Now on the topic of strawberry shortcake, I was raised on the original version - a slightly sweet biscuit base, which may or may not include an egg.

Should....

Unfortunately, I am allergic to strawberries :-x and after first going to one big splurge per year, and then once a year of just the juice that naturally forms from lightly sugared berries (The only liquid I've ever used on my shortcake) I have finally had to give up completely.

Bummer!

No other fruit really works. Raspberry ought to be good, but the texture is all wrong. The only shortcake that I bother with now is made with good quality frozen peaches. Frozen, before you southerners get upset, works better than the hard sour "fresh" ones that we can get here. I used to kind of like those, but then I spent a summer in Texas and found out what fresh peaches ought to taste like.

Apparently ya didn't spend any peach time in Georgia or South 'Lina. Ya woulda have had to sit in a bath tub so ya could rinse off!

In the meantime I was promoted to a cam boot, which seems like torture to me. It's much heavier and more restrictive than the cast was. Not a happy camper.

Post my ankle rebuild surgery, I couldn't wait til I could wear a cam boot! Are ya fitted properly?
Regardless, hope ya bounce back quickly, get back to where ya wanna be and kick azz!

Well I have to say that all the versions of Strawberry Shortcake that have been discussed would be good - I am not picky and they sure have been making me hungry.

Since my favorite cake is Angle Food - I do have to admit that it is what I normally use when making Strawberry Shortcake. I then slice the strawberries , add sugar and let them sit until they make their own syrup then putting it all together and topping it all with Cool Whip.

I think I might have just found what desert will be on Sunday for Father's Day :)

ETA: oh and Matt you can get Cool Whip in a can to get that pssshhht
That's my method for the strawberries as well. Haven't had them on angelfood cake in years. Gonna have to try it that way again.

Nope ... don't think I've eaten more the 1/2 a Strawberry in my life ... it's a flavor/taste that doesn't appeal to me. Now turning to milk ....

A favorite lunch sandwich

  • Whole wheat bread - toasted preferred
  • Hebrew National Bologna
  • A few strips of green pepper
  • A handful of potato chips smashed and sprinkled on the meat and green peppers
  • A large glass of very cold milk (*)

An added bonus - desert a tastykake junior

I still have the sandwich frequently - but since I've been on a health kick :)rolleyes:) I rarely have the desert.

(*) I've always been big milk drinker - I still go through about 2 gallons a week even though Janet's been telling me for years - milk isn't really all that good for me anymore. Just can't break a lifetime's habit though.
Milk can contribute to UTIs as you get older. When you are in your seventies and eighties a UTI is awful. My MIL never came out of the nursing home after hers. She has been in Assisted Living Memory Care every since. That's the main reason we're moving. I know your not near that old but, just saying, it's something to keep in mind.

Sweet calm laid-back little Tukii has turned into the Tazmanian devil the last couple of days:D Earlier she was chasing a fly or some bug and she jumped 2/3 of the way up a wall to catch it.But she also acts like she's part doggie...always rubbing up against my feet and legs and when I talk to her she "talks" back to me...we have some very interesting convos!

Hope everyone has a great night....I'm off to the tub and a bubble bath as I was playing around in the dirt all afternoon and now I'm all stinky.

When I find I am facing a sugar jones of some sort, and have limited material on hand ..

I am fairly good at French Toast .. I almost always have bread on hand, eggs, no-fat milk and vanilla .. and I'll note that vanilla seems to last forever, since I have a large bottle that I bought in Mexico in the 1990's that I still use .. if the bread's too fresh, toast it lightly, dip in a mix of a couple eggs / milk and a splash of vanilla and fry it up in butter .. top with powdered sugar or clear Karo syrup, which is the only syrup I keep around ..

As a testament to my ability, it was one of the common requests of all my wives .. (I of course, only had one wife at a time, just to make sure any new folks don't get the wrong impression ;)) .. "Baby, I'd love it if you would make me some of that French Toast .. " .. .. "Certainement mon amour" (he spoke French) :)

I'll add that my Mother, may she rest in Peace please, would fry up some cheap canned refrigerator biscuits, roll them around in sugar and serve them warm .. to this day, I'll still sometimes get a can and fry some up myself .. cheap but very effective ..

We used to smear butter on a slice of bread and sprinkle sugar on it. Turns out Mike did that too and called it sugar bread. My brother and I were allowed 2 cookies and a glass of milk before bed, but sometimes we were out, so.... there was usually a little box of chocolate pudding mix in the pantry. You had to be careful eating that powdered stuff with a spoon. The powder would go up in our nose from the back of our throat! Weird how that happens.

Sorry for the news, Amoret. Have they said anything about osteoporosis?
They checked that out at the hospital, and my bones are very solid. Not surprising, since the only risk factor that I ever had was smoking.

This is the definition of short cake, same etymology as shortening. Oooh. Ever tried cutting them (peache or nectarine) in 1/2, sprinkle some brown sugar and a little butter where the stone used to be and put it under the broiler for a bit. Best to use the not quite ripe ones. I've seen this recipe a few times and keep meaning to try it.

Yes, and it's supposed to contribute to prostate cancer.
