeman of every train. They also have a fireman, and on the way up to Silverton, boy does he shovel the coal.

I much preferred their old name - The Denver and Rio Grande Western. Some of those old names just had a kind of magic.

Train story from my childhood that brings back fond memories.

There was a dairy farm that had a small ice cream parlor next to the cow barn. Train tracks ran behind the building. Sometimes a freight train would come along; the engineer would stop, hop out, get an ice cream and get back on the train. Then train would move forward until the caboose was at the parlor and stop again so the brakeman could get one too. Those were the days of real ice cream and it was well worth the visit. We'd wander into the barn with our ice cream and check out the cows and calves but it was exciting to be there when the train stopped. Oh the simple joys of childhood.

awwwwwwww I love that! And JUP the simple joys of OUR childhoods. I think a lot about that too when I see all the electronic crap and fancy toys my gd gets. We had imaginations.... and made toys outta nuttin. Kids don't know how to do that these days. Well some do, but a lot of em don't.

Amen!!!

Yep we used to do the same thing at an ice cream parlor in Gold Bar, WA. The good old days. We used to try and stop at Skykomish, WA for breakfast if it was the right time of the day. Great breakfast. Hell we'd even stop at a Tavern in Osage, Wy and grab a half a rack. Those were the real good old days.

So true.

I am just west of Chicago, I grew up around here. It's so different. Metropolis, not my childhood. We drove out to see my grandparents house, where I have a lot of good childhood memories. The whole area is so different. 4 lane highways, industry, housing neighborhoods where there used to be farmland. Even my grandparent's little 2 bedroom house is gone. Replaced by an ugly 2 story habitat (house). It was kinda sad, but life goes on. At least the lake Grampa and I used to go fishing on and we skated on in the winter is still there, albeit surrounded by houses not woods. I guess they call this progress, but I call it ya can't go home.

Tomorrow will be good, though. Gonna go to my sister's, do laundry, and hang out. Looking forward to it!

Oh, and we did have the best Doberman National ever, $$$. A "new" vehicle is in my future! Off to Atlanta next.

And wahoooooooo so glad you had a profitable show!! yay on the "new" car!! Worry about you wanderin all over creation in what you have now. Especially by yourself. Am always much happier when it's you and hubby
