Jup what fran said. I've either hung em from a tree if handy, or on a pole, from my back deck.....but I tend to keep em higher usually rather than on the ground. You can buy hummingbird food that you mix with water, which is better for them than just sugar water supposedly, but I've also done just sugar water when that was all I had. I like to get the strawberry shaped feeders, since they're already Red, they do tend to be attracted to the color as well as the smell. I don't like putting food color in the sugar water so the red hanger is nice

They have hanging poles like the ones you use for hanging plants.
Thanks, Fran. I'll pop into Lowes, tomorrow. Somehow I thought there was an Art to Hummingbird feeders, but it sounds like something even I can manage! :)

Had a great time, last night at Deb's place. Connection was good, people were great. Damn, this is starting to turn in to a habit! :D Just need to ensure we don't neglect our other forum friends. It was nice meeting our friend Wolfenstark in person. I think it's always nice when another person we haven't actually met in person shows up. Whoever thought this whole idea up deserves a huge pat on the back. Since we seem to be limited to 10 people at a time I am going to look into different software solutions. The caveat being it has to be universally available, cross platform compatible and (the operative parameter) free. Does anybody know the limits of Skype? Also there is a program called "Go to Meeting" but, I don't think it's free because it's targeted at corporate collaboration and teleconferencing. Is this whole idea something I should pursue or are we happy with the 10 person limit?

My concern is that if there are more than 10 people it might get confusing with the voices cutting in and out. I'd go along with whatever people decide though.

We actually had to bring our hummer feeders in. We got a visit from a bear last night.

Sheesh! And I thought we had a problem with a raccoon! Don't know what happened to her, but she only seemed to come around for a little while. I thought it was the squirrels until I flipped on the light one night and saw her up on the railing. She just drank the hummer nectar, gorged herself on the birdseed and left.

Where's the best place to put a Hummingbird feeder?

Yep, I 2nd the suggestions - anywhere that you can see it easily. Both of ours are on the deck, one hanging from a chain and the other is hanging from a metal hook attached to the deck railing. They'll come around even if I'm standing right next to the feeder and have hovered right in front of my face while sitting on the deck. Curious little critters and they sure are quick!

All the above. Never use honey for hummers, it can be fatal. Sugar is fine :)

We hang ours high enough so our and the neighbor cats can't pounce, low enough to be easy to take down to clean and fill.

When I first got our feeders I did some research on the nectar. they said NEVER put food coloring into the nectar. 4 C water with 1 C sugar boiled for 1-3 minutes to kill any bacteria. I make a batch and store it in the fridge. Depending on how hot it is outside I'll change the nectar every 4-6 days. It's important not to let it sit and cook in the sun long enough for mold to grow. I flush out the old nectar, use a paper towel and vinegar to clean it out, rinse well with hot water, fill up with fresh nectar and hang it back up. Only takes a couple minutes for the whole process.

One of the surprising things I learned is that the nectar is only used for energy. They eat bugs for food.

Ah ... Hanging down from a chain. Even better! We have a screen porch with covered porches on either side, running the length of the house. How wonderful it would be to sit on the screen porch and see Hummingbirds! We love to watch the Osprey build their nest, and the Bald Eagles dive for fish - but we've never had Hummers. This will be fun!

EtA: Thanks, Janet. No food coloring; change often. Got it! (We have plenty of bugs :))

Off to bed. Goodnight, all. Have a good sleep!

sweet dreams birdy......

newp matt, they'll find something else
Had to ask. Sometimes if your really generous with the feed, suet and such some birds will stay instead of leaving in the wintertime. Then if you stop feeding them they'll die. At least that's what I've been told. Didn't want to take a chance and hurt the little guys. They really are beautiful and interesting.

Deb, How many showed up at your place tonight. I passed as I said earlier. Now getting ready to head up to bed. Last couple of nights haven't had any problems at all sleeping. Doree thought I had last night and let me sleep to almost noon today. It was OK by me.
