Mine asks before updating & I select what I want to update. I never update the languages
I also have a free upgrade to Windows 10 on reserve. Not sure I want to go there. I like 7, hate 8 because I hate the desktoo display. Just give me Windows the way it's always looked & worked. Haven't heard anything about 10, so letting someone else guinea pig that first.

I beta tested WIN10 and I can tell you this .. it's great .. the Start Button is back, the access to Explore is back, it's almost a throwback to WIN 7 yet still very modern .. and very fast .. I think you'll like it ..

Akchooley there's 2 updates. One yesterday for a flash problem and one today for a font problem.

Now, FWIW, I NEVER have it set to auto update. Can be dangerous. MS has been known to destroy machines that way. I usually wait a few days after they're released to make sure no one has had a problem.
I set to auto download and then it tells you they're ready and you can let it/them install where you won't be interrupted by a sneaky lil "gotta ree booot".

that's one of the sites I saw when I googled it, but I feel like I can trust Cnet, which led me to a weirdo thing, didn't know who these folks were, and although I know I have lots and lots of bits, didn't know if the puter thinks it's 32 or 64 or how to fix it. and now not sure if it's the OS or the browser that's the problem

It's an "out of sequence" patch for win7. You don't get to those via a browser. Go to control panel, updates, or similar.
