I've been thinking about building some kind of jig to hold the coil in place and make the bends in the coil legs. I'm sure there must be a way. Has anyone ever done that?

I don't know if this will make sense with just a written description of what I do about that, but...here goes:

When I install a new coil in my little KFL+ shorty, I run a small Phillips head screwdriver through the coil, to help hold it over the air hole between the posts. With a very small pair of pointed, flat tip or chain nose pliers, I bend 1 leg of the coil so it's in a U shape around the screw. Then with a pair of Twizzers (tweezers with the tank gripper on the other end) or the same little pair of pliers...I pinch the 2 sides of the U together, on the air hole side of the screw head. Put the Twizzers or pliers down and use another screwdriver to tighten the post screw. The leg stays pinched around the screw and it doesn't squeeze/sneak out when tightening it. Snip off any excess leg wire when finished, and do the same to the other leg.

Pretty sure my computer and back have joined forces to drive me over the edge. :sneaky:
So good to see you! So sorry your having back troubles along with the puter troubles.

I know that one of the end loops is significantly wider spaced from the next loop than the spacing of the other loops
if you mean the loop on the ends of the coils, I get that all the time. Drives me bonkers, but can't seen to stop the ones on the ends from gettin loosy goosy on me.

Well, after only 15 minutes of vaping, the performance of the coil I made an hour ago was starting to suffer.
I assume this is a new problem........what have you done differently than with coils that lasted longer? Cuz yeah that would make me wanna toss the whole thing through a window! I would have zero patience with that.

Sometimes I read posts from people who can rewick in 27 seconds and make a new coil and install it in 93 seconds. It takes me longer than that just to get the wire and scissors laid out.
lmao......no kiddin!

Hi folks! Been a while since I've tormented y'all. Thought I'd come by and say HOWDY!
always nice to have ya stop by hun!

The first wrap is always wonky for me. I make an extra wrap, then pull the coil off of the tool, flip it around, & use a needle nose plier to pull on the leg, & pull that wonky wrap off. The rest are usally fine.

Pulling off the wonky leg makes the next leg wonky, in my experience, so I don't bother unless it's really terrible.

I made a new coil this morning, just 25 hours after the previous one. This time, the old one was still working very well, but it wasn't working GREAT.

I timed the process of making the new coil, from last toke on old coil to first toke on new coil. No snafus, and it still took 26 minutes. Plus, although the new coil is vaping GREAT, I know that one of the end loops is significantly wider spaced from the next loop than the spacing of the other loops, so I think it's possible that this coil may have to be replaced within hours. But dang, it tastes so good, it will be worthwhile. I do hope I can find a way to either speed up the coil-making process or make coils that stay in top shape for a longer period of time.

I don't pulse, dry-burn or check the function and resistance prior to installing them and using them. That may not fit the conventional wisdom, I know. All I do is build 'em, install 'em, put the tank on my mod, have the mod measure and set the resistance, and use 'em.
I can't imagine having to change coils on daily basis. I would be looking into using another type of wire.

How's 'bout winding a bunch of coils ahead of time. Then when it comes time to recoil/rewick, you'll save on the coil winding time.
I second making coils ahead of time. With all of the meds I take each day, I have plenty of empty bottles that I could use to store DIY coils. There is plenty of room to write the coil size, resistance, and which tank they are for use in.
I'm like @englishmick, I am still getting used to the Kayfun and figuring out the different coils to really make a bunch of coils.

I'm stocked up on PT coils. I did 20 at a sitting 2 or 3 times a week. It took months but now I've got around 500 in an old tobacco tin. Since I rewick them several times I reckon I'll never have to make another one.

I would like to do the same for Kayfun and Lemo coils. But I'm still experimenting with wire and resistance and so forth. It would be really cool to have a big box full. All separated by resistance and so forth. With the bends for the screws already in place.

I've been thinking about building some kind of jig to hold the coil in place and make the bends in the coil legs. I'm sure there must be a way. Has anyone ever done that?
I use a Coil Master jig and use it to hold the coil in place while I wrap the ends around the screws. This works really well on my Kayfun V-5 and V-3.1. Here is a pic of a knockoff set of the Coil Master jig.

I have a pair of
pr500.jpg
that I use to bend the wire around the screw. They lock, so you don't need a third hand.
I have a few of these around the house. They come in handy for that 3rd hand while soldering wire.

I leave it on the coiler & pull straight down & it just unwraps. Leaves the others in place perfectly.

Perhaps drop them a note that's there's a glitch on their site if it's still listed that way? (I tried to look it up but their site is not responding or my computer is having a fit.)
I tried to go there today also and I had to re register. Their site has changed a lot. Haven't tried to place an order again but will. It was really screwin up earlier.

Tonight I felt like a real rookie! I was re-coiling my Kayfun V3.1s. I turned the tank upside down and unscrewed the lower part of the tank to get to the coil. When I got to the coil the chimney was still in the tank. I needed the chimney to set the Wick so I grabbed the chimney and pulled it out. When I did that I dumped an almost full tank of juice down the front of my shirt. Thank goodness for Tide. I actually re-coiled both tanks with 6 wraps of SS316L for .49 ohm coils. I got both tanks ready to go and put them on my Coil Master Tab 521 to verify ohms and no shorts. Both were good to go. I was very proud of myself. I got the first one on my eVic-VT and went into the menu to change it over to TC from power mode. I could not find SS in the menu. I knew I had used TC before so what's up? Then it finally dawned on me, this model does not allow updates to SS and I had used Ni200 coils for TC in the past. I put everything away and it is time for bed! Oh, vaping the Fayfun V3.1 with a SS316L coils at 25 watts on my eVic-VT is very satisfying.

I forget to close the juice flow on my K5 when refilling & get the same result. Sheesh!

If one end of my coil has the infamous, bigger loop, then I feed my wick in from that end. Seems the wick is always fluffier/thicker on the end the cotton/rayon 'enters' and it fills up that wider initial loop.

I do the same, actually do two extra wraps, pull off the last and the first. Legs are nice and straight, coil look fabulous! I'm just not good at mounting the coils. By the time I get them attached, I always have at least one wild loop, sometimes two. But, no hot legs, and they work, so what the heck. lol

Hadn't though about it til now, but don't seem to have that issue as much doing the z coil on the O16 atty though. Will have to pay more attn next time I recoil.

You've now been baptized into vaping! Bout time! hehehe I did that many years ago with some bottom fill tank. Unscrewed the tank instead of just unscrewing it from the mod. Smelled like strawberry pie even after changing my shirt til I showered the next day. :)

Jup, the worst one always ends up being where I would normally thread the wick into anyhow.

Had a problem with vaping at work. New vaper started there. She has some kind of large box mod with the tank inside, don't know what because she isn't very chatty. It doesn't have a drip tip because she lost it. Got a new one and lost that too so she vapes without it. It must be low ohm since she takes really short hits and blasts out huge clouds. Very strong blueberry flavor as well.

She got in the habit of taking a quick hit as she walked through a corridor between working areas, and eventually got caught by a manager. It's always been against the rules to do it inside but after that they issued a hardass memo about vaping in the building, talking about immediate termination and so forth. I used to do fine in the back of the engineering workshop but the memo made me nervous.

So I made up some high nic unflavored all PG juice. I can take a quick hit behind the machines with no lingering aroma and no visible vapor. Plus being high nic I don't have to do it very often. Not the most fun vape but it does the job. And when I get back to the car at the end of the shift my regular juice tastes extra good.

We are our own worst enemy sometimes.
