I'm sitting on my porch/patio missing my cat. She probably had GI lymphoma, and I was looking into treatments that might have kept her around for a while, but she took a sudden turn for the worse on Wednesday night, and when I took her to the vet the next day I knew it was probably her last ride. She'd been OK until Wednesday morning, but suddenly something had gone very wrong.

I would have done just about anything to keep her around a bit longer, and I had an appointment with a feline oncologist for Monday morning, but after a last ultrasound and an examination of the fluid in her abdomen it became clear that she had reached the end of what one small cat could be asked to put up with. I spent twenty minutes saying goodbye to her, and then we proceeded. Wow, it was fast.

Orange Person was the sweetest cat I've ever known, and I've known a few. Everyone who met her wanted her (it's generally difficult to find a home for an adult cat, but I had to tell people that they couldn't take her. She'd meet someone new and jump into their arms, put her paws around their neck, and they would want to take her home.) For nine years, no matter how I slept or who I slept with, she slept on top of me. She was like a lumberjack in a log-rolling contest- I'd roll in my sleep and she'd adjust so she stayed sitting on me, all night, every night. I'm going to miss her.

So very sorry for your loss. Some animals, we have a better relationship than with people. It can be very hard. Remember all the fun times, and time will soften the painful loss.

I get it, I get it completely, unfortunately. Been there and done that, yet never fully got over it. When you are ready, probably a little before that, give another animal a chance to experience your love and devotion. You may be their only hope.

Our last dog was a saint, the love of my life. Our current one is a complete, constant, PITA. Doesn't matter, when he goes, and we will throw everything and more at his end-of-days care, we will eventually adopt another to fill his void and offer all we can to the enrichment of yet another precious life, even if it turns out to be another PITA.

I'm anguished by your loss of Orange Person, the loss of our pets have left deep scars, but please, in months down the road, give another animal a good life for a good life in a loving home.

Am I just weird or does it seem odd that a cat is named "Orange person" at this point in history? If I'm being taken in @go_player, I'm not happy.

I can assure you that my cat was named Orange Person as far back as Spring of 2008, when I first met her, long before current events gave extra weight to that name. I was trying very hard to avoid having cats (I have three left now that Orange Person is gone, but I wanted to have none,) and didn't want to give her a name, because naming her would mean I had to keep her. My other cats are named, incidentally, little boy, little girl, and mackerel, for similar reasons (mackerel because he is a mackerel tabby.)

A Chinese woman I knew at the time first called her Orange Person, due to her interesting and endlessly entertaining interpretation of the English language. The name stuck, the cat stuck, and while the Chinese woman is long gone I still have three cats.

Sorry to read about this. So sad when we lose one of our cherished furry friends.

Welcome to the porch, @listopencil !

I live in CA too near Yosemite. Bloody hot. Yesterday was the worst until all the smoke from the Santa Barbara area blew in in the late afternoon. Welcome relief here but I'm devastated for the people and animals (domestic/wild) down there. Been there before, terrified this will be our year again. Hope you live in a safer area.

We didn't have an option for a mailbox when we moved here, had to have a PO Box. When they eventually did do mail delivery in our area, mail started disappearing. We've just kept the PO Box, as many here have, and I'm glad we did. It's not that expensive. Perhaps just get one for important/sensitive stuff and packages? IMHO, it's worth it, though I'd love to be able to walk out and pick up my own vape mail instead of waiting days until it can be fetched from the PO.

One other piece of unsolicited advice, it's mandatory that you check in here at least every couple of days. Otherwise we sic Iffy and Deb (with her lethal fryingpan) on you. :sneaky:

Holy cow! And twin calves. Got the order from Alice in Vapeland with the three tanklets. The ziplocks, no joke, where just big enough to hold one aspirin. They came in a box with a rabbit (Mad Hatter?) on it, filled with Confetti, personalized message, cool playing card. Hopefully this gives you an idea.

Seriously the best $3 in shipping I've ever paid. Bought them for a "lift" after the bad news, it worked. :)

Edit: After you open the box, you have to take some of the "confetti" out to get it closed again.
Very cool! Where is your Angry Bird & flamingo?

Now pull up a rockin' chair and swap lies and swat flies with us...

She'd meet someone new and jump into their arms, put her paws around their neck, and they would want to take her home.

So would I!

And yes, our furry friends do become an integral and intimate part of our lives/memories. Still miss mine...

Yes, that is very true. A friend of mine was down from Vermont last weekend, and we sat on the patio and talked for a long time. Orange Person jumped in his lap and curled up there for hours.

My friend lost his mother when he was very young, and his father when he was about 20, a long time ago now, so he is no stranger to loss. My mother, who was my only real parent, died a few years ago.

I'm surprised at how sharp the pain of losing a cat can be, but, and this is part of what we talked about, the difference between losing cats and losing people is that time does heal the wounds of the former. I had a cat as a child that I loved fiercely (technically, another female orange tabby, surprisingly enough- that's not _that_ rare, but orange cats are generally male.) She died a long time ago, and when I think back to her there is no remaining sense of loss. I just have good memories of her.

People, if you are really close to them, leave a hole that, at least in my experience, you can never quite fill. You get over the immediate grief, but you never stop missing them. I loved this cat, and I think I will miss her for a long time, but there will come a time when I look back and just remember what a good cat she was. She really was a great cat.

So sorry for your loss. Loosing a pet is so hard. Cherish the memories - gone from your life but never from your heart.

I once worked with a woman who, every year, celebrated her 29th birthday. At one point her daughter got a job with the same company. Her daughter turned 30 shortly after starting there.
