I normally never use the dishwasher, except as a drying rack for the dishes I wash by hand. But, it sure is nice to have when there's lots and lots of dishes (like for Thanksgiving dinner and such). You can't safely wash non-stick pans and such in them. But, it still helps take the edge off a huge volume of dishes.

Only thing is. Our dishwasher runs forever! That's a lot of electricity and water!

Yeah, sterile tomato sauce? It may be sterile. But, it's not clean.

Yeah they do run for a long time. But time your dishwashing some time. :) Now you don't put dishes in for the day and turn it on. You put dishes in for the week and turn it on. Only start it when it's full. If you don't, then washing by hand may be cheaper.

As far as dried sauce or whatever... that would be a sign you have lousy soap or really need a new dishwasher. Sometimes I think even our old one would take dried paint off! Still works but makes one heck of a humming racket.

If you want to spell correctly, you have flies in both locations. If you don't, you don't.

Actually I just corrupt (*) the original spelling from back in 1496 when the "A treatyse of fysshynge wyth an Angle" was written. A couple lines from that book;

"In Iuly take house spies & flyes yt breede in pismire hilles, the codworme & magots, vnto mychelmas, & if the water be clere, ye shall take fysshe when other take none, & from yt time forth do as ye do for ye roach, for com[m]o[n]ly it is sene yt their biting & baytes be lyke."

"Thyse ben the .xij. flyes wyth whyche ye shall angle to ye trought and grayllyng and dubbe lyke as ye shall now here me tell."

We replaced ours last year. Bought a Bosch for around 800 bucks. It's the worst dishwasher I have ever had. Gets everything clean just fine but doesn't dry them for anything. Always have to hand dry them before putting them away.

Summertime, summertime, sum, sum, summertime. I can't wait for summertime!

I just leave the door open and let them air dry. And always empty the bottom dishes first so if there's any water left on the top glasses it won't splash down on them.

That is a great idea about the dish cloths that Janet gave .

For anyone who bakes...saw a recipe yesterday for 3 ingredient banana bread.

Mash 3 really ripe bananas, place in a bowl, add 2 eggs and a box of cake mix and bake. I haven't tried it and cannot recommend it, but it sounds nice and easy. I would add nuts.

I think that would qualify for a dump cake. The other day I saw one where Ree Drummond dumped a can of pineapple and a can of cherries in a baking pan, sprinkled a box mix cake over it and put it in to bake. You can do any combination of fruit and cake. She claims this combination is delicious even though it sounds a bit strange. Bet if you looked up dump cakes you'd find a bunch like that. Great for a quick dessert.

Heh... Funny you should say that...
I once got snapped at by a professional fly-tie-guy... Um a guy who ties flys for a living.
He is the one who told me it was flys for fishing and flies for swatting.

I think at this point, it depends on who you talk to.

Kind of like saying dwarfs or dwarves.
You call a group of little people dwarves, they are likely to kick your assets for you.

I've always had trouble believing a machine could get dishes as clean as me and my little scrubby brush. I'll get over it. Everyone says I will love it and I'm sure I will. I was at my daughter's once and I started washing her dishes by hand and got yelled at. "Mom, put those in the dishwasher".

I also would make sure it was all clean before I put it in there........I've mostly had crappy apt dishwashers, but even when visiting others, I have yet to meet a dishwasher that would get dried egg yolk from between the tines of a fork! But the dishwasher saved me from having to stand there and rinse dishes, so it definitely saves time and my back. I used to wash em like normal with a sink full of soapy water......put em in the dishwasher still soapy and just not add dishwasher detergent. Which I do believe would save water but maybe not. Other times I just would scrub them with my scotch brite pad, toss em in there with dw detergent. As with many of you I've also opened it to let it dry and that works great, and also would always empty the bottom first. But also try to load anything that would collect water at an angle so it doesn't collect as much.

Actually it's not possible to "out clean" a dishwasher by hand. Everything that comes of of it has been sterilized. Gets quite hot.

Bleach! I don't always use it in my dishwater, but if I ever had "science experiments" in the fridge, those definitely got bleached. Bleach in the dishwater will cut your suds a bit, but you don't need much of it, and it bleaches your sponges or dish rags at the same time. If I'm not doing that, I'll just put a lil bleach water in the sink and soak the sponge/rag for a bit. Also.......if you have stainless sinks......fill to the top with hot water.....add some bleach, let it soak 30 mins or so........drain, rinse, dry, you'd be amazed how shiny they look. Plus it really cleans your sink and drain!

Oh, I bet that a spice cake would be really good!

Janet, I love cherries and pineapple together! Again I think a spice cake would be good with that.

I don't have a coloring book but I do have feathers and fur. So last night I was tying some flys before bedtime.

Well, lemmee say dis about dat. Mo money = mo features. Air dry, heat dry, pot scrubber, etc. $300 washer vs $3000 washer like nite n day. In fact the lower end washers don't even heat the water. They depend on your own waters heat.

And no, I ain't payin no 3k for a washer. But to get anything kinda decent yer in the 1k range. Which is why I sed I can't believe how pricey they got.

On da udder hand... bleach is poisin!!!

well so is detergent if ya drink it! I wouldn't soak my dishes in it and not rinse em, but bleach is an approved sanitizer in rinse water (meaning you don't rinse dishes afterwards) by the health dept for day cares and restaurants in a certain amt. Forget the exact percentage. I put it in my wash water, then rinse my dishes after.

as are you! lol As an aside.......I've even seen Alton Brown give herbs a swish in a very low % of bleach water......something like a tsp per gallon or few before drying them, to kill off any critters that might be lurking from the garden. We'd also use bleach water in a spray bottle to spray toys in the daycare each nite, cuz of all the germs that kids would get on them during the day.

Similar, maybe Janet, but with the 3 ingredient cake you mix it up before you bake it... left that part out.
